It's nothing new but I thought it was a well-shot, very suspenseful thriller. Great performances from Katie Aselton (who also directed from a script by husband Mark Duplass) and Lake Bell. Enjoyed this one a lot.

8/10 (B+)

Boring and predictable. I was hoping for some sort of weirdness emanating from the strained relationship between the females that resulted in one of them going insane and hunting the others. But no. Just some crazy PTSD types, rape, and women beating (directed by a female!).

On the plus side, it was short. Go to island, pointless arguing, rape attempt, fleeing, kill psychos. Tight.

Could have used better lighting in a certain scene for Lake Bell viewing. Was not plot critical.

This is a minor, but anxious and interesting gender-politics variation on Deliverance. The development of the trio of female characters is convincing; their fractured friendship and secondhand intimacy in conversation rings true. The three men, on the other hand, are very broadly drawn as macho bruisers, volatile veterans of the Iraq War, with predictable hillbilly overtones defining the one who emerges as the main antagonist. This is a rare genre film one could describe as misandrist and perhaps not be unfounded. Still, though, the experiment (capturing how nervous and unsafe women can be in the presence of clearly stronger men, pushing the war of the sexes to a brutal extreme, and then turning the entire dynamic on its head) proves worthy, and the creeping-through-the-forest, every-noise-a-threat suspense often reaches a wrenching pitch.
