Is there any doubt that a song from Gatsby will be winning Best Song?

The question is... which one?

I believe Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" will be the strongest contender because it is a beautiful song (subjective, I know) and also because it is so integral to the film, more integral than the Florence and xx songs.

Yes. "We Own It" by 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa is going to win Best Song.

 It's gonna win. I don't really see how anything could beat it.

Drudge Report had a headline about Oprah blowing away folks in her turn in the Butler.

Definitely. The question is whether it can become a contender for picture or director.

Blue Jasmine seems like a very solid contender for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress now. Director will depend on the competition.

Not sure about the competition later this year, but Cate Blanchett could be very well looking at her second Oscar.

Her competition may include Sandra Bullock for Gravity and Naomi Watts for the Princess Diana film.

I wonder how Before Midnight will fare this Oscar season. I definitely see a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination (same as Sunset), but it may be too niche to receive any other nominations.

Yeah, that's probably it. I am hoping for Mud to at least score a screenplay nod.

It should surprise no one that Oprah is already hauling ass on the campaign trail for The Butler. Excuse me, Lee Daniels' The Butler.

This magazine cover is glorious.

I remember Oprah fired Peter Weir from Beloved because he suggested she was not the best choice for the lead role, lol.

If The Butler could have the legs as The Help did at the box office, it could have a shot at some noms. The reviews are similar, although the acting ensemble isn't getting as glowing a review as The Help's cast. Whitaker seems to be the most possible bet.

Oprah is far and away its best bet for an acting nomination. It is -Oprah- delivering a big, emotional, colorful performance.

Gravity seems like a lock for most major awards based on early reviews.

Edit: TC beat me to it.

Gravity is officially premiering at the Venice Film Festival in a few hours. It had an earlier press screening this morning, and some of the random reaction is rolling in.

Trade reviews:

The Hollywood Reporter wrote:
At once the most realistic and beautifully choreographed film ever set in space, Gravity is a thrillingly realized survival story spiked with interludes of breath-catching tension and startling surprise. Not at all a science fiction film in the conventional sense, Alfonso Cuaron's first feature in seven years has no aliens, space ship battles or dystopian societies, just the intimate spectacle of a man and a woman trying to cope in the most hostile possible environment across a very tight 90 minutes. World premiered at the Venice Film Festival, with Telluride showings following quickly on its heels, this Warner Bros. release is smart but not arty, dramatically straightforward but so dazzlingly told as to make it a benchmark in its field. Graced by exemplary 3D work and bound to look great in IMAX, the film seems set to soar commercially around the world.

Variety wrote:
About halfway through Alfonso Cuaron’s astonishing “Gravity,” Sandra Bullock, playing a lost astronaut stranded 375 miles above Earth, seeks refuge in an abandoned spacecraft and curls into a floating fetal position, savoring a brief respite from her harrowing journey. Of the many sights to behold in this white-knuckle space odyssey, a work of great narrative simplicity and visual complexity, it’s this image that speaks most eloquently to Cuaron’s gifts as a filmmaker: He’s the rare virtuoso capable of steering us through vividly imagined worlds and into deep recesses of human feeling. Suspending viewers alongside Bullock for a taut, transporting 91 minutes (with George Clooney in a sly supporting turn), the director’s long-overdue follow-up to “Children of Men” is at once a nervy experiment in blockbuster minimalism and a film of robust movie-movie thrills, restoring a sense of wonder, terror and possibility to the bigscreen that should inspire awe among critics and audiences worldwide.

Gravity: brilliant immersive intelligent scifi. Blockbusters don't get much better. #Venezia70 @cinevue

Gravity: by turns profound & uproarious fusion of Michael Bay and Jean-Paul Sartre. Cuarón has absolutely nailed this. #Venice2013

Gabriele Capolino ‏@gabrielecapo 3m
Gravity took my breath away... Technically amazing. Super Cuaron #Venezia70

GRAVITY (A) Mainlined sensation. A staggering dance, then a balletic fall, into great silence. Maybe I'd change a thing? We'll talk later.

Kate Muir ‏@muirkate 6m
GRAVITY: a seat-chewingly tense, virtuoso 90 minutes of cinema. Bullock and Clooney terrific. A tad heavy on sentimentality. #Venezia70

Nick de Semlyen ‏@NickdeSemlyen 2m
Now that the embargo is up, I can say that what Jaws did for water, Gravity does for air.

Lorenzo C. ‏@rotovisor 2m
#Venezia70 #Gravity is the gamechanger we were waiting for! Masterful directing by Cuaron and astonishing performance by Sandra Bullock!

Michael Leader ‏@Nevskyp 2m
Gravity: orbital rollercoaster which wrests reflection and tension out of isolated, vulnerable space setting. Remarkable. #Venezia70

Matic Majcen ‏@maticmajcen 12m
Alfonso Cuaron #GRAVITY Apollo 13, Cast Away, that kinda film, that kinda level, top of the genre 4.5/5 #venezia70

AurelioVindigniRicca ‏@avindigniricca 2m
Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for much less. Extraordinary. #Gravity #Venezia70

Ken Adams ‏@TaybackX 2m
GRAVITY is sensational heart-pounding cinema at its best, and the work of a true auteur that goes by the name of Alfonso Cuaron. #Venezia70

alexandra zawia ‏@alexandrazawia 2m
#Gravity : Cuarón masters the visuals impeccably but potentially philosoph. *deep* space turns to commonplace & offbeat symbolism #Venezia07

So 'Gravity' turns out to be absolutely friggin' amazing. Quelle surprise! :-)"

Mas Setiawan ‏@ssetiawan 2m
Gravity clocked in at 90 minutes. Not all good movies should make your butt numb.
