Despicable Me 2
Despicable Me 2Quote: Despicable Me 2 is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated adventure comedy film and the sequel to the 2010 animated film Despicable Me. Produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures, both films are directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, and written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Steve Carell, Russell Brand, and Miranda Cosgrove reprise their roles. Kristen Wiig, who played Miss Hattie in the first film, voices agent Lucy Wilde. Ken Jeong, who played Talk Show Host, voices Floyd Eagle-san. Discuss!

About on par with the first (though I think 1 was better) but I think these movies are just good, nothing great. The minions are indeed amusing though, will be interesting to see how their movie goes.

Re: Despicable Me 2
The minions make this the funniest movie of the year. Of last year too. Hell, since Bridesmaids even. Wiig and Carrell have some great scenes too. I loved Carrell trying to get the AVL to arrest the kid and thrusting towards things in the wig store. But it's the minions that make the movie. They pop up every five minutes for a huge laugh, yet never feel overused. Every scene they are a part of is gold.
I loved the first movie for Gru's heartwarming emotion journey with the kids. The love story comes close to that level, but doesn't have quite as many "awwwww" moments. The comedy more than makes up for it though. I can't wait to see this again, which I couldn't say about the first movie, as great as it was. Therefore I declare Despicable Me 2 superior and give it an A.

Re: Despicable Me 2
How useless are the other two kids though? The one who's into the villan's son and the other who the only scene that comes to mind is her breaking a pinata.
I didn't really like the Kristen Wiig love interest either.

You know what's crazy?
The critics cicle that I am part of is just insanely into Despicable Me 2. It's their best-rated movie of the year so far (with some of the harshest critics, who usually like around 10-15 movies a year) giving it a perfect grade and almost everyone has this well above Monsters University. I liked DM2 and yet I ended up giving it the lowest grade out of the entire group.

I should invent something like that. The forumula doesn't seem all that complicated, really. Little, cute-ish creatures behaving weirdly...

Re: Despicable Me 2
Other recent movies have tried and failed to create a beloved character or characters utilizing such a formula. See: the elves in Rise of the Guardians, the fish sidekick (named Minion!) in Megamind.
Rise of the Guardians' elves in particular play as charmless Minions.

Not as original as the first film but cute and funny. And god those minions are to die for. The "I Swear" performance at the end? Dead. B

Didn't like it all that much. There were a couple funny scenes, but overall...eh. I'd even say it's the weakest of the major animated films so far this year... C+.

Agree with this, after thinking about it, I believe I underestimated The Croods which is a better film, I would put Despicable Me 2 on par with Epic Now my hopes are on Frozen, I expect it to deliver a Tangled quality C+

Some good jokes, otherwise very bland.

Re: Despicable Me 2
Enjoyed this, though not as much as the first. But it still had some very funny moments, even outside of the Minions (which I think is an underrated aspect of this series, the jokes OUTSIDE of the minions)
My favorite sequence was Gru trying to convince the AVL that El Macho was the bad guy and his son was the mastermind.

Re: Despicable Me 2
Despicable Me 2’s box-office success is built on the popularity of the manic Minions, but one would be misled to believe they’re the only reason for success. Gru is as important a creation. For he is a character who’s heart and emotional journey matters, enough to root for him and in turn make the plot matter. The Despicable Me films avoid feeling as if the plot is only there to service Minions.
While the original film’s plot pulls on the heartstrings more (I actually cried during the first film, admittedly), the lighter Gru-Lucy relationship plot here is a lot of fun and energy filled. Kristen Wiig is the perfect fit for Lucy, while Steve Carell once again does great voice work. If any voice actor deserved Oscar consideration, Carell as Gru would be near the top of the list. The spy plot and setting in the mall is effective, adding a whodunnit element to the film and giving its plot a clear direction. Between that and Lucy, the writers made some great decisions conceptually with the second film.
The villain not to spoil his identity, is a downgrade from Vector. Vector feels more powerful and threatening, not to mention carries more screentime. I also felt the absence of Dr. Nefario for so long hurts the film, with Russell Brand’s great portrayal of him. The Agnes, Edith and Margo characters are fine, but are placeholders compared to the first film.
Of course, the Minions are the comic centerpiece of the film and highlight. They’re a twisted work of genius. Interestingly considering little, crazy creatures has been tried in other animated films, to usually dull results. Perhaps a reason for their success is they’re intelligent creatures with a language, if impossible for us to understand. They’re more crazy adult than clumsy kids, while most small animated creatures fall into the latter category. This may be a reason why they remain fresh.
The Despicable Me films are excellent. They both provide great comic energy via the Minions, while also providing a main character and plot that is compelling and matters. Hard to ask for more.

If I had to choose, I would put Gru's character over the minions, I like him better,, just saying

Re: Despicable Me 2
As a family movie and entertainment it works wonders and from an entertainment point of view it blows away MU. But if your expecting some heavy story like a Pixar film this is not and MU is better there. This is a very juvenile hilarious film with many simplistic but immensely hilarious scenes. It is pretty much like Shrek 2, a film that was a bit aimless but you were literally dieing of laughter in many scenes. I think I was ROFL with my 17 year old cousin and my 12 year old cousin 3-5 times during the film as I watched it Today at home. Pretty much if you want to know what kind of humour to expect it goes like this. My Name is Felix RamsBottom! Minions: Bottom.. HAHAHAHAHAH To be honest for a kids film there are some rather edgy jokes but it works really well.

Despicable Me 2
I hadn't seen Despicable Me, but I went to see this regardless, and it was very enjoyable with a lot of laughs (coming mainly from the minions). The animation is sublime. I now want to see the first one. I saw Steve Coogan's name go up at the beginning and I couldn't hear his voice throughout the film, though.

This is a very good sequel, much more satisfying an experience than MU was the same summer, though MU is technically a better film when you don't compare to the predecessor.
