 Re: Friday Numbers
That would be the biggest opening day ever for Sandler. I'm not so sure it will be that frontloaded IM wise, I wouldn't consider it the typical sequel weekend kind of film.

I just double-checked, and the only non-action/animated/comedy movies to get a wide release since 42 opened back in mid-April have been Great Gatsby, Now You See Me, Before Midnight and Bling Ring. And considering that the first two were aimed at younger audiences more than older and that the last two were total non-events when they went wide, that definitely gives Fruitvale a big shot at breaking out of the Weinsteins handle it well. At the very least it should be good for matching Beasts of the Southern Wild's $12 million gross, I think. The Purge is action then? Ah, missed that one. Though like Gatsby and NYSM it was aimed mostly at youth. Man, studios really dropped the ball on movies aimed at adults this summer, didn't they? Well, if you look at age distribution, The Heat skewed pretty old actually. Still, only one wide release aimed largely at adults in the busiest three months of the year? This summer just seems more youth-aimed than just about any summer in recent memory. Not that the studios are suffering or anything, but I'm sure something that aimed for the "Over 25" spectrum would've thrived, especially since November/December/January ends up being so crowded. Something like Wolf of Wall St. probably could've cleaned up with a July/August release, assuming it's good.

I get what you mean, you don't just mean adult-oriented films, you actually mean "serious" films. Mostly dramas. Because if I look at age distributions: White House Down skewed older - 61% above 25 The Heat - 67% above 25 World War Z - 67% above 25 The Internship - 61% above 25 After Earth - 60% over 25 Star Trek into Darkness - 73% above 25 In other words - several films actually skewed older.

In other words - several films actually skewed older. The modern, action- and SFX-oriented blockbuster era started 35 years ago. A lot of the people who as kids and teens loved Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Terminator, Die Hard, etc, are now in their 40's and 50's. The current event movies are still more or less built on the same mold. Which explains why such a big part of the audience skews older.

 Re: Friday Numbers
Yep, I know. But that, of course, also makes them movies for older audiences, so it's not exactly true that the summer has been low on movies for older audiences. (unless you mean something like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel)

 Re: Friday Numbers
What Tuukka?
I feel like this has been a very older skewing summer of many years, even if there isn't one specific film directly targeting that (Red 2 an Gatsby are big though)

 Re: Friday Numbers
Well at least it's not a Poseidon-level flop. High 30s is not THAT bad.

(unless you mean something like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) Just to avoid confusion, I was agreeing with you all the way, and disagreeing with Jon. A big bulk of the action and SFX-driven movies of today *are* adult-driven movies. It's a dated idea that such movies would appeal mainly to sub-25 crowd.
