Post Re: The 3D thread
IMAX needs to ditch post-converted 3D. The screens are huge enough as is that they don't need it to sell the audience on "immersion" into the movie. And honestly, had it not been for the occasional irritation caused by wearing the glasses, I probably would have forgotten that I was watching Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel in 3D. In other words: they're at a point where, by and large, they have lost almost everything that made 3D look like it might have potential for enhancing the big screen experience.

I think if the studios hadn't beaten the format to death with all the unnecessary post-conversions, 3D might still be a decent moneymaker. But unless it's on an IMAX screen (where, at least up until select screenings of Man of Steel, you didn't have a choice), who's really itching to see post-converted 3D versions of Iron Man 3 or Star Trek Into Darkness?

Incidentally, I think The Avengers has the best post-conversion to date. It helps that Joss Whedon claims to have composed some shots with the conversion in mind, but it actually succeeded in adding a bit of pop to the proceedings.

I'm not sure if this is happened before, but I'm checking Fandango, and IMAX venues are either not showing Pacific Rim in realD, or only have two showings a day. Presumably, this is to strengthen IMAX 3D performance, but I find it interesting given that I mused about the possibility of future films only being released in 3D in combination with IMAX.

Non-IMAX venues have more realD showings, but it's still interesting. My local Regal megaplex has both full-size IMAX and RPX, and both their site and Fandango indicate that the RPX showings are 2D. Just two months ago, they showed IM3 in RPX 3D even though they also had it in IMAX 3D. And IMAX venues have been running MoS in both realD and IMAX 3D. Is PR's lack of realD at IMAX locations just some kind of strategy on the part of WB/IMAX, or a silent indication of awareness that given the option of IMAX, audiences will desert realD?

Even James Cameron himself weighed in on 3D last week - - They're doing it wrong!

Quote:
“I do not think Hollywood is using the 3D properly,” said Cameron, speaking to Children of Men director Alfonso Cuarón at Mexico City’s technology forum TagDF last week. "The reason I say that Hollywood is not doing well is because it is automatic.”

He explained, "[it's] one thing [to shoot] in 3-D and another to convert to 3-D,” adding that it's a matter of studios "[trying] to make money," "pushing 3-D to directors who are not comfortable or do not like 3-D.”

His examples for such films include two of the biggest releases of the summer: "Man of Steel, Iron Man 3 and all those movies should not necessarily be in 3-D. If you spend $150 million on visual effects, the film is already going to be spectacular, perfect.”

3D TV Is Dead

...and 3D theatrical films are also dead - - they're currently just chickens running around the barnyard with their heads cut off.

I'm surprised this sorry fad lasted as long as it did this time.

Quote:
The era of blood splatter on the screen and obnoxious cartoon characters throwing lollipops at your face may be over before as the TV industry's fascination with 3-D seems to finally be coming to an end.

Vizio's 2014 line of commercial televisions — the TVs marketed to regular folk like you and me — will not have any 3-D models, the company announced at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which currently underway in Las Vegas.) Vizio has abandoned the gimmick technology completely in favor of televisions with 4K high definition, the latest advancement in very pretty, but flat pictures.

While Vizio may not have the name recognition of a Panasonic, Samsung, or Sony, they're one of the most powerful names in home electronics, so their word matters, as the Verge explains:

"It's also a major blow to 3D in the living room; Vizio sells the most TVs of any company in the US. But Vizio is confident that consumers won't miss it; in fact, the decision was made because Vizio's current customers simply aren't viewing content in 3D often. In 2014, Vizio seems willing to sacrifice what some may consider a gimmick in pursuit of a better picture."

One company quitting 3-D does not kill the technology completely. But the death of 3-D TV has been percolating for about a year now, despite rising sales of devices. Most people bought 3-D TVs because most high-end televisions had the technology included, not because they wanted to watch something in 3D. After ESPN (one of the few networks to embrace the technology) essentially abandoned it due to lack of viewer interest, there's no major media companies pushing the medium forward.

Now the industry has caught up with the consumer's apathy. “We’ve stopped talking about them,” Steve Koenig, the director of industry analysis for the Consumer Electronics Association, told Variety before CES.

The origin of 3D's killer, the much-sleeker 4K high-definition picture, is a tale that involves movie picture buffs George Lucas and Ridley Scott. A 4K high definition picture has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the current high-definition standard (1080p) and about four times as many pixels, which sounds great, but there are some problems. 4K may not improve the picture for TVs under 50 inches, and right now there's little-to-no content available in 4K HD. YouTube streaming in 4K is about the only available option for normals, but again few of the videos being shot actually live up to that standard.

As many predicted after a year of Avatar. There are still movies each year that people like to watch in 3D like Life of Pi in 2012 and Gravity in 2013. But it won't work for each film and mostly it is used wrongly and makers don't try at all other than making more money out of it.

As I said before: The difference is whether the director or the studio want the movie to be in 3D...

I think it's mainly Asia that's driving 3D. Here in Germany only three of the ten biggest movies of 2013 were 3D... (USA/Canada it's 8 out of 10)

Oh boy, how the mighty have fallen...

AVENGERS: ENDGAME's 3D share is just 20 %...

Quote:
Avengers is strong from Maine to Maui. 3-D accounted for 20% of the take, while PLFs were 12% and IMAX 9%.
