Iron Man 3's is falling heavier with Star Trek 2 out. Star Trek 2 is looking really good ahead of next week's drop date. Good increase for The Call but none of the openers did well. The Call is scoring great with audiences, however, with 100% approval. Conversely, The Last Exorcism holds just a 4% rating but has only half of The Call's screens. Snitch is doing pretty awful. It will be The Rock's lowest opener in 8 years. Even though Trance is doing a tailspin this weekend, it had a very good opening weekend so its performance isn't too shabby.

Iron Man 3 saw a bigger drop with Star Trek 2 unloading Friday. If it makes that estimate, it will still be ahead of The Avengers' 3rd weekend by $20,000. Yes, The Avengers will start gaining ground week-to-week next weekend but it does not matter since Iron Man 3 will pass it next weekend. Iron Man 3 has had one hell of a run. 13m will happen. Star Trek 2 had very strong sneaks. This is a good sign for next weekend when it opens. WOM is at a ROBUST 83% (Veep, anyone?). Next Friday is also a holiday so if WOM continues in a similar fashion, Star Trek 2 could do some damage. The Call was the biggest opener but it had more screens than the rest of the newbies. This is nothing home to write about. The Last Exorcism 2 looks to barely nudge by Snitch despite losing the admissions battle. WOM for The Last Exorcism 2 is deplorable. It sits at only 3.85%, one of the worst approval ratings for a major movie this year. Last Exorcism 2 had its best day on Saturday and its worst day on Sunday. Its Thursday-Saturday bump was only 18% but its Sunday decrease from Saturday was a whopping 30%. Ponder on that. Meanwhile, Snitch fared worse than TLE2 because it was playing in more screens. Overall, Snitch will be The Rock's lowest opener in 8 years.

Next week's predictions

1. Star Trek 2 - 1.5m
2. The Great Gatsby - $650,000
3. Iron Man 3 - $450,000 (-59%)

Star Trek 2 looks poised to break out with the holiday providing perfect cover. Who said anything about it not doing well in Asia?

May 9 Weekend Actuals

1. Iron Man 3 - $11,943,316
2. Star Trek Into Darkness - $261,541 (sneak previews actual)
3. The Call - $144,298 (opening weekend actual)
4. Snitch - $68,284 (opening weekend actual)
5. The Last Exorcism 2 - $63,130 (opening weekend actual)

Other totals
Trance - $420,013
The Big Wedding - $270,560
Platinum Data - $113,377
Promised Land - $41,228 (opening weekend actual)

Great for Iron Man 3 but HUGE advanced screenings for Star Trek 2. With those previews, this will break 3m for sure. I'm going to revise my predictions for the upcoming weekend as well.

1. Star Trek 2 - $1.9m
2. The Great Gatsby - $700,000 (some interest plus the holiday will bump up numbers)
3. Iron Man 3 - $450,000 (would fall harder but has the holiday to help it)

Early Friday pre-sales show Iron Man 3 surprisingly out in front in a couple of places. Star Trek 2 remains the frontrunner at most locations and The Great Gatsby is behind both at most theaters. Gatsby is tracking very well in the business district though.

Slow start for Star Trek 2 and The Great Gatsby. Admissions will pick up heavily with Friday being a holiday. Iron Man 3 held up alright. Pee Mak Phra Khanong had sneaks earlier this week and so far it has been warmly received. This Thai horror might be able to slice out a smaller audience amidst the trio of Star Trek 2-Great Gatsby-Iron Man 3. Excellent hold for The Call. WOM is outstanding for the thriller. Very weak for The Berlin File. Last Exorcism 2 got sawed by the new openers and extremely poor WOM. Terrible for Snitch. It won't survive next weekend.

Slightly underwhelming for Star Trek 2. Maybe gross will paint a different story. Good hold for Iron Man 3. Decent for The Great Gatsby. Excellent for The Call. This is getting huge WOM. Not bad for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. After a rocky start, The Berlin File came back with shocking walk-ins. Walk-ins attributed 89% of Berlin File's Thursday. Pretty great for The Big Wedding. Good for Searching for Sugar Man. Trance has lost a lot of sales after opening weekend. The Last Exorcism 2 is spiraling downwards after bad WOM seeping through.

I really don't like that Thursday actual for Star Trek 2 but then again, it is doing way better than Star Trek. Iron Man 3 is holding on pretty tight. About what I expected for The Great Gatsby. People were expecting this to challenge Star Trek 2? I think they got caught up in the buzz. Good for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Another hit for a Thai horror. Awesome for The Call. It's going to increase this weekend.

Outstanding for Iron Man 3. It passed The Avengers today. Can it make another 1m this weekend? Quite good for Star Trek 2. Obviously it won't sniff the outskirts of my most recent prediction but it should be around 1.225m (including sneaks). That would be 95.5% of Star Trek 2's total and an increase of 170% of Star Trek's OW. It has Iron Man 3 levels of WOM so far. The Great Gatsby benefited from the holiday with the long duration. Amazing for The Call. Great for Pee Mak Phra Khanong.

Iron Man 3 passes The Avengers at the same point of its run? or it passes The Avengers' total?

If it's the latter, then wow. In such a short time. Amazing.

Total. It's been ahead of The Avengers since opening weekend. Next up is Titanic for #2 all-time.

I wonder what is adjusted for inflation #1?

Interesting question. To answer that, I would need Hong Kong's inflation data. Unfortunately I don't have them handy. But I could venture a guess by using BOM's avg ticket price table for inflation adjustment purpose.

#1 Titanic (1997) HK$215M
#2 Avatar (2009) HK$178M
#3 Jurassic Park (1993) HK$115M
#4 Jackie Chan's "Rumble in the Bronx" (1995) HK$104M
#5 Jackie Chan's "Police Story 4: First Strike" (1996) HK$103M
#6 Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1997) HK$101M
#7 Chow Yun Fat's "God of Gamblers Return" (1994) HK$100M
#8 The Avengers (2012) HK$97M
#9 Stephen Chow's "Justice, My Foot!" (1992) HK$95M
#10 Stephen Chow and all-star ensemble cast "All's Well, Ends Well" (1992) HK$94M
#11 Toy Story 3 (2010) HK$89M
#12 Independence Day (1996) HK$89M
#13 Speed (1994) HK$88M
#14 Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) HK$85M
#15 Jackie Chan's "Thunderbolt" (1995) HK$83M
#16 Stephen Chow's "Back to School" (1991) HK$83M
#17 The Dark Knight Rises (2012) HK$80M
#18 Jackie Chan's "Mr. Nice Guy" (1997) HK$79M
#19 Stephen Chow's "Royal Tramp" (1992) HK$78M
#20 Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master II" (1994) HK$78M
#21 Stephen Chow's "All for the Winner" (1990) HK$78M
#22 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) HK$77M
#23 Stephen Chow's "Flirting Scholar" (1993) HK$77M
#24 Stephen Chow and Andy Lau "God of Gamblers 2" (1990) $75M
#25 John Woo directing, Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung "A Better Tomorrow" (1986) HK$74M

Lots of Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan!

I'm surprised Enter the Dragon[i] and [i]Infernal Affairs aren't there. But it's pretty great seeing Chan in there so many times!

"Enter the Dragon" was the #3 grosser for 1973, behind local comedy "The House of 72 Tenants" and "Poseidon". It made HK$$3,307,520, adjusted to about HK$15M today.

"Infernal Affairs" is #26 on the all-time chart, trailing "A Better Tomorrow" by less than HK$1M.

Ok. Well, that's great to know the numbers for Enter the Dragon. Do you have numbers for all movies that far back? I'm interested in knowing the grosses for Stallone movies if you have time.

I get my numbers here: http://www.angelfire.com/home/bobic/HK_Movies/main.htm. The list is in Chinese.

Which Stallone films are you looking?
