Where's the retirement talk coming from? Because of the clean slate? He says "I am Iron Man" at the end and, post credits, it says "Iron Man will return." He's obviously not done.

Indeed, I got the impression that they were taking a break from Iron Man/ waiting for the next avengers to be released before going into production for IM4.

Downey has no contract, so that will be the problem. He said in an article recently that he doesn't want to play Iron Man too much longer which has made people wonder what will happen. I am sure they can give him a pile of money for Avengers 2. We shall see what happens after that.

 Re: Iron Man 3
I liked it a lot, but I didn't love it. It's a lot of fun and MUCH better than IM2, but I still prefer the first movie and TA to this. There are some fantastic action set pieces and Kingsley was great, but I still love the first IM and even though Downey OWNS the role it's becoming quite obvious he could pretty much sleep walk through the whole thing by now. The novelty is definitely wearing off a bit IMO.
I didn't think all of the jokes were that funny and the humor does seem forced down our throats at times, but it's still very well written for the most part thanks to the brilliant Shane Black

Downey will, for sure, be playing Tony Stark in Iron Man 4, 5 and 6. The only difference being that he gets paid double what he got for Iron Man 3. No worries.

A-
It was really fun, very funny, and had great action.
My only minor complaint... not enough emotion in the scene where Pepper falls.

See, if he didnt retire, the thing is just a cheap trick. He blew up all the suits in front of Pepper - clearly the point was he was moving on. I was surprised at how poorly the whole thing was handled, personally. Totally random and out of left field.

 Re: Iron Man 3
Interesting...
Crowd reaction from non marvel fans is pretty solid to this
I think it was a very fun and entertaining film and was more a typical summer film that provides good laughs and great action...
Story was a weak point but after Tony's house gets attacked the film really picks it up with the serious factor, action and especially the comedy...
There are some really funny scenes and its a big step up from Iron Man 2 so that is why I think people have been easily amused by this film.
The credits were really cool and fun though.
8/10

Those were all of his older models and prototypes which were kind of obsolete in most of the fight. Which is why he needed to wait for the other dungeon thing to be uncovered from the rubble. All he wanted was to give Pepper fireworks and he would start building new suits for the new year. If anything it adds to his narcissistic attitude of money and technology means nothing to him, Pepper is what matters to him. HIm getting his shrapnel out meant he can sleep again, not be as obsessed with work, etc. Now he can be in control of Iron Man, not Iron Man controlling his life.

 Re: Iron Man 3
I just didn't interpret it that way. The film established that Pepper hates the suits, clearly has a problem with the Iron Man side of Tony, and ti nearly gets her killed.
Destroying his mansion, self destructing all his suits, throwing his heart piece into the ocean? I get that it was new years and all, but I must have missed the part eh said/it was insinuated that he would just start building new suits.
If I didn't know Avengers 2 was being made, or if it had not said TONY STARK WILL RETURN...I would have assumed it was an ending akin to THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, where we see the character basically throw away everything he has spent the franchise building because he has decided to move onto different things. Clearly not as spelled out for us TDKR, but the same deal. I'd have no reason to think he is going to build more suits and still remain Iron Man aside from him saying, symbolically, really, he will "always be Iron Man". Which is really rip off from Batman Forever, but alas, Marvel's never been known for their originality.

I think the purpose of him blowing up the suits is that he was ready to move on from New York. All those suits were made during his time after New York and by blowing them up, he is ready to move on, is potentially over his PTSD.

I'm also a bit surprised how small, and ultimately useless, Rebecca Hall's role was. A lot more could have been done with her character given her background.

The whole movie was focused on how he hasn't been the same since NYC, and the suits (his hobby while he couldn't sleep) were a direct result of it. Him doing the clean slate was just moving on from that. But I don't think anything he said at the end of movie implied retirement - from saying "you're dating me, you'll never be okay," to "I AM IRON MAN." lol Of course, I didn't see the Brad Pitt version of Iron Man 3, so there might be some slight differences.

^ Yeah I'm surprised people hardly brought that up.
Fun fact: Guy Pearce (or Brad Pitt's double it seems) was first choice to play Ducard in Begins.

 Re: Iron Man 3
I also didn't like how he cures Pepper of that superpower within seconds. It's not even touched upon how he did it. It seems like it would have taken some time to figure it out. The ending sure is rushed. But as I didn't take it seriously, and I don't have a life-long passion for Iron Man and/or comicbooks, I don't care too much, and it still gets a "B+".

 Re: Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3 took a bold move, and it worked out well for the casual movie-goer, but due to the nature of the change, it has pissed off purists and fanboys to no end. You see, what distinguishes the Disney/Marvel series (ie the Avengers series) from all other superhero flicks is its light-hearted, carefree, witty tone. And then comes Iron Man 3. It looks like it might be the first dark Marvel flick, which I'm sure the hardcore fans were excited about, and I was too considering I wasn't a fan of feather-light tone of the series. But then Iron Man 3 premieres. It is nothing like what the previews had us believe, instead it is in the same light-hearted vein as the previous Marvel entries, except this time, it dives head first into this tone and takes ful advantage of it through comedy. Sufice to say, Iron Man 3 is more akin to, well Kiss Kiss Bang Bang than to the Dark Knight.
However, this is slightly ruined by the weak villain plot.

 Re: Iron Man 3
Shane Black does exhibit a casual disregard for the concerns of the fans and the history of the character. Which is not a HUGE deal for me (I am not going to declare a blood vendetta), but I can understand why fans would be upset. As a director and co-writer, he utilized this very important interval in the Marvel saga to more or less turn out two hours of microwaved one-liners unused in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and blended in an incredibly halfhearted superhero storyline.

 Re: Iron Man 3
The twist was disappointing as it related to Kinglsey. I don;t think it ruined the story. The films pacing just felt off and the ending was horribly rushed.
Outside of the flawless midair rescue and house destruction, everything about this film gets a "needs improvement". The bar chick with extremis was sooo cringe worthy.
