Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
Yeah DOFP is better positioned than Wolverine. Though it will come out after Spiderman-2 I am sure Spidey will make 75% or more of its OS total by its first 3 weekends. After DOFP's release date the only action movie as of now is TMNT before Transformers in 5 weeks. TMNT wont be as big numbers in OS markets IMO.

It made $13.3 million this weekend and stands at $140 million overseas. It still has Japan ahead and could make $280 million worldwide without Japan. If it breaks out a little there (or actually gets a China release), $300+ million is happening. Which is quite big. That's quite astonishing really. It's The Expendables 2-sized. I really will definitely see it if it comes out here - been looking forward to it since I saw the first trailer, and I haven't seen anything of it since then, so the hook was definitely there.

Now You See Me is original movie so it is definitely doing better than Expendables movies.

The Great Gatsby is getting a Chinese release: Aug 30th. But don't expect it to do well. It's already online. I added it to my queue. But I will now delete it and watch at the cinema. It's better that way. Don't expect the Chinks to do that, though.
The Wolverine is pegged for September, an unknown date, so it could also be October.

Good to know Gatsby being released. Wolverine should come out in September if it wants to make any money in China

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
How would September help?
Mid-Autumn festival is at the end of September for 3 days, and the remaining 6 days is in October. The Wolverine should have been released in August if it wanted to make any money. This is when the kids are off school. In September they are all back at school. But this is why the Chinese have done this. All the Chinese movies are now playing in cinemas and there are no big US releases at all (or very few old holdovers).

Wasn't talking in terms of school holidays. I meant in terms of Piracy. I am sure the movie would be out soon so it should be released in September than October. I never thought it would make too much in China anyways.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
Piracy is not an issue here anymore than for any other movie. Most movies get released here 2-3 months after their US release, and most movies make good money here, so piracy will not affect The Wolverine any differently, which means it could still make good money - it just needs to find a good date.

Hmm...I thought releasing movies later would hinder a movie's BO prospects in China as more pirated copies would have been distributed by then. Is it not the case (specially with blockbusters)?

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
No, you are correct. All that I'm saying is that you wouldn't notice any difference in box office revenue of The Wolverine being released in September or October because all movies are released here late anyway, and movies in China do make good money regardless of when they are released.
I am the first to say that if everybody stopped pirating from now on, then considering the population size of China, a blockbuster movies' opening could make about $60m, but piracy is accepted here, and has been for a long time, so it makes no difference anymore, and the parameters for success in China have are ingnorant to the piracy issue.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon, you may have thought had a good box office gross in China, and it sure did as it is the highest grossing foreign movie here (I think, or it's #2), but in reality it didn't perform half as well as it should have because of piracy. But we don't care about that anymore and so we make new thresholds.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
Aah I see! So there is still a set of audience that wait for theatrical releases. Its still about exciting that group of people (albeit small comparatively) so releasing in September or October does not really dampen its BO too much.

Quote: This weekend, The Wolverine passed X-Men: First Class at the foreign box office, where it has so far banked $214.8 million. It will become the highest-grossing X-Men movie ahead of The Last Stand ($225 million) by next weekend, and it still has plenty of money left to earn when it finally expands in to Japan on September 13th. With China and Japan ahead, $300 million overseas is VERY likely now.

Oh and one of the biggest winners of the year is still Now You See Me. Up to $158,000,000 overseas after this weekend and with Japan still ahead. It will finish above $300 million worldwide.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
The Wolverine could easily do $300m-$310m OS which is a great news for the series. DOFP would really explode if marketed well.

Yeah 300 would be amazing for it. It should do over 400 million WW and finish as the second highest grossing X-Men film. DOFP should explode next year. I could see it doing at least 400 million OS.

I believe DOFP can do more than $400m OS. I am thinking a big increase for $500m OS, not sure it will happen but that's my expectation out of it.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
That's a Sparrow Hall of Fame quote right there^
There's no chance that DOFP does $500m overseas. The highest-grossing X-Men movie so far is The Last Stand with $225m, and First Class only got $207m. I doubt very much that it will increase 150%. It will probably increase to about $300m and that's it. These X-Men movies have never been HUGE and I see no reason that DOFP will be either, especially since the franchise has had SIX attempts in the last 13 years and has never even made $250m overseas.

I have a Hall of Fame? Thanks You don't see chance in anything making much money anyways, so coming from you it anyways sounds stupid What's wrong in me expecting $500m OS from DOFP. It is being positioned as the biggest summer tentpole as of now.

TF4,TASM2,HTTY2... Good Dinosaur will make more than HTTY2. As or T4 and ASM2 we shall see. Spiderman will be interesting not sure how liked the first one was. I don't see a big increase and it could even have a decrease. T4 will probably make less than the previous films but will still do over 300 million. And Algren you need to edit what you said as Wolverine has already past Last Stand and will make at least 300 million OS.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Man of Steel #1 again
I would also like to point out this article that posted why X-Men could be the biggest movie of 2014 http://www.boxoffice.com/articles/2013- ... lm-of-2014As I said it might not happen and I won't consider it a fail or flop if it doesn't make $500m OS but given the increase the series saw and the general boom of superhero genre specially in OS markets makes way for such high profile movie like this to get $500m OS.....but we will see.

Yeah, it's hard to really guage it. Last Stand was huge OS for the series, but then the series shifted greatly two times in a row (Standalone, then reboot) Wolverine is at least making 275, and the higher profile, return to the former glory, etc will give it an extra boost. I'm not saying 500 is possible, it is, but it needs an IM3 type increase. But if it can manage something like 350-450 is extremely likely for it.
