I heard it wasn't very political. At least I read it wasn't in this Rotten Tomatoes quote :P.

While the director takes care to show how Adèle struggles with social pressure, hiding her sexuality from her friends and parents, that aspect never hijacks the narrative. This is a drama of self-discovery, not a social-issues film.

- A.A. Dowd, AV Club

Where did you see it? Was there a good turnout?

Someone on the IMDB board posted this:

Quote:
I saw this yesterday at the Lincoln Plaza Cinemas in New York City. During the course of the movie's sex scenes between Adèle and Emma, three or four times, both individuals and groups of two actually got up and walked out. The final person to walk out muttered "Disgusting!" as they left.

I can understand why they left, but I'm still a bit surprised. The movie is advertised as NC-17 for explicit sexual content. However, it does push the NC-17 envelope more than other movies that have achieved the rating for sexuality, such as Bad Lieutenant, Killer Joe and Shame. As compared to Requiem for a Dream, this movie has no shots of penetration, but there are shots of female genitalia. Also, in the case of Bad Lieutenant, Killer Joe, Requiem for a Dream and even Shame, the sexual content in those movies seemed to be more emotional, as compared to erotic.

Whatever. :P I'm so tired of hearing people bitch about the sexual content in this movie. It's an adult drama rated NC-17 for explicit sexual content. What are people expecting? There was a huge article in the New York Times yesterday and it was just bitching about how it is borderline pornography and how the directer has a fascination with girls asses like Quentin has with women feet. ;) It was stupid. If you don't like the content in the movie, don't see it.

Someone saw a lesbian sex scene between two young good-loking women and said it was disgusting....well, there's a big problem right there.

BTW, did any of you follow the huge scandal between the film's director and Lea Seydoux? It's a big deal in France. I have never seen the people involved into a Palme d'or winner undermine their own film as much as they did with the scandal. Pretty ridiculous too..

Actually, the Bjork/Lars von Trier feud was pretty bad for Dancer in the Dark, another Palme D'Or winner. Though they definitely never let it get as out of hand as this has gotten.

The controversy has been pretty annoying. There's always something in the news from one of them. I personally think it will hurt the film, but it did do great this weekend so who knows.

And I don't even get how those people could have gone to see this not having heard about the explicit content in the film.

Yeah, it never got to the point of the director claiming that the film shouldn't even be released because it has been "tarnished" and he has been "humiliated".

I do not believe the feud will hurt the film at the box office (may help), but it could definitely impact it as an Oscar contender. Critics groups, for example, who may have recognized Abdellatif Kechiche might shy away from him now.

Theater list!

The expansion plan:

Oct. 25 - 4 theaters
Nov. 1 - 25 (+21)
Nov. 8 - 58 (+33)

Looks pretty confident this far out.

This theater list has been updated significantly.

November 1st - +33 (37 total)
November 8th - +30 (67 total)
November 15th - +33 (100 total)
November 22nd - +8 (108 total)
November 27th - +1 (109 total)
November 29th - +1 (110 total)
December 6th - +1 (111 total)
December 8th - +1 (112 total)
December 13th - +1 (113 total)

Seems fairly aggressive and I'm sure more will be added in the days to come.

So far this is up to 33 theaters on MovieFone for Friday. Looks like it's expanding to more than what it was supposed to initially.

The link I posted earlier now has 33 new theaters for this Friday, making for a total of 37, and only 30 for November 8 (down from 33 when I first posted the link). Guess they bumped up the release a week at some of the theaters. Then they have another 34 theaters for November 15, which would bring its theater count to over 100 in four weeks (more theaters than Shame was ever in). They certainly seem to be getting bullish for the film.

I'm sure with the buzz more art theaters have been interested in booking the film.

Definitely. I think $2 million looks like a good bet right now (unless it tanks this weekend), so $3 million is probably the new goal? It's a tough number to reach, though I don't think it's impossible if it maintains this hype and acclaim.

I definitely believe 2 Million will happen. I'm hoping it can maintain an average between $10,000-$11,000 this weekend.

Walls just come tumbling down when it's hot French lesbians and not the dreaded penis. ;)

And now the film and the IFC Center have the Parents Television Council coming after them.

Controversy, sweet sweet controversy!

Ha. I'm pleased they're only serving to bring attention to the film and give it more buzz.

This is so true, though.

I have seen the film and it is good (fantastic acting, but I can't help, but question the director's motivation behind shooting long long explicit lesbian scenes with two young hot chicks.

Because pretty much all you read about them beforehand is true. The poster shoudl read "Based on the graphic novel Blue is the Warmest Color and inspired by Youporn". Because, man, the guy did some thorough research.

Do you think the leads are worthy of acting nominations?

It's actually going higher. It's up to 75 theaters on MovieFone for Friday so it's looking like it should be in 80 or so.

Looks to cross this mark this upcoming weekend.

IFC confirms this will not be released on VOD anytime soon despite people speculating it would be one simply because it was released by IFC.

Looks to be adding an additional 48 theaters this weekend which would bring the count to 119.

Though I'm not too surprised this is happening, the Blu-Ray and DVD which come out on February 11 will be under the Criterion Collection!
