Re: Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
Yeah, somewhere between $22,000-$25,000 is where I see it landing. Hopefully it doesn't go below $20,000. I think there will be enough buzz for it to.

I am still not sure this will get too many awards even though both the actress might get nominations.

Re: Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
I don't believe it will get any Oscar nominations, though it may have an outside chance at nominations for Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.
If it gets to 1 million or more, it will be because of art-house hype (and controversy), sterling reviews, etc. in advance of the morning nominations are announced, similar to Shame.

I don't think it will get any nominations either. I would have thought it likely if it were eligible for Foreign Film but since it's not I'm not expecting any. Would be great to see the actresses get recognized but it seems highly unlikely. Though I believe it will absolutely be nominated for Foreign Film at the Golden Globes and could score a nomination for one or both of the actresses there as well.

Re: Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
I am predicting Actress and Screenplay nominations for the film, but admittedly those are both longshots that could fall through. But I'm expecting at least an Actress win from one of the major critics groups (NY, LA, NSFC), which might help it in the art houses.

Theater list!The expansion plan: Oct. 25 - 4 theaters Nov. 1 - 25 (+21) Nov. 8 - 58 (+33) Looks pretty confident this far out.

Re: Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
It is fairly similar to the expansion plans of the last few IFC releases in which they had a certain high level of confidence. Your Sister's Sister expanded from 13 theatres to 47 to 94. Frances Ha expanded from 4 to to 60 to 132. It will be very interesting to see how this fares as a three-hour film. Rated NC-17. With subtitles. A total close to Frances Ha's (4 million) would be incredible, I believe.

Yeah, 4 Million would be really incredible, IMO.
I'll be traveling to Minneapolis on November 3rd to see it. Excited!

Lust, Caution pretty much matched those criteria as well (the runtime is a little shorter, but still clocks at 2:38), and it made $4.6m 6 years ago. Its theater count for the first 3 weeks was 1/17/77. Something similar is pretty doable IMO, especially with Blue having better Oscar prospect.

Was Lust, Caution a bit of an easier sell, though, I wonder? If only due to Ang Lee.

I think it was. It was Ang Lee after winning an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain.

And he is just a big name in general, from Sense and Sensibility to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to Brokeback Mountain.

Re: Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
Quote: Blue Is The Warmest Color Director-writer: Abdellatif Kechiche Writers: Julie Maroh (story), Galia Lacroix (adaptation) Cast: Adèle Exarchopoulos, Léa Seydoux, Salim Kechiouche, Aurélien Recoing, Catherine Salée, Benjamin Siksou Distributor: Sundance Selects
Much has been talked about the 2013 Cannes Palme d’Or winner, Blue Is The Warmest Color. The festival, lead by festival juror Steven Spielberg even gave recognition to the film’s two leads, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux with special Palme d’Ors of their own. The film centers on Adèle, a young woman who meets Emma, with whom she falls in love with as the pair embark on a passionate relationship.
The post-Cannes public spats between filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche and his leads, especially Léa Seydoux, have kept the film in the news, even as its now famous sex scenes have been fodder for press attention at the film’s premieres at the Toronto and New York film festivals. In the lead-up to the film’s release, New York’s IFC Center told The New York Times that it would allow teenagers to buy tickets to the screening, going against the convention of banning under aged audiences from seeing an NC-17 rated feature. “This is not a movie for young children, but it is our judgment that it is not inappropriate for mature, inquiring teenagers who are looking ahead to the emotional challenges and opportunities that adulthood holds,” John Vanco, SVP and general manager of IFC Center said to NYT. High school age patrons will be welcome, at least at that venue. IFC Films’ sister label Sundance Selects picked up Blue out of Cannes, ahead of its Palme d’Or win. “We were with Abdellatif [Kechiche] for The Secret Of The Grain (2007) and we like continuing relationships with people we admire,” said IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring. “Quite frankly [those on our team] who saw it at the first screening had very diverse perspectives, but they all thought it was a masterpiece and we had to have it…They usually don’t agree on everything. It was by far and away the best film in the festival.” Sehring said they decided to take the NC-17 since some exhibitors won’t take an unrated film. The distributor also didn’t want to ask the filmmaker to cut the film. “Do I think the whole rating system is flawed? Absolutely… It’s a bit absurd, but that’s the rating,” said Sehring. “There are a lot of successful movies that have an NC-17 rating, but it seems absurd when it’s about first love and passion and nobody’s killing anybody. Two of the characters are high school students.” Sehring noted that the film received a U 12 in France, which is akin to a PG-13 in the U.S. (save a year). “I can pull together hundreds of examples of mayhem and murder and get R ratings,” added Sehring. “I don’t know what negative love and passion can have on anybody. There are times we won’t submit a movie for a rating, but on this one we thought it would be disingenuous.”
Sehring said the exhibition community has been “great” with this release, noting the “best set of theaters” are lined up for the theatrical rollout Stateside despite the competitive market. “It’s an incredibly competitive time,” he added. “We are encouraged by the critical response and the buzz around it. The movie is great and we’re confident the word of mouth will be extremely good. The performances are fantastic [and] I hope it will have a life in awards season but I’m not one to predict. As the French producers said it’s already won the Palme d’Or.” Blue Is The Warmest Color will open at IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza in New York as well as the Arclight and Landmark in Los Angeles. It will head to 5 to 7 additional markets the following weekend. http://www.deadline.com/2013/10/special ... -to-fight/I hope this does great business this weekend.

I might. Or I might see it on the 8th when it opens at a closer theatre.

Grossed $35,800 on Friday for a per-screen average of $8,950. Awesome start.

Ugh, Canada . I thought they just made a mistake with the theater count. David had posted something earlier saying it seemed to be heading for over $100,000 for the weekend. I'm going to hope it's not including Canadian theaters.

David wrote: Quote: The big headline at the specialty box office is Abdellatif Kechiche's French film Blue Is the Warmest Color, which is opening to solid business in New York and Los Angeles for IFC Films.
The steamy lesbian drama could gross $100,000 or more from four theaters, a strong showing for a foreign-language film. Blue Is the Warmest Color is rated NC-17, meaning that no one under 17 is allowed in. However, the IFC Center in New York has announced it will allow in teenagers it deems appropriate, regardless of age (the ratings system is voluntary). http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/b ... dpa-651089With all of the evening shows at the IFC selling out last night it's hard to believe that $38,500 would include Canada. That would give it a Friday average below $3,000 which seems very unlikely.

The 11:30pm show ends just in time to watch the sun rise over New York.

Re: Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
got to see this.
utterly mesmerizing. i had NO idea what this was about & the sex scenes take up like 1/50th of the screen time. tyhe main actress is really good.
holy hell was it long though. def. dragged at times, part. when theyre older & it becomes obvious whats oging to happen.
also very political movie
