This was actually pretty solid. I found the lead performances from Shiloh Fernandez and Haley Bennett pretty compelling, especially the latter, and the two have a very natural chemistry with one another. It works best during the first hour which paints a very believable portrait of young love. It loses its way when the drug subplot that ultimately leads to the characters' downfalls comes into play - the Ecaudor scenes are beautifully shot but also very rushed, and then once the characters begin facing the consequences of their actions the actors just don't seem up to the material. I would have liked to have seen more of the supporting characters as well for at the moment they all play as caricatures (including a lame 'best friend' character that serves absolutely no purpose). I also thought the whole 'home video' intercuts were done much more effectively in films such as Alpha Dog - they didn't really add much here. But for the most part this film is worth checking out and a worthy addition to the 'doomed lovers' romance subgenre. B-
