I've skipped through this entire thread for fear of spoilers. I wanna see it today though, and I got two questions. 1) Is the 3D worth it/not horrible? The lighting seems pretty dark as is. 2) Is there anything after the credits?

3D is definitely not worth it. Nothing pops out, it essentially looks like a darker 2-D.

A random bit of praise for this film: the arc of the Christopher Meloni character is a far more successful version of what The (not so) Amazing Spider-Man tried and failed to do with Denis Leary's Captain Stacy.

Could be for us, who are grown up guys and grew up with those films; however, for a new generation of fans, those well made movies might look odd and very outdated, though I love all 3 films, nothing to be alarmed there!

Superman 2 really isn't flawed, outside of the final 5 minutes.

Mos doesn't have flaws though. You can just tell some scenes were very edited (interrogation room scene & transition to the desert, for example) while other scenes ("YOU ARE NOT ALONE") were fully in tact.

I would bet there is a director cut which is a good 20 minutes longer which adds a lot to the film. But that said, MOS as is is an extremely strong movie.

TBH, MOS 2 is in a great position. The first one is a major hit and quite beloved, but at the same time, there is a lot of room for improvement.

Superman II is completely flawed (It has WB trying to fill in the gaps of an already mostly shot and superior film, with none of the creative force back) But it is still my favorite Superman film. The first film the effects hold up well, II ok for the most part, but you can tell when Lester and Co. took over. III and IV stopped trying to increase the effects so they don't hold up at all, but there are occasionally some still cool things.

Post Re: Man of Steel
On to my review. There are spoilers, so you've been warned. FInally got a chance to see it. I really enjoyed it. It had some pacing issues, and personally the battle for Metropolis is more in vein with what Donner originally conceived. I will get more into that later. I really liked that a lot of the film kind of plays with the mechanics of the character. It really made the film feel like I was watching an entirely different kind of Superman film despite splicing the plot of the first two films.

To Krypton. I must say outside of this time, I don't think Snyder had much control in anything. It feels nothing like a film of his, and that's a good thing. However, there is a moment right in the beginning where Crowe screams "this is Madness," and I thought Shannon was going to reply "THIS IS KRYPTON!" Crowe is awesome, the mother is kind of lame as is the rest of the kryptonians. And I'll admit I had no idea what the hell was going on, so I'm happy it got explained later on. It's a very good sequence, and sets up everything nicely. But it is a little long. It's a lot like Thor's beginning.

Young Clark. This is all great stuff, and Lane and Costner really bring out the Kents who had previously been rather generic characters. The flashbacks are a little clunky, but I agree that it works when you look how the different scenes are connected somehow. The graveyard scene works so much more because of the reveal. Lois being the hard nosed journalist is completely taken back, and is effected for the rest of the film because of it. These moments in their briefness are more powerful than anything in the Nolan Batman films (And it's not a jab, those films just don't go for the emotions that much.) I also find it refreshing not to have the bumbling Clark Kent we're so used to.

Superman. I mean it's hard to compare them. He's no Reeve (But Reeve's natural charm was a staple for those films, and a very different kind of Superman) but better than Routh because Cavill is trying to be different. And overall succeeds outside of a few clunky moments. His scene in the interrogation room is very Reeve esque, and I wish he had more opportunities to be like that the rest of the film. But he's fine in the rest. Adams, Meloni, Crowe, and the villains are all solid. The moment when Meloni accepts Superman is great. I'm not sure why people say he's not saving people. He saves so many people throughout the film. Shannon really makes Zod a much more interesting villain then we are used to. Superman choosing the planet he never asked to be apart of over his own kind is extremely touching at the end. (People say why didn't he do that earlier, well why didn't the chick or Shannon do it to Supes. They actually didn't want to kill him, or him kill them) It's an interesting dynamic for a Superman that over the course of a few weeks learns what he is, he has the opportunity to save his entire planet, but Earth will be lost, and he must finally chose the man he wants to be. I agree with the stupidity of the script though (Try another planet, you have a dam atmosphere machine)

The Battle. It is pretty great, there is a lot of destruction, but come on. I don't think those buildings had anyone in them. When a news building finally chooses to completely evacuate their building, you better believe the others were evacuated long before that. Supes should have flown away to the forrest obviously, but it's a guy that has never fought before. In fact he has spent his whole life not harming other people (Why the bar scene is awesome) All he knows is to punch and tackle. In this respect, while it's a more realistic interpretation of what a fight like this would be like, Superman II's battle of Metropolis is still far more entertaining because they do different things. It should have had more of Zod learning his powers along the way like with his eyes (Needed some cold breath! and other ways to break up the punches. Should have done some of the fight underwater, something else, anything else at times) Definitely needed some editing to it, but it is still pretty fantastic to just finally see Superman in today's effects taking advantage of it.

I personally liked the way it ended too. It goes against the stereotype as to why Lois can't see anything. It honestly does nothing to it. Whether she knows, or doesn't know Lois Lane or Mary Jane or Pepper is always going to need saving in every film. Though I will say that the part at the end is stupid though. "You're trying to see where I take my cape off" "You could get anti America someday" "Come on Son, I'm from Kansas" To which the colonel should have replied.

But it sets up a sequel very well, adding a new dynamic to the story we know so well. And I'm looking forward to it.

Solid A for me. It has issues, and the flaws can be driven through. But I haven't seen a Summer film without all kinds of ways that it can be torn apart in a very long time. Well done WB.

And my list.

Superman II/ Superman the Movie- A+
Man of Steel- A
Superman Returns A-
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace C-
Superman III D
Supergirl F

I enjoyed it and would give an A-. I thought it was a fun movie, and really loved the first half of the film. The second half was still good, and i overall enjoyed Zod as a villain. I found him more evil and more complicated than than the Stamp one (really he was nothing more than a cartoonish villain). I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the sequel.

But man, she was so dam gorgeous. The film had potential, originally Reeve was supposed to have a sizable role in it with him getting trapped in the phantom zone, and originally helping her, then she has to save him. Then I think he broke his leg or something and the Salkinds just fucked the series again.

Just needed to clean up the screenplay. The big-picture idea of the film is there but the small details are missing. And also, really shouldn't of had Lois Lane. As great as Adams is, that character is forced. If they really needed a romantic interest, they should of pulled a Rachel Dawes and had the female lead by Lana Lang.

I totally disagree with this part.

Firstly, it is romantic chemistry 101. Lois Lane's confident, friendly, outgoing personality is the total contrast to Clark. It makes him love her. At the same time, SUPERMAN is the perfect counter for Lois. Superman should NEVER have a love interest other than Lois Lane. Young Clark pre Superman can do Lana, but once Superman's out, it has to be Lois.

In MOS, it is a critical piece of the story. It is another thing which fees heavily edited. Lois Lane being hot on Kal-el's heels & the whole situation with that was one of the more interesting sub plots, IMO. The fact that she easily figures out who he is almost instantly makes the film that much smarter than every other Superman film. I also found the way she opts to keep it a secret when she realizes Jonathan Kent let himself die to not reveal Kal's secret quite touching.

That is a somewhat frustrating thing though. The idea of "Jonathan Kent letting himself die - by telling Clark to NOT save him - so he can keep his secret" is a new and powerful idea for Superman on film. Clark seeming totally sold on it - "trusting his Fathers judgement" - as he puts it adds another degree of maturity to the story. Lois identifying with those feelings and making a personal, moral decision to not expose Clark - even when the FBI wants to know who he is - does, in a way, establish a very powerful bond between the two, but it doesn't feel like it has QUITE the same impact which should have.

The exchange in the desert before Faora comes may be short, but it is the finest moment between the two in the film. It is something like:

Superman: Thank you.
Lois Lane: For what?
Superman: For believing in me. (not running the Kal-el story out of respect and trust for him)
Lois Lane: In the end it didn't mean much.
Superman: It did for me.
*Supes perfectly displays a nervousness/uneasiness at what is about to happen, lack of confident semi scares Lois*
*stare at each other, Lois strangely touched by this remark*
*aliens coming*
Supes: You should go.
*Lois, always wanting to be in the middle of eveything, doesn't move*
Supes: GO Lois....
*She finally goes*

I feel like, as an idea, that whole subplot should have set up a very potent connection between them for the rest of the film. Lois as a character doesn't feel forced whatsoever. What happens is after that, the Kal-el and Lois story line kind of takes the backseat.

Goyer is easily the biggest issue here. Snyder directs the hell of what is at times a weak script (though it is also brilliant at others). I think with a rewrite in a few areas, this could have been best picture quality. Costner, with more screen time, could have challenged bSA.

Not arguing about her beauty, but the film itself is a joke, so sad Reeve couldnt be there 'cause it would have made the movie a bit more appealing and interesting, imo

Magnus is absolutely correct here.

It's amazing how much Excel is reading into this movie. No wonder he believes it's great - - he's turning it into the perfect film inside his head.

We should all be so lucky to be so bewitched by every movie!

Mm-hmm. I'm a little shocked that a number of people online are saying Snyder's the problem here. He's not. It's the script that creates just about every issue in the film.
