This is a mixed bag, but I think Romero still created a movie worthy of his name. I didn't quite buy the "smart zombies" concept. I guess, I am just not used to seeing zombies using firearms in a movie. The gore was over-the-top and I certainly enjoyed that. The social commentary could have been more subtle, but it was well woven with the story, so I didn't mind.
The movie on the whole was fun, but it was not scary whatsoever. Then again, I have never considered a zombie movie to be scary anyway, so I wasn't surprised in that aspect. The film contained a bit more action that I thought, but less of "classic zombie" moments than I hoped for. It's slightly worse than the Dawn of the Dead remake, in my opinion, but it is still a good movie for what it is with some especially brilliant scenes like the zombies escaping the water and attacking Fiddler's Green as well as zombies not reacting to the fireworks anymore. Dennis Hopper was his usual baddie and I liked how he ended in the movie. Leguziamo was probably my favorite character of all.

LAND OF THE DEAD - 7/10 (B-)
It was good, but not great. Kind of disappointing. Simon Baker was pretty sexy though, and Asia Argento was cool. I totally don't get why that big fat guy knocked out that one woman who was with them. I felt bad for her. And I also felt bad for the guy who got bit that Asia's character shot. I don't think it would have hurt her to give him one more minute to live. He was like, "No, no" when she was going to shoot him, she didn't even give him a chance to say any last words. I thought that was mean. I liked her character and thought she was cool, but she lost some cool points there.

It was a good movie. It had a lot of gore and action, and it didn't drag. It's nothing groundbreaking, but if you take it for what it is than it is quite enjoyable. Not the best zombie movie ever made, but far from terrible. I had a lot of fun with this film.

God what a terrible movie... The acting was shitty. Some of the kills the zombies did were so damn stupid and really killed the movie. The ending seemed like they were celebrating the 4th of July and they let the zombies live because they are looking for a place to stay like them?! WTF what if they go where the humans go!!!! Its fucking possible!!!

Okay 2/10 for Land of the Dead and 9/10 for Jarhead - just the opposite of my ratings! This is perfect, whenever you love a movie, I'll know to stay far away, and I hope you'll be able to use my reviews for the same service!

It has some great moments, but also some really crappy ones. It really is a mixed bag. Parts were ingenious in their satire and commentary, but others were just silly and stupid. The 'evolving' zombies didn't really bug me, and I liked the whole concept of Fiddler's Green. But the characters are one-dimensional, the acting is mediocre, and the action scenes are okay but not thrilling. Overall, a decent flick.

I think the best parts of zombie movies are when the people first discover them... there is much more potential for scares and excitiment at that part of the movie. This movie starts off with them already being a known factor and humans hunkered down in a large metropolis, which I don't think worked that well. Land of the Dead felt more like a so-so action flick with a couple minor jumps, as opposed to what a zombie movie should be... scary.
You really could have taken the zombies out of the equation altogether and just made it a post-apocolyptic setting instead. Anyhow, I guess I like to have my undead movies being more about the undead and less about Dennis Hopper vs. John Leguziamo vs. that other guy... and I really didn't care about any of them. Also the end was anti-climatic, and the whole thing where the one good guy didn't want to shoot the zombies at the end because "they're just looking for a place to live like us", I was like WTF?!?! They're trying to eat you people!!!
As an action flick, it is average. As a horror flick, it was a failure... so, if you go in expecting action over horror, you may not be too disappointed. I'd go with a C-

After the somewhat Renaissance of Zombie movies return I would rank them like this.
28 Days Later- B+
Resident Evil- C-
Resident Evil 2- Havent Seen
Dawn of the Dead- A+
Shaun of the Dead-A+
Land of the Dead- A-
I would say that the acting is pretty horrible by the leads, But Romero's Zombies are just as cool as ever, though if somewhat more unbelievable. The only acting that was decent was by Hopper and Liguizamo. Its not scary, a couple of jumping moments, so its much different then what Romero's zombie movies were all about. Zombies these days are about style, not fear, and I dug the style.
A- or 7/10

Huh-wuh-wah? He invented the zombie movie as it's known today, and tried to finance this film for years. Why would he need to cash in on it?

Land of the Dead
Well it's a trashy film. It's not a horror movie, more of a low-budget action flick made by Robert Rodriguez. I liked how when someone turned into a zombie, they were instantly disposed of (shot in the fucking head), no sentimentality. But other than that, it was pretty crap. I mean, that black zombie, lol, he was more clever than most of the humans! It was silly. He learned how to fire a gun, start fires, swim, and manage his team of zombies to knock down walls, smash windows and he even teaches a fellow zombie how to fire a gun. Oh come on, fucking ridiculous. This movie is a damn comedy.
Oh, and "sky flowers"? LOL. When did they stop calling them fireworks?

B-I wasn't expecting much when I first saw it, but "Land" really surprised me. Loved the gore, and Dennis Hopper is a great villain. Oh come on, fucking ridiculous. Yes, it is a bit out there - but, if you've seen the original Day of the Dead, the scientist in that film was training Bub to do daily things humans do. Bub was basically the scientist's pet, and he ended up leading his "pack" of zombies against Captain Rhodes.

 Re: Land of the Dead
Ah I see.
I've seen the first two, but then I skipped the third, and I haven't seen the next two (Diary and Survival) either.
The best of all of them is Dawn of the Dead, and then comes the remake of that film, which eclipses them all again.

The writing is lazy & cliched, plus the acting is pretty bad as well. Unless you're a diehard Romero fan, I say pass on it. I haven't even attempted Survival, which I heard is worse.
