Re: Ten most underrated films of the 21st century so far?
I'm going with my list on a few films that I still can't believe most of my friends, and people have just never heard of. A couple even roll their eyes at me.
1. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang 2. Frequency 3. Insomnia 4. The Illusionist 5. Just Friends/ Waiting 6. Spartan 7. The Punisher 8. Rat Race 9. Dark Blue 10. Frailty
I'd also put the Crank films in there as well. Much more than the typical Statham films he gets stuck in.

Re: Ten most underrated films of the 21st century so far?
Frequency has almost become a bit of a minor cult favorite, hasn't it? A lot of people mention it with reverence. Beneath the suspense elements, the use of a "time-travel" conceit to explore father/son estrangement seems to move a lot of people in a Field of Dreams type way.

I agree, just always thought it was overlooked when released, and KKBB is certainly loved online. These movies could always use more fans in my opinion.

Oh, and spot-on call on Spartan, which sadly slipped my mind last night, but 100 percent yes. Masterful espionage movie. I love the rhythm of the storytelling and the downbeat, spy-who-can't-come-in-from-the-cold ending.

Re: Ten most underrated films of the 21st century so far?
The Assassination of Jesse James... is an interesting one. Great film, and I would have described it as undervalued without a moment's hesitation in 2007, but I believe the Internet film community and word-of-mouth among serious moviegoers has greatly increased its standing, similar to Children of Men, In Bruges, and the Before Sunrise series.

Jesse James feels forgotten to me. It's a great great movie I've seen many times by now and I sure hope you are right about its reputation.

Observe and Report is definitely one of the funniest movies in recent years.

David wrote: I am not sure if Bright Star is underrated or not. I was tempted to include it. I obviously love the film (one of my all-time favorites, honestly) and wish it were an enormous hit, but it did not completely flop, and the reviews were through-the-roof glowing. Another Year is also an example in this vein.
The criteria for things like these are vague. I'd include movies that: - Were not huge commercial hits (depends on the budget of course) - Did not receive GLOWING reviews (80+ on Metacritic, 85+% on RT) - Did not develop a major following (Garden State, Fight Club etc.) - Did not win any major Oscars I can't think of many films that do not belong to at least one of the above that I really loved (i.e. my Top 5 of their respective year). Three of the top of my head: Enemy at the Gates (maybe the best war-film released after Saving Private Ryan until now) Mean Creek (powerful, powerful film. Will leave you devastated) Crazy Stupid Love - Okay, this was a solid financial success, but I feel like this will be forgotten soon and IMO it is the best romcom since Love Actually and features a better Ryan Gosling performance than in Drive. There. Hesher (one of the best films of 2011) State of Play (fantastic remake of a fantastic TV mini-series)

Big Nothing from the same director is one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen - do you think I'll like this one? They are so very different (except for some flashes of really dark humor in Dead End), but I don't really know anyone who has seen Dead End and did not like it somewhat at least.

Both Punisher movies were good. I prefer the Thomas Jane one, though.

Didn't see the second page but agree with Enemy at the Gates, Frequency and Kiss Kiss.
Will also add two films that opened the same day and did strong BO but seem forgotten - The Patriot and The Perfect Storm.

I don't think Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is no longer underrated. It has been considered underrated for so long and so widely, that I firmly believe it has gathered quite a following by now,

Weren't they all Oscar nominated? I love 21 Grams, but it was not underrated. It did well for a small film.

Re: Ten most underrated films of the 21st century so far?
The fact Disney/Marvel entrusted Iron Man 3 to Shane Black is the ultimate testament to how beloved Kiss Kiss Bang Bang has become.
I also agree with the three titles Algren questioned. Training Day: financial hit, Oscar winner, always on television, etc. And The Live of Others is very widely viewed, and very well regarded, for a small foreign-language film. I would not hesitate to say it is one of the ten most widely seen foreign-language films of the last ten years around the world, and it did result in Angelina Jolie and Sony recruiting the director for The Tourist (and the rest is history, as it were).
