Re: Olympus Has Fallen
Gerard McClane and President Dent slowly leave the destroyed White House, stepping around an untold number of corpses: men and women who died protecting the president.
GERARD McCLANE I am sorry your house was destroyed.
PRESIDENT DENT (grins) It's insured.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
Yes it's ridiculous and insanely over the top, but damn it I still had ALOT of fun with it. This is the COD/shoot em up approach done right IMO. Unlike AGDTDH this movie actually delivered on what it promises which is a badass, incredibly violent, bloody, roller-coaster ride.
It was great seeing GB kicking so much ass again and honestly out of the two White House movies coming out this year I wouldn't be surprised if this one ended up being the best of the two. For some reason I don't think I will be able to take CT as seriously as a badass as Butler.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
With its deeper-than-expected cast, half rendered computer-generated images, heavy brutality, and an outmoded nineties style betrayed only by a strained bid to draw from September 11th while avoiding the specter of direct political or social responsibility, Olympus Has Fallen has a few unwieldy charms, including the masculine charm and brute physical presence of Gerard Butler in traditional action-hero mode, but the fuel runs low long before the two hours are through, several ace talents are squandered in peripheral roles, and the almost sadistic love of the preposterous which defines the script tested my patience.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN
When I first saw the trailer I was very interested in this but I was worried that because it had Gerard Butler as the star with Aaron Eckhart among others that it was destined to open in the 20s maybe and top out at 50 or 60, but the weekend numbers came out and it did 30 million. Well deserved imo. I've heard some opinions about how this was Die Hard in the White House or this is the kind of action film that Die Hard Russia should have been. I agree with that too. This was very entertaining and good with the deaths, gun fighting, action sequences and what not. The 2nd tier roles were done well by Freeman and Leo. Freeman is just the man to be President, isn't he? Anyway, Butler did a great job in the film, enjoyed the action plot as well.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
Found it rather dull in spite of the almost nonstop action on display. Not as bad as the latest Die Hard but not very good either. White House Down will be even worse too because it won't have the sometimes overkill regarding the violence/bloodshed that this has.

And I hate Tatum, Gyllenhaal, and Foxx so my mind was already made up way back when they were cast. Tatum is a lunkhead, Gyllenhaal is fugly, and Foxx is an arrogant d-bag. Don't plan on seeing White House Down at all because it looks like a gargantuan waste of time. Lately, I'm finding Hollywood movies in general kind of boring. They're all safe and otherwise the same.

Also reminded me that Aaron Eckhart needs to do more movies.

I am guilty of this, but you don't know for certain White House Down will be worse. I do end up giving plenty of movies chances even if I have an idea of what I'll think of them. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm especially more likely to if reviews are good. For example, I'd never loved a James Bond movie. I thought Casino Royale was decent but not enough to bother seeing Quantum of Solace. So I didn't see Skyfall theatrically as I didn't think I'd love it. But I gave it a chance on Blu-ray due to the great things I'd heard and it made my top ten of 2012. Sometimes you never know. Though being from Roland Emmerich I'm pretty sure WHD won't be a great movie . But it might be an entertaining popcorn film.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
Toss Olympus Has Fallen into the large pile of movies from the last quarter-century that have tried to recapture the magic of Die Hard and missed. The film gets off to a solid start, and the takeover of the White House is well staged, but it starts to run out of steam after that point, and it becomes too grim and too generic to be genuinely entertaining. Gerard Butler does well in the physical demands of his role, but both his performance and his character lack the charisma necessary to fully sell him to the audience. Rick Yune, who previously played a villain in Die Another Day, is a stock action movie villain: easily predisposed to violence, but otherwise not very menacing or interesting to watch. While no one else in the cast embarrasses themselves, they also don't do anything particularly memorable. I would say that the film ought to be given credit for not compromising in regard to the violence (it's a hard R, complete with dozens and dozens of headshots, lots of blood spurts, and a few knives to heads), but it does nothing to elevate the low level of tension. It's an unremarkable experience, and hopefully Roland Emmerich will do something more outlandishly fun with the same concept in the upcoming White House Down.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
Overall, I quite enjoyed this. Yes there are dumb parts, but Butler was very good in the lead and had several fun scenes. I thought the action was well done. It could have used a dose of creativity but in the end I enjoyed it.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
Melissa Leo was absolutely, positively, certifiably batshit fucking insane in this movie. Was there any scenery left over that she didn't chew?
I assume her performance comprises most of the 3 percent David still remembers.

Re: Olympus Has Fallen
This was awful. I mean, I expected ridiculous, but the biggest problem is that it's just boring. A very forgettable movie and I believe it's the worst I've seen so far in 2013.
