Everyone acting like they expected a 50+ Million opener here is kidding themselves. Even I didn't expect that and I'm a die-hard Baz fan.

I always expected a $30+ mil opening. And I was REALLY hoping for $40+ mil.

$50 mil would ASTOUND me.

Somewhat likely after opening weekend but 100 million is locked and more like 130 million

This is so arbitrary and juvenile, ha, but reserving this "MOTHER OF GOD" designation for films such as The Avengers and The Hunger Games undermines the excitement the words imply. The Great Gatsby is a two-and-a-half hour romantic drama. A period film, too. It will never compete on the same level as films produced in part to sell toys and generate sequels. So "MOTHER OF GOD" needs a sliding scale based on each film's potential.

Gatsby is doing really well in downtown and Urban theaters
IM3 looks alright as evenings shows are filling up for it but I imagine Saturday will be its big day again.

Feel like my area either underestimated Gatsby or are just trying orcing people to see it in 3D. My local theater is adding 2D showtimes since it was originally playing on 1 screen. Leaving in a little to go watch it.

This is surprising for me. I thought that Peeples would be doing better there.

Are people finally fed up with Tyler Perry comedies? They release about 3 per year, so maybe.

Nope. It's probably that it's not actually a Tyler Perry film based on one of his hit plays. It's just a movie with his name slapped on as presenter.

Peeples failed to sell out even one showtime here, which is surprising since I'm in an urban area.

Gatsby on the other hand is HUGE. It is even selling out 3D showings and the last time I remember seeing sell outs for a 3D movie was Avatar, unless I am forgetting something.

Yeah post-2008 Leo has been on fire. Shutte Island, Inception, Django, and Gatsby all doing big business

J Edgar was a bump but that film really did look shit and he was wearing that silly makeup.

Wolf of Wall Street has big potential.

j edgar had zero promotion and a small release as well.

leos the biggest star in the world...

plus everyone knows 'daisy' to him is giselle...plenty of real world inspiration for him.

The 3D ones never sell out here.

Yeah, I thought I made that pretty clear but whatever. The Avengers didn't sell out in 3D here.

Saw an 8:30 showing of Gatsby. Only trailers were Man of Steel, Now You See Me and Before Midnight. The employee at the Arclight introducing the movie gave a $10 gift card to whoever wanted to answer the question "What films are in Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy?", ugh, could've got that but I didn't raise my hand fast enough. It was pretty much sold out, I didn't see any empty seats. Was annoyed at the people arriving 2 minutes into the movie and disrupting everyone. Audience reaction after the film was non-existent.
