Maybe that won't even play against her? She is obviously loved among the community and if her performance is that great, maybe they will want to make history for her?

So excited for American Hustle! It's my most anticipated movie of the rest of the year, it seems fantastic and these reviews are making me even more excited. Hopefully it is able to take the price from the overrated Slave. :P

Bradley Cooper is definitely a contender for the Supporting Actor win too, I think.

Quote:
Let me start with the two actors who I think have the best odds of being nominated: Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Cooper is absolutely terrific in the movie, and at times he's the only truly sympathetic character (perhaps even more so than Russell intended, given the way events in the movie shake out). It's an incredibly amped performance that feels distinct from Cooper's Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook role; expect him to squeeze into the race for Best Supporting Actor. And then there's J. Law: After the film ended, the blogger in front of me mused out loud, "Is Jennifer Lawrence gonna get another Oscar?" I wouldn't go that far, but she's likely to score a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the very least, since her muckraking character provides some of the movie's best moments (even if her accent sometimes feels a little shaky).

I don't buy into the whole "But she won last year!!" reasoning. If she gives the best performance of those nominated, should she be nominated, then why say "Oh but we can't, she just won last year"?

I'm just putting myself into the mind of an Oscar voter. Many of them are not rational.

I am pretty sure some are thinking just the same thing.

It's like...Russell Crowe almost certaionly would have won for A Beautiful Mind (and I mean like 99% probability) had he not won for Gladiator the year before.

No no, I totally get that we're talking about Oscar voters here. I don't get why THEY think like that. This whole "spread the wealth" thing, I don't get it.

I know for sure that will be the reason she won't win, even if she is the best of those nominated.

The Wolf of Wall Street just screened, and the twitter reactions are excellent, with some calling it the best film of the year. Not necessarily trusting all the reactions from first screening (e.g. Les Misérables), but it's looking good. People are saying Leo may not only get a nomination for Best Actor, but contending for the win.

Fruitvale Station currently isn't really appearing in the Top 5 for any category here it seems. However, I am starting to think that it will definitely no end up with zero noms. Jordan, Coogler, Spencer or the screenplay will get in.

American Hustle embargo has been lifted. Reviews from both Hollywood Reporter and Variety are sensational.

It's getting raves all over the place, and every single review has mentioned that while the entire cast is great Lawrence is the best in show.

I hope Stories We Tell just steamrolls the Best Documentary categories this year. Such a great film: fascinating, moving, personal, sad.

I feel like Fruitvale Station will keep gaining strength and get back into the race (for major noms, not wins).

My current predicted BP line-up:

Her
Captain Phillips
The Wolf of Wall Street
Gravity
12 Years a Slave
American Hustle
Inside Llewyn Davis
Blue Jasmine
Fruitvale Station
Nebraska

Alt: The Butler

Yeah, I think they'll go for ten this year.

I have Saving Mr. Banks over Blue Jasmine, but only barely. Pundits keep saying that industry people love it, and AMPAS has come to love their movies about movies lately (The Artist, Argo). But the reviews are so aggressively "good not great" that it could still miss to the films with more passion.

And I currently have Fruitvale down for Picture, S. Actress and Screenplay. Jordan is a potential Actor spoiler if one of the Top 5 falters and Leo doesn't become a thing.

Her could pull A Serious Man and end up with two noms - Picture and Original Screenplay.

I wonder what "shocking" misses could happen, such as Bigelow and Affleck not getting in last year.... I think Captain Phillips and/or American Hustle might miss Director. Dallas Buyers Club could miss Best Actor. Blur Jasmine could miss Original Screenplay. Those would be shockers, but I could also see them happening. If it weren#t for Oprah, I think The Butler could have been shut out completely.

12 Years A Slave
Gravity
The Wolf of Wall Street
American Hustle
Captain Phillips

Inside Llewyn Davis
Fruitvale Station
Nebraska
Before Midnight

BM is going out on a limb, but I think the #1 votes and how insanely well reviewed it is (right behind 12 YAS/Gravity) gives it a shot

If the insanely good reviews have such an influence, why did it not even make the Top 10 of Best Independent Films by NBR?

Your Top 5 looks surprisingly reasonable, though :P No Take Shelter-like poick this year? :-D I think that Top 5 will get its directors nominated too.

Before Midnight is likely to be reduced to a screenplay nom again. It needs critics help, and so far it hasn't gotten much. Thinking both Her and Blue is the Warmest Color are stronger contenders.

Just saw Wolf. It is assured a Best Actor/Best Supporting Actor/Best Adapted Screenplay nom. Probably a Best Picture/Best Director nom too.

Gravity will win by a landslide, followed by 12 Years a Slave and probably Before Midnight.

Interesting to see Spring Breakers > 12 Years on that list so far. Still need to catch that film.
