Not only is it a courageous decision for a number of reasons, the fact that Jolie is such an immediately recognizable figure instantly puts breast cancer awareness on the map. You never know, some women could be compelled to go have themselves checked out just because of Jolie's op-ed.
I'm also amazed she managed to keep it under wraps considering she's like the most famous actress in the world.

So her options were: Dramatically reduce her risk of getting cancer by doing this procedure, Don't do the procedure and just hope she doesn't get cancer despite the percentages, or Eventually get cancer and have to fight it and eventually lose.
