What about The Conjuring? It was supposed to be released on October, 11. But I can't find any numbers.

It only opened on 21 screens, but even then most limited releases typically have their opening weekend numbers reported. Horror films perform very poorly in Japan, so it must have done truly terrible numbers. I've never seen any opening below ¥5 million (sub-$50,000) reported before, so it more than likely opened below that figure.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Trailer)

Opening November 23rd (only the third film from Studio Ghibli to open outside of July), the film is based on 'The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter', a 10th-century Japanese folktale considered to be the oldest Japanese narrative.

Directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder, Isao Takahata ('Grave of the Fireflies', 'Pom Poko'), his first film in 14-years. It is rumored to be his final film as well, making 2013 known as the year both studio co-founders retired (Hayao Miyazaki having announced his retirement in early September with 'The Wind Rises'), and marking a major transitional time for the studio.

Weekend Forecast [10/26-27]

ImageImageImageImage

1 (-) Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) ¥400 million ($4.1 million) DEBUT [129 theaters]
2 (-) Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future! (Toei) ¥185 million ($1.9 million) DEBUT [199 theaters]

3 (1) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Toho) ¥131 million ($1.4 million) Week 3
4 (-) Beyond the Memories (Toho) ¥125 million ($1.3 million) DEBUT [266 theaters]
5 (2) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) ¥103 million ($1.1 million) Week 5
6 (3) The King of Apology (Toho) ¥98 million ($1.0 million) Week 5
7 (-) Now You See Me (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥90 million ($925,000) DEBUT [182 theaters]
8 (4) Human Trust (Shochiku) ¥68 million ($700,000) Week 2
9 (5) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) ¥67 million ($680,000) Week 6
10 (6) Diana (Gaga) ¥31 million ($320,000) Week 2

The climax in the 'Magi Madoka Magica' trilogy has reached half-capacity or sold out status for most of its showings for Saturday hours in advance and looks poised to deliver one of the most impressive openings this year despite barely being a wide-release. It'll also be Warner Bros. biggest opener of the year, by far. The last film opened to ¥172 million on just 43 screens last October, so at least double that and a 2-day psa over $30,000 is more than doable.

When is Escape Plan coming out? I have a release date for it as Oct 17th, which ibviously isn't true, which had me wondering if you knew..

I think it will do greatly in Japan. The coming together of Arn and Sly will undoubtedly get the old faithful fans our of their houses and into the cinemas.

'Escape Plan' is being released January 10, 2014 via Gaga.

Gaga is an independent distributor, but they handle their releases really well. I'm actually surprised Gaga picked it up. As far as imported-releases, go, they tend to stay consistent with critically-acclaimed films, or those with the potential, that aren't released by the major studios. It's probably the most interesting film they've picked up since 'The Three Musketeers' a couple years ago, which did very, very well in the market.

Japan was actually its best market outgrossing it's take from North America, largely due to the popularity of both Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) and Orlando Bloom (Pirates, LOTR) on board I think.

Really good news. I cannot wait. I hope it can outgross the US gross. Maybe wishful thinking?

I personally don't see a reason why it'd gross much more than 'The Expendables' films, but a surprise performance would be welcomed.

Weekend Estimates [10/26-27]

1 (-) Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) ¥310 million ($3.20 million), 0, DEBUT [129 theaters]
2 (1) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Toho) ¥169 million ($1.74 million), -09%, Week 3
3 (-) Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future! (Toei) ¥163 million ($1.67 million), 0, DEBUT [199 theaters]
4 (3) The King of Apology (Toho) ¥97 million ($997,000), -32%, Week 5
5 (-) Now You See Me (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥93 million ($955,000), 0, DEBUT [182 theaters]
6 (-) Beyond the Memories (Toho) ¥89 million ($914,000), 0, DEBUT [266 theaters]

7 (2) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) ¥85 million ($873,000), -42%, Week 5
8 (5) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) ¥55 million ($565,000), -44%, Week 6
9 (4) Human Trust (Shochiku) ¥46 million ($473,000), -57%, Week 2
10 (6) Diana (Gaga) ¥25 million ($257,000), -48%, Week 2
11 (9) The Wind Rises (Toho) ¥21 million ($216,000), -37%, Week 15
12 (7) R.I.P.D (Toho-Towa) ¥19 million ($195,000), -60%, Week 2
13 (10) Ataru: The First Love & The Last Kill (Toho) ¥17 million ($174,000), -49%, Week 7
14 (8) Oshin (Toei) ¥16 million ($163,000), -57%, Week 3
15 (11) Elysium (Sony) ¥6 million ($61,000), -56%, Week 6

Strong opening for 'Magi Madoka Magica', about 80% better than it's predecessor. I was expecting it to double up on the last film, but the number is still impressive regardless. One variable, however, may be the midnights it had. So few films ever get midnights (the last being 'Eva 3.0' last November), I'm not sure if the estimate take those into account or not.

Spectacular hold for 'The Girl in the Sunny Place'.

So-so for 'Pretty Cure'. That's less than the last film released in March, but still within the opening range of all the other films in the series. The last couple films managed to crawl to ¥1 billion ($10/11 million), but I think this one will stall out around ¥900 million ($9.5 million) if estimates hold.

Not bad for 'Now You See Me'. It was a Friday opener, so it's 3-day total should be around ¥120/125 million ($1.3 million). The film should be on target for ¥550-600 million ($6-6.5 million).

'Beyond the Memories' wasn't expected to do much being a smaller-tier film from Toho, but a sub-¥100 million opening is very poor.

Weekend Ranking [10/26-27]

Image

1 (-) Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
2 (-) Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future! (Toei) DEBUT

3 (1) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Toho) Week 3
4 (3) The King of Apology (Toho) Week 5
5 (-) Now You See Me (Kadokawa Pictures) DEBUT
6 (2) Like Father, Like Son (Toho) Week 5
7 (-) Beyond the Memories (Toho) DEBUT
8 (5) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 6
9 (4) Human Trust (Shochiku) Week 2
10 (6) Diana (Gaga) Week 2

Estimates were once again fairly unreliable again this weekend, but since they've been underestimating most films, that's okay!

'Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story' saw a huge opening of ¥400,003,600 ($4.2 million) and 271,279 admissions on only 129 screens. That's a very high avg. ticket price of ¥1,474 ($15.20) (helps explain why estimates were so low), showing that many otaku are willing to pay any price. The opening number may be slightly fudged, too, given how close it is to ¥400 million (literally only 2 or 3 people made the difference!), but it's a huge achievement earning a 2-day psa of ¥3.10 million ($32,000) and delivering the best opening since July, and the best since 'Dark Shadows' in May 2012 for Warner Bros!

I'm sure it'll be pretty frontloaded, but it should still manage ¥1.5 billion ($16 million) or slightly more.

'Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future' performed way better than estimates and beat the last film by a solid 9%. The film opened on 199 screens and earned ¥213,410,200 ($2.2 million) and 191,918 admissions. It's definitely going to reach ¥1 billion ($10/11) now.

'Now You See Me' debuted with ¥100,032,400 ($1.1 million) and 76,725 admissions on 182 screens. Given the low screen count, this is a fairly impressive opening that should yield no less than ¥600 million ($6/7 million) for the film in the market.

And finally, debut in a disappointing 7th place, 'Beyond the Memories' grossed just ¥86,713,300 ($890,000) and 65,282 admissions on 266 screens.

'The Wind Rises' has slowed down a lot since mid-October, however, it still hasn't lost a single screen (it's actually playing on 3 more than when it opened back in July) since opening. And I doubt it will lose any until December, so when it begins to bring in very small numbers in a couple weeks, it will still be playing for awhile.

It might also receive a small boost when 'The Princess Kaguya Story' opens November 23rd. I can imagine some Ghibli fans treating themselves to a double-feature featuring the final films from the co-founders next month or during New Year perhaps.

Also, excellent performance by 'Like Father, Like Son'. It will definitely reach the ¥3 billion milestone, making it one of Gaga's biggest releases. And 'The King of Apology' is nearly as impressive in locking itself up for ¥2 billion. Both films are looking at multipliers over 8 or 9 ('Like Father, Like Son' may even hit 10), which is very, very strong for early Fall releases and resemble the legs for a release in July or December during the Holidays.

1,310 [44] - 42 (NEW)
1,012 [92] - Human Trust (Week 3)

314 [29] - Despicable Me 2 (Week 7)
295 [47] - Oshin (Week 4)

Very, very strong for SPEC: Close. Even with it being the 1st (discount day), I haven't seen a Friday stronger than a Saturday unless it lands on an actual Holiday. So this is great news for Part I of the film heading into the weekend. I highly doubt it has any trouble exceeding ¥500 million ($5.1 million) for the 3-day weekend, and it'll probably go higher reaching ¥600 million or better ($6.5 million+).

Meh for Percy Jackson. It will need much stronger results from the other chains to post a good debut.

It looks like I may have really overestimated the potential of 42 (it's baseball!), or it's simply not playing as wide as it's theater count indicates. 44 showings for an opener the first day is very low, limited release low (which it's not), so I'm guessing it just didn't get many screens at Toho locations and its ranking here is misleading.

Similar case with Jobs, but the opposite. The ranking is rather high, especially the number of showings for the day, but it appears to be playing primarily at Toho locations explaining it's ranking here. I don't expect it'll make the Top 5, and think it and 42 will more or less swap positions on the national rankings.

It was about time I started keeping track of this. I don't have data for every film that opens, but I'll update with any film that does more than 15,000 admissions first day at Toho Cinemas that's reported.

SPEC: Close Part I looks set to break 100,000 admissions over the 3-day weekend at Toho locations, potentially putting a 500,000 admissions debut in play. Even with Friday being a discount day, that should be enough for a ¥600 million ($6 million) weekend, at least.

I also just realized that with Sunday being Culture Day, that Monday is essentially apart of the weekend frame too with school being out of session, as well as a few workplaces. So we kinda have a rare 4-day weekend this week.

Huge Sunday (Culture Day) all-around. Only two films saw a decrease for the day, while most of the other films saw big increases.

>114,023 admissions at only Toho locations (~20% of the nation's theaters) over the 3-day for SPEC: Close Part I is big, the best for a live-action film this year I believe since it's Saturday and Sunday admissions are higher than both Skyfall and Midsummer Formula.

I'm going to predict about 525-550,000 admissions for ¥650 million ($6.6/6.7 million) for the 3-day Holiday weekend frame. And Monday is looking very good, too, so we may see a 4-day total exceed ¥800 million ($8-9 million).

>Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters recovered over the weekend, but 24,000 admissions over the 3-day is still mediocre. I'll go with a 3-day Holiday weekend debut of about 120,000 admissions and ¥150 million ($1.6 million).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates [Culture Day Weekend
4-Day Weekend Estimates (11/01-04)[Culture Day Weekend]

5 (3) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Toho) ¥180 million ($1.9 million) [303 theaters] Week 4
6 (-) Jobs (Gaga) ¥130 million ($1.4 million) [99 theaters] DEBUT
7 (-) 42 (Warner Bros.) ¥125 million ($1.3 million) [159 theaters] DEBUT

8 (4) The King of Apology (Toho) ¥110 million ($1.2 million) [324 theaters] Week 6
9 (5) Now You See Me (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥90 million ($910,000) [182 theaters] Week 2

12 (7) Beyond the Memories (Toho) ¥80 million ($860,000) [266 theaters] Week 2
12 (-) 2 Guns (Sony) ¥80 million ($810,000) [199 theaters] DEBUT

I caution these estimates since they're 4-day estimates, and these weekends are really rare. They can only happen when a discount day (the 1st/14th of every month) or Holiday lands on a Friday, and that following Monday also happens to be a discount day or Holiday. So with all these factors at play this weekend, not accounting for theaters changing screens and showtimes from Friday-to-Saturday, some of them could very inaccurate. Actual numbers will be released tomorrow.

Anyway,

>SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part I exceeded expectations, debuting on par or maybe slightly ahead of the first film (Sat/Sun) despite this being only the first half of the sequel. Splitting the sequel looks to have payed off big time for Toho. They could be looking at a combined gross up to ¥5 billion ($50 million), when a single film would have likely earned ¥3 billion (low $30s) tops.

The second half opens in only 4 weeks (Nov. 29th). And since the second half does open soon, and having opened over a 4-day weekend (which includes the discount day), this part of the film will surely be frontloaded but should still reach ¥2 billion ($20 million) ahead of the opening of the next film.

>Magi Madako Magica and Pretty Cure are close in the estimates and I think it's highly likely the former wins in gross, while the latter wins in admissions with them having a drastic avg. ticket price difference of nearly 25% based on opening weekend admissions. Somehow, this 'Pretty Cure' film held extremely well in its second weekend (sub-20% over Sat/Sun at Toho locations) when most of the past films dropped at least 35/40%.

>Percy Jackson mostly disappoints, making only 55/60% over the 4-day versus what the first film opened to in 2-days. If estimates hold, it'll only make like ¥700 million ($7-7.5 million) at best. This isn't too unexpected since it took awhile for the sequel to be released, but the first film, while it opened well, had mediocre legs suggesting it wasn't too well-liked.

>2 Guns put up pathetic numbers.
