BOG Twitter:
Fewer people went for 3D conversion on #IronMan3. 3D share dropped from 52% on Avengers to 45% for IM3

The conversion in Star Trek into Darkness is nice.

A guy from comingsoon i think says it's shit. He pretty much hated the movie, though (4/10).

45% share is still good after a constant decline

 Re: The 3D thread
I only went with 3D so I could see it in one of those premium floor-to-ceiling theaters and hear it in Dolby Atmos. But I wore my 2D Glasses, so technically, I didn't actually see it *in 3D.*
The extra-bright projection mostly compensated for the darkening effect of the glasses, especially at my Cinemark XD screening yesterday. I feel certain that I'll never go to another non-XD/RPX/ETX 3D screening.

I expect lower shares for Thor and Captain America. Captain America's 3D share was 40%, so it's hard to imagine it could get much lower than that lol.

There is a surprisingly large proportion of 2D screenings in my market for this type of blockbuster - - I think the tide is finally beginning to turn on the 3D scam.

 Re: The 3D thread
Despite a years long hard sell by the industry, the 3D craze is finally beginning to peter out... 3D TV Market Suffers Another Blow As ESPN 3D Shuts DownGone too, seems to be any real effort to shoot feature movies in native 3D like Avatar. Even this summer's highest profile blockbusters (eg: STiD, IM3, MoS, Pacific Rim) were just sent to the shop for conversion after completion. At least, producers have stopped pretending 3D has anything to do with the art of making movies - - the pretense has been dropped, and everyone knows 3D is simply a cash grab now.

 Re: The 3D thread
3D reached a new low last weekend, BTW. Monsters University's share was 31% (lowest ever for an animated flick) and WWZ's 34% (lowest ever for an action-heavy film). Thing is, this means shit because shares are still pretty large overseas.

 Re: The 3D thread
I predict that by 2016, American megaplexes will mostly only have 3D screenings in the IMAX or premium auditoriums, smaller multiplexes will drop 3D altogether or only have it for one big film on OW, and some converted films won't even get 3D releases in North America.
Native 3D stuff like the ever-promised Avatar sequels will likely have more 3D screenings, though perhaps animation will also end up having more limited 3D release in North America than in the rest of the world.

 Re: The 3D thread
I don't mind 3D. There are several films that don't need it that have it, but there are some films where it is used very well and adds to the movie-going experience. I really don't like how virtually every animated film is now in 3D though. What a waste. The only animated films I've seen in 3D where I thought it actually added to the experience were How To Train Your Dragon and Epic. The former being awesome and the latter being okay only because of the look of the film. But for films like Pacific Rim, Thor: The Dark World and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, I will see them in 3D for sure.
I think 3D is best used in a limited way, maybe 5 films a year, rather than the saturation level it's at now.

 Re: The 3D thread
Agree on all points, except I can't get into 3D at all, even native 3D. There often seems to be too much depth, when the camera focuses on objects in the distance they look like they're close up and really small, and the "canvas" feels smaller. I actually feel more immersed by 2D than by 3D.
For an example of my predicted future of 3D, I wouldn't be surprised if, say, Ice Age 5 were released in 3D overseas but only in 2D in North America. Or it would only have one 3D screen per megaplex, in one of those extra bright premium "experiences", and would be showing in 2D only by the third weekend.

3D hit a new low this weekend, accounting for only 27% of Despicable Me 2's gross.
It seems likely we'll see a sub 20% share next year, probably with The Good Dinosaur.

It seems likely we'll see a sub 20% share next year, probably with The Good Dinosaur. Considering DM1's 3D share was 45%, this means the average ticket price for DM2 was actually probably lower than the original, which makes its increase all the more insanely impressive.

 Re: The 3D thread
This is why I made that prediction earlier. Audiences (and particularly families) in the U.S./Canada definitely seem to be turning away from 3D, and I would not be at all shocked if a couple years down the road, something like Smurfs 3 or the WWZ sequel only gets a 3D release in countries like Germany, Russia and China where 3D is still huge (that is, if the market doesn't collapse there too).
However, I do see IMAX 3D hanging on longer - I can envision something like Avengers 2 or Man of Steel 2 or Star Trek 3 having a North American release in IMAX 3D but not realD.

 Re: The 3D thread
The 3D figure for Despicable Me 2 is awful. With the really-low 3D shares it and Monsters University had, I wonder how much longer it will be until studios cease to release animated films in 3D without a second thought. It made sense when the craze was, well, a craze; but now, it's just programming for significantly emptier auditoriums.

 Re: The 3D thread
I was out at the theatre today seeing TLR & WHD and I had a peek into the various theatres showing MU & DM2 - - the 2D screenings were packed, while the 3D screenings were only half filled with parents subjecting their children to dark-o-vision. The end of this scourge is in sight.

It's telling that this thread is located in the "Box Office Bash" forum rather than "Cinemania", because 3D was never about the art and always about the money.

Umm... yeah. Obviously.
Mainly because most filmmakers don't use it to enhance a movie. Some do.
