100. Dirty Dancing (1987, Emile Ardolino)
Image

I've had the time of my life and I owe it all to you.

99. The Tree of Life (2011, Terrence Malick)
Image

Practically ethereal. I'm normally not a huge Malick fan but he got me here.

98. Sideways (2004, Alexander Payne)
Image

"I'M NOT DRINKING ANY FUCKING MERLOT!" A brilliant and insightful look at wine both as a metaphor for life and not. Virginia Madsen's monologue about how she got into wine is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

97. The Sixth Sense (1999, M. Night Shyamalan)
Image

Aside from its famous and undeniably clever ending, the film works because of its humanity. I cry every time at the scene near the end where Haley Joel Osment tells Toni Collette about talking to her deceased mother.

96. The Manchurian Candidate (1962, John Frankenheimer)
Image

Chilling and inventive even today, the film stands tall above Jonathan Demme's 2004 remake (solid but nowhere near this). Angela Lansbury, man.

95. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997, P.J. Hogan)
Image

One of the only romantic comedies where the heroine manages to be completely unlikable and completely sympathetic at the same time, this film launched Julia Roberts back into the big time after her career started sagging in the mid 90s. Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett are completely perfect in their roles. The "Say a Little Prayer" singalong is hilarious and jubilant.

The Manchurian Candidate, The Sixth Sense, and Sideways are very fine choices.

94. Legally Blonde (2001, Robert Luketic)
Image

Frivolous and silly? Sure. But Legally Blonde is one of those movies that instantly cheers me up, thanks to a sharp script and Reese Witherspoon's perfect comic performance. Adore it.

93. United 93 (2006, Paul Greengrass)
Image

One of the most devastating cinematic experiences I've had. Greengrass expertly builds tension and suspense despite everyone on earth knowing the oucome. The ending is enough to leave stunned silence.

92. Little Miss Sunshine (2006, Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris)
Image

Released in the same year as the previous film on the list, Little Miss Sunshine could not be more different. It's unbelievably heartwarming and funny with pitch perfect performances from a great ensemble. I remember reviewing the film here on KJ when it came out and saying it made me want to hug myself. It's still true.

91. Broadcast News (1987, James L. Brooks)
Image

One of three James L. Brooks films that will be on this list. Three actors at the top of their games (William Hurt, Albert Brooks, Holly Hunter) in a film that is strikingly funny and delves into the whirlwind world of television news.

90. Double Indemnity (1944, Billy Wilder)
Image

The ultimate film noir, spawning legions of imitators. It's still arguably the most effective, though. Barbara Stanwyck makes for an incredible femme fatale.

89. A Few Good Men (1992, Rob Reiner)
Image

It's a lot more than "you can't handle the truth!" With a brilliant screenplay by Aaron Sorkin from his own play, A Few Good Men pulses with electricity. It's a highly efficient, crisp courtroom drama that utilizes Tom Cruise and Demi Moore to some of their best performances, with a commanding Jack Nicholson taking control.

A Few Good Men is a bit mediocre outside of Nicholson's performance, in my opinion. Not an above average courtroom drama.

United 93 is a strong inclusion.

I love Broadcast News. I hate Little Miss Sunshine.

Shit list so far.
A Few Good Man is good, though.

Legally Blonde is the only one so far that would have a shot at my top 100. It's a guilty pleasure of mine. Probably watch it once every year or two.

88. Million Dollar Baby (2004, Clint Eastwood)
Image

What at first seems to be an inspirational sports movie of sorts (albeit a very well made one) takes a dramatic turn in its third act and becomes something else. A highly powerful and haunting film, the film boasts powerhouse acting by its lead trio.

87. The Help (2011, Tate Taylor)
Image

Great roles for women in Hollywood are nowhere near as available as they should be. And African-American actresses? Forget it. The Help gives incredibly rich, meaty roles to Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, with delightful performances from the entire rest of the cast, particularly Jessica Chastain. It's emotionally true and highly moving.

86. Up (2009, Pete Docter)
Image

Up isn't just beautifully animated. It's incredibly beautiful on an emotional level too. The film's prologue is extremely poignant, perhaps moreso than any other scene in any animated film I've watched. The rest of the film has heart and laughs in equal measures. A complete delight.

85. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981, Steven Spielberg)
Image

Let's be real. Movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark are why we go to the movies. Ingenious, stylish, thrilling, heart-stopping and full of wonder. This movie can make anyone feel like a little kid again. Indiana Jones is an iconic character that will never be topped.

84. Chasing Amy (1997, Kevin Smith)
Image

Chasing Amy is all about chasing the unattainable, something we can all relate to. It also explores the often blurred lines between friendship and sex in an emotionally honest way that most romantic comedies don't. Jay and Silent Bob are present, of course, but this is by far Kevin Smith's most mature and rounded film.

83. A League of Their Own (1992, Penny Marshall)
Image

"There's no crying in baseball!" I absolutely love this movie. It's funny and warm, and as a girl who played a lot of sports growing up, I totally related to it.

82. Rosemary's Baby (1968, Roman Polanski)
Image

This movie gives me the heebie jeebies every time. Fantastic performances by Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon. My favorite Polanski film, and psychological horror at its very best.

Big fan of Chasing Amy and Rosemary's Baby.

I don't think that sentence was ever written before.

I'm sure you'll catch shit for The Help, but it's a great movie.

The Help and Million Dollar Baby are just godawful choices. ;)

Rosemary's Baby is always the default favorite over Repulsion, but it should not be.

Chasing Amy is a very touching movie. Easy to watch and sympathize with.

LMS and Chasing Amy probably would've made my top 125-150 (and Sideways/Up! are matches)

If I attempted another Top 100, there are likely three matches in Rosemary's Baby, Chasing Amy and Little Miss Sunshine.

81. Lincoln (2012, Steven Spielberg)
Image

Daniel Day-Lewis inhibits Abraham Lincoln. Spielberg and Tony Kushner make the excellent choice to avoid framing this as a typical biopic. The film is all the better for it. Incredibly entertaining and informative.

80. The Notebook (2004, Nick Cassavetes)
Image

Oh, come on. Like you didn't expect this to be on here. The ultimate sappy and sentimental romance that lives up to its reputation. White hot chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.

79. The Breakfast Club (1985, John Hughes)
Image

No chance of forgetting about this one. It is the quintessential 80s teen film. You are much more than whatever stereotype you're boxed into. Truly awesome.

78. It's a Wonderful Life (1946, Frank Capra)
Image

I think of Christmas and I think of It's a Wonderful Life. A cinematic staple and the ultimate heartwarmer.

77. Babe (1995, Chris Noonan)
Image

Basically cinematic magic. The most unexpectedly great film you'll ever see if you judge based entirely on plot description.

76. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969, George Roy Hill)
Image

My favorite western. The iconic pairing of Robert Redford and Paul Newman in a witty, jaunty escapist adventure.

75. Moulin Rouge (2001, Baz Luhrmann)
Image

Dizzyingly romantic and daring. Hyperkinetic and beautiful.
