 Re: 2015 - A modern record year?
Don't forget about Ice Age 5 which should be out in 2015 if Fox continues its pattern of releasing sequels every 3 years. IA5 should reach $800m WW.

I still think Pirates moves. Does the film even have a director yet?

Unbelievable set of movies. Can't see everything doing good. Middle movies also have to do good.

 Re: 2015 - A modern record year?
When was Madagascar 4 announced?
We don't even know what middle-budget films are on the schedule. There's bound to be at least one breakout/sleeper along them.
Will all these the tentpole sequels do gangbusters? Probably not. I can already see something like Pirates 5, Alvin 4, B.O.O. and/or Inferno underperforming (at least domestically), but still grossing enough to be considered hits.
Still, this May-June showed that even if several $200m+ grossers perform below expectations, like STID/MOS/MU all did, they can nevertheless add up to a hell of a lot.
Also, if my prediction of audiences abandoning 3D so they can afford to see all these movies comes true, some releases will have a lower ratio of gross to attendance, and appear to be underperforming even though they really aren't.
To provide a current example, I think MU is selling more tickets than its gross indicates, because on top of its already low 3D share, it lost a lot of 3D showings after DM2 opened - including it's premium IMAX-wannabe auditoriums.
And speaking of DM2, because of its low 3D share, combined with MOS plummeting as soon as it lost its IMAX screens - indicating that it's grosses were being propped up by higher-priced IMAX sales - I honestly believe that DM2 has already sold more tickets than MOS, even though its gross is still lower at this point.
OK, I went off on a tangent, my points are: 1.) Overall grosses for 2015 won't be badly hurt if a few films have softer performances, due to the sheer amount of releases; 2.) If audiences pass on 3D and save that money for another 2D ticket to something else, certain films' grosses will be deflated relative to their admissions.

yeeeeesh. I think they should spread the movies out throughout the year, not everything needs to open in summer.

 Re: 2015 - A modern record year?
Just once I want to see what happens when they release a guaranteed hit in a month like January or September. I know it's not good for weekdays and legs and such but it'd be really cool to see.

That would be stupid. Despite how cool this summer will be, SW is just going to own.

 Re: 2015 - A modern record year?
So far the calendar (in terms of tentpoles) looks as follows:
January - empty
February - empty
March - Fantastic Four, Cinderella, Penguins of Madagascar
April - empty
May - The Avengers 2
June - Assassin's Creed, BOO, Inside Out (Pixar), Terminator
July - ID4 Pt2, Pirates 5, Smurfs 3
August - empty
September - Hotel Transylvania 2
October - empty
November - Bond, Ant Man, Peanuts, Finding Dory, Hunger Games 4
December - Inferno, KFP3, Alvin & Chipmunks 4
The schedule still lacks structure and if not properly scheduled or a lack of mid level films - the biggies wont help the overall yearly BO as they should. Still a number of key films to slot in.
December is still empty so something big could move there - perhaps Pirates unless something better gets announced.
The only fully (at least with big films) scheduled months so far are March, June and November really. The wealth needs to be spread around.

 Re: 2015 - A modern record year?
Still plenty of slots available... If Star Wars doesn't go to May - then we could be in for a week second half of the month - much like 2012.
I'd guess:
January - empty
February - empty
March - Fantastic Four, Cinderella, Penguins of Madagascar
April - empty
May - The Avengers 2, Star Wars VII
June - Assassin's Creed, BOO, Inside Out (Pixar), Terminator
July - ID4 Pt2, Pirates 5, Smurfs 3, Batman/Superman
August - Jurassic Park 4
September - Hotel Transylvania 2
October - empty
November - Bond, Ant Man, Peanuts, Finding Dory, Hunger Games 4
December - Inferno, KFP3, Alvin & Chipmunks 4
Still many prime Summer slots left - not to mention February, April and December.

 Re: 2015 - A modern record year?
JP4 in August is actually an intriguing idea. I have no idea why blockbusters have abandoned August. It could fit well in the same frame as Rise/Apes (and Universal hit it big with The Bourne Ultimatum in the same slot in '07).
The only other possibility would be an "early summer start" like Fast Five, but that would give the film only a week before Avengers 2, which would basically be the box office equivalent of the T-Rex vs. the raptors.
They could put it 2 weeks before A2; perhaps with the brand recognition it would fare better than Oblivion did. Though I still think early August is smarter than late April...
