Post Re: Gravity
It might be scarier if George's character died abruptly. His death scene is such a Death Scene: perfectly contrived so he can nobly sacrifice himself to save her ("NO! I WILL GET TO YOU!" "NO! IT'S TOO LATE FOR ME!") and then have the chance to wax melancholy and cheer her on as he floats away.

Very similar, too, to Tim Robbins' death in Mission to Mars if anyone remembers it.

Well, apparently 90% of the world disagrees on that.

Well, fair enough. I think for most audiences their heart was racing quite a bit. I've seen it yesterday for the second time, this time with my girlfriend and she was on the edge of her seat the whole time, stating that she hasn't been this stressed out during a film in years.

Funny thing, though...most critics at my screening liked it, but I think there were one or two that felt it had unnecessary "lengths" and dragged in spots. I was like "WTF?" I could understand someone accusing the film of the opposite (though still disagree), but lengths??

Those were on the nose, but I wasn't bothered.

I did, however, care for the character and I did not necessarily forsee her surviving. It could have just as well been an open ending.

Clive Owen learning to "live again" in Children of Men is so, so, so much more poignant and earned than Sandra's arc here. God, the gap between the films is so enormous. I cannot believe Gravity is enjoying a relatively warmer reception among critics.

and yeah, for all its technical prowess, Gravity is not in the same league as Children of Men.

She did die though!

lolz nah bro. bitch aint dead.

imagie if the film ended with Bullock ended up floating in space, losing her oxygen. We hear her last gasps and then...silence. We see her body floating along in space, farther and farther away until we no longer can see it across the backdrop of the stars. Cut to black. Title screen.

Prety sure commerically it would do far worse but I personally would have enjoyed that more.

That would be an extremely dumb ending.

Holy shit I would hate to know you in real life. You suck. You and David have almost ruined this thread by being idiots.

Also, Lecter is right. This is better than CoM.

Post Re: Gravity
I pretty much agree with what David and Magnus said. I didn't get to care for any of the characters for there was too little time for build up. I'd take recent sci-fi disaster films like War of the Worlds (2005) and Cloverfield as examples of the opposite. These two created perfect build-up to get to know and care for the characters. The disaster also didn't begin instantly in these two, giving more time to absorb into the characters and their situation unlike this one.

Children of Men is a far more superior film in almost every aspect. But the stunning shots of Earth from space did it all for me, so it was hard to not be blown away by this film.

Having said those this is still the best film I've seen so far this year that's not a re-release. I fully expect to enjoy this a lot more when I see it in IMAX 3D.

Pretty much this. Did anyone ever feel that concerned for Bullocks character?

Clooney died too soon; we obviously were not going to follow Bullock around - alone - for half a film just to see her bite it in the end.

I think 90% of people felt concerned for her. Because we have emotions.

I admit I've been somewhat (okay, flat-out) trolling in this thread. Unlike g, I actually do like the film (though fully do believe it's not at the level of masterpiece as some are indicating). I'm being far more critical and negative than I really should be and actually feel. If I scrutnizied every film like I just did with Gravity it'd be near impossible to like any film.

But the reponses are worth it, so I'll probably just troll so hard until I'm bored with it.

Or someone makes sure you cannot post in this part of the boards *cough cough*

also, in my fantasy ending, Clooney actually somehow manages to live. And not cause of triumph of the human spirit, but because he's fucking George Clooney so he can do anything he wants.

So you wanted Clooney to live and Bullock to die. Why am I not surprised. lol

I like Magnus' ending. Space is overwhelming and should not be so easily conquered by humans. Though I did really like the last shot, corny as it was.

It wasn't "easily" conquered. They/she was literally inches from death MULTIPLE times. And... it's a movie.

127 Hours covers similar thematic ground in a much more satisfying way.

I would also place Gravity slightly below another harrowing survival tale, Vertical Limit.
