Is FREDDY VS. JASON a horror movie? All it wants to do is make you laugh. That's not my argument. That's a whole other can of worms. If it was my argument then I'd have to consider 99.999% of the horror genre to be a complete failure. My argument has more to do with the sentence I singled out twice about not comprehending disappointment. If someone was expecting to be scared going in to this and wasn't (considering the poster tagline and the original film being somewhat disturbing), I think that's a legitimate gripe you can hold against the film.

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
I agree, I can honestly say I never found the original Evil Dead movies scary either. Gross and very inventive, and great atmosphere, but not really scary. Also they're visual style mixed with a lot of slapstick was very original as well.
We all find different things scary. I for one refuse to sit through the film Arachnophobia again because I hate spiders, despite seeing the whole film in it's entirety and not really being scared of it. But the general audiences seem to not be responding well to Evil Dead, so them hoping to be scared may have something to do with it.

Thegun wrote: Like said, it reminds me a lot of "The Thing" prequel. You're so used to seeing so much butchering of the source material, it's at least refreshing to see them at least attempt to be loyal. Just both times they can't succeed outside of being slightly better than the average horror film these days. Well, I think EVIL DEAD "gets" its predecessor more than THE THING does. It also helps that there isn't as far to fall -- EVIL DEAD '81 is sort of awful whenever Raimi's craziness isn't on screen.

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
Well no that isn't necessarily true, when they were released, the gore was extremely inventive and not really seen before. The film is known more for that and it's atmosphere than really scary films at the time.

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
I think when most people think back, they remember Evil Dead II anjd Army of Darkness and their remember the whacky dark humor.
However, I find the first flm to be genuinely scary and serious. The remake wasn't scary. But it also wasn't bad. In fact, compared to, say, the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street it was brilliant. And damn, I knew it'd be violent and brutal...but THAT violent?? Dayum.

Really? I wanted it to be more violent. I've seen worse. It would be up there with them though, but I'd say most of the Saw films were more gruesome. Hopefully the Blu-ray delivers the goods.
Also, the original wasn't scary at all. It was too cheesy to be scary.

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
Every single scene - or rather every single second - is entirely foreseeable, ludicrously clichéd and offers the respectively most miserable of all possible artistic choices. One brief exception might be the short scene in which nails are shot into Jesus' wrists; it was mildly amusing while it lasted.
2/10

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
A total reversal of the original Evil Dead, which is great for the first half, but completely falls apart in the last 30 minutes or so when Ash is alone. This movies is really boring for the first hour, and clearly saves the best for last. It never matches the intensity of the trailer though. Most of the gory scenes seem to be there for the sake of it, with the exception of the self arm-ripping which did seem necessary for those characters' survival. The characters are frustrating, though I did like the late protagonist switch. So arm ripping, blood rain and chainsaws earn this a C. Not terrible, but a disappointment nonetheless.
And it really needed a sense of humor beyond winks to fans of the original.

I regret giving this a B-. A C+ or even a C would be more apt.

Evil Dead (2013)
What a load of shit. There's a lot of gore, which is no substitute for scares or fear. This unnecessary remake presented bad acting, gore, terrible dialogue, and the shittiest pacing I have seen in a long time. The story was identical to the 1981 original, which was just lazy. It was boring, cliched and obvious. Did nobody have a mobile phone in this? and applying volts to a human body would not bring someone back to life, that machine in hospitals is used to slow a heartbeat, not the other way around. Uh, this flick was just terrible. I was pretty much bored throughout. I'm not going to waste much more time on reviewing this.

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
The last 10-15 minutes when it's raining blood and Mia rips her own arm off, are the closest this film comes to having any "fun". For the most part it just takes itself way too seriously, and The Cabin in the Woods pretty much decimated any chance I had of liking the new Evil Dead. Unless a new film can come along and actually be scary or fun (this doesn't come close to being scary), I think TCITW has pretty much ruined every horror film like this for me. Then again, with the exception of the original and maybe one or two others, I mostly already disliked every film that film touched on (at least in terms of horror). (D)

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
I thought the last 20 or so minutes were the worst part. The final fight is so unimaginative. I preferred the first act and its building tension.

 Re: Evil Dead (2013)
Lots of gore but it fails to bring in horror and imagination that the original brought. The final scenes are extreme but again most of it substituting gore instead of genuine horror or gasp worthy moments.
