was Tron Legacy a flop at the box office?
I was talking to someone about whether Tron Legacy was a flop at the box office. I think it kind of was because no sequel was made. I personally would have liked a sequel so it is too bad IMO

I wouldn't say flop, more disappointment. That a sequel still hasn't been made is very telling about what Disney thought of its performance. $170M is still pretty good.

It made a good profit, just not as much as they expected. But definitely not a flop. It made 400 on a 170 budget, another 100+ in WW DVD, On Demand, TV Rights, and a shit load of revenue from rides and merchandise from Disney.

Here's a bit of KJ analysis from way back in 2011.

looking at TL box office weekends it looked like it had some solid holds even after it lost IMAX. It is a shame it just didn't have a higher opening http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=w ... =tron2.htm

What everyone said. I didn't like the movie so I'm fine if they are not making a sequel.

I'm still surprised it grossed that much.

Re: was Tron Legacy a flop at the box office?
No, but it wasn't quite the hit Disney wanted it to be, either. With that release date and marketing push, I always thought they were gunning for at least $200 million domestic.
That said, if anything, its gross just looks more impressive after the failures of other action movies that the mouse house has tried to sell to an audience slightly older than their typical target demo. It made more on its own than the mega-flops John Carter and The Lone Ranger did combined. It's not quite a straight comparison because Tron was PG (albeit probably one of the harder PGs they've released) and some of the marketing was aimed at preteens, but they still did a much, much better job of getting teens and adults into theatres than they did with their even more massively-budgeted PG-13 fare.

Re: was Tron Legacy a flop at the box office?
I actually think it was a bit of a hit.
For some reason I thought it only made about $90m or so.
