At the moment I'm seeing...

Josh Brolin "Labor Day"
Bradley Cooper "American Hustle"
Michael Fassbender "12 Years a Slave"
Tom Hanks "Saving Mr. Banks"
Matthew McConaughey "The Wolf of Wall Street"

Alternates (ranked)
1. Daniel Brühl "Rush"
2. Tim Roth "Grace of Monaco"
3. Jonah Hill "The Wolf of Wall Street"

Is Hanks going to be considered supporting?

Surely Hanks would be top-billed in both Saving Mr. Banks and Captain Phillips. Although I could see then thinking that Thompson is top-billed in the former.

I figure he will campaign as a supporting player for Saving Mr. Banks, ceding the spotlight to Emma Thompson in part, since he is obviously, obviously the lead in Captain Phillips (as...Captain Phillips).

It would be great if he won supporting and best actor in the same year. But I doubt that will ever happen. I don't think he'll even be up for supporting for Mr. Wanks Savings Bank - Mr. Hanks' Sperm Bank.

It'd be so fucking unfair to have Daniel Brühl pushed into the supporting category for Rush. He's clearly the film's lead.

The marketing doesn't support your claim. Not good.

Well, considering no one knows Brühl outswide of Germany, I'm not surprised the marketing doesn't put him front and center. However, I have seen the film.

Sure, and I'm not calling you a liar. I'm just saying that it wouldn't be "so fucking unfair" if he was pushed into the supporting category considering the power of marketing of the viewers mind.

Well, I assume the voters would have to see the movie first before voting and then realize that he is lead.

That said, I have little doubt that IF he is nominated, it'll be supporting, just like Foxx for Collateral. It'd still be unfair. But I guess better than no nom at all.

Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave) puts in a tour-de-force performance here. He's assured of a nod. Definitely better than 4/5 of the performances last year in this category (probably a weaker year), but I can't say this category is as much a lock as best actor is.

The only reason I'd say there's a chance he could lose this is that he's overshadowed by Chiwetel Ejiofor's lead performance who carries the movie. Fassbender is fantastic but his performance isn't the one that leaves the biggest emotional impact in the film. Fassbender may only be in about half of the movie as well, but he's fantastic when he is on screen.

The trailer is actually very deceiving and shows Pitt in the movie a lot more than he actually is (understandable since he's a big movie star). He's in the movie for about 10 minutes it felt like. He's alright but it really is a fleeting performance. He's there and then he's gone.

The only way I can see him with a chance at a best supporting nod is if its a very weak year. He's just hardly there...

The best part of his performance was actually not related to his performance. He says in the movie that he is Canadian and the audience I was with (TIFF screening in Toronto) erupted into cheers.

Barkhad Abdi should be in serious contention here for playing the lead Somali pirate in Captain Phillips. A phenomenal performance. I know it would be a bit of an uphill battle just because, "George Clooney! Bradley Cooper! Michael Fassbender! Harrison Ford! Jared Leto! Jeremy Renner! ...Barkhad Abdi?" The performance is definitely a major achievement, though, and integral to the film. Perhaps Sony can turn his unique career arc as a Somali born actor into a positive.

I'm pretty sure Clooney can get swept up on the Gravity train and be nominated. Before anyone tries to refute that, I should point out that Jacki Weaver got nominated last year. So...

Damn, that'd be really undeserving, though.

I think Jacki Weaver's case is different because she was one of four nominees from her film. It was the actors' flick, so to say.

Clooney's case is bolstered by the fact that he's a relatively frequent nominee. He's been nominated for something every other year going back to his win for Syriana (so with it having been 2 years since The Descendants, he would be due for that pattern to repeat itself).

That said, I currently expect the acting branch to see Gravity as The Sandra Bullock Show and leave Clooney off the shortlist.

Clooney has several shots at a nomination this year. Best Supporting Actor for Gravity. Nominations for his various job titles in The Monuments Men: actor, director, producer, and screenwriter. He is also a producer on August: Osage County.

It's funny how Lecter loved Gravity... yet takes every opportunity to bash it's Oscar chances at anything.

Because he's a realist. He doesn't live in wonderland like you, where if you love a movie you automatically think it's going to win 12 Oscars.

I don't think Gravity and Gatsby are going to win 12 Oscars.
