Loathe it.

Making these goons into icons. Why don't they post Todd Beamers face instead.

Seriously, folks wonder why America has an obsession with darkness and death...

Icons? Huh? They put his face on their magazine and wrote, I'm sure, a very well written story on how horrible he turned out to be.

How does that make him an icon? He's only an icon if you let him be. Which is what YOU'RE doing.

Part of the problem is no doubt the fact he is relatively attractive. If this were a grainy picture of him with a filthy beard and a turban, people would be less outraged. They would just say, "Oh, Rolling Stone is doing a story on Mideast terrorism." The fact he could be a new member of MGMT changes the dynamic.

The reason they're stupid is they gave him a boy band cover shot. If they went with this there'd be some angry people at the article, but not nearly on a national scale

Why did you post a picture of Bob Dylan in the mid-sixties?

Oh, wait.

Lol this pic is like equally glamorized, if not moreso.

Doesn't the kid have some awkward yearbook photos they could have mulled through?

Glad the magazine finally found a controversy of which it is the center.

So when is RS ever going to put Kim Jung Un's face in the cover or is he not attractive enough to sell copies?

They put Daft Punk on the cover, and they don't even have faces.

I think the people who were offended by the RS cover image must have thought that the photo had to mean something (while it doesn't have to mean anything other than showing a past photo of a person's youth). The bombing suspect looking nice and clean in an authentic photo was deemed too human for them to look at.

I think people are offended that he looks like a normal white dude and not a scary arab.

All the controversy will just sell more copies though.

Here's the question... If it were a white man that did the bombing, and he was on the cover, would there be an outrage like this?

I don't think so.

what if George Zimmerman was the bomber?

If you visit the magazine's Facebook profile, for instance, you will see people are throwing incredibly dramatic bitch fits over this cover.

I find the controversy mystifying myself. The magazine has always covered political and social stories, not just music, and placement on the cover does not equal automatic glorification, particularly when said subject is directly described as a "monster." They put Charles Manson on the cover in 1970, for instance. I s'pose this is a disillusioning fact for many in America, but con men, murderers, religious radicals, war criminals, etc. and the questions raised by their existence are fascinating and therefore a natural subject for a magazine trying to move as many copies as they can to cover.

Well did you read the story, as look what the front page says, promising student failed by his parents...so is this true and fair?

It sure is a more provocative editorial choice than another cover focused on, say, the legacy of The Dark Side of the Moon.

I'm bothered by the context of this. I mean, I realize his face has already been posted hundreds of thousands of times in news articles and such. But Rolling Stone fundamentally promotes rock stars/celebrity on its cover. It shouldn't be a magazine that his face is on the cover of.

I'm not outraged, certainly, I just don't think it was a very good idea.

Agree.

Um. Rolling Stone doesn't have a lot of eyeballs looking at it's cover. Be upset at the media for promoting his name/face and "glamourizing" him after the event. They reach way more folks than a dying magazine.
