Seems to be a great start. Will probably be enough to make a third. Did it open in China? Because I bet that's the international territory it will perform best in, especially with Algren seeing it multiple times on the big screen. :P

Opens later in April.

I have a free ticket to see it.

That pretty much guarantees a $250+ million overseas total as it hasn't yet opened in China, Japan and several small territories.

Which I'm pretty sure what they had in mind anyway.

Its a good number but kinda expected. Specially with the addition of 3D it won't get a big jump from the original though at this point $250m OS is a great number with budget reduction.

OS total will surely make ways for a third film. Also I believe they will bring back Tatum in the next part which will result in a slight increase in domestic market IMO.

Does that mean Russians, South Koreans, Mexicans, Germans, Australians and others are equally as stupid and retarded as the US citizens according to one member of this site?

well I think they were hoping for a domestic boost as well. The move IMO actually had a negative effect domestically. I think the film in its original June 29, 2012 spot would have done more than it is going to do right now (keep in mind Ted only moved there after G.I. Joe moved).

But overall, it'll make more worldwide that the delay + extra cost for conversion was worth it. However, one factor to consider is that they spent money marketing it in early 2012 that really was essentially wasted due to the move.

if it kept the original summer date it would have faced massive competition from Amazing Spider-Man and Dark Knight Rises and also would have had to deal with things like the Olympics and the Aurora theater shooting

I'd say the external factors aside it could have opened much bigger at its original summer date. It would still have almost the same in OS markets (maybe a little lesser). The move did help its OS total but it didn't help it domestically.

TDKR was weeks after it. It wouldn't have been a factor. G.I. Joe would have made 90% of its money domestically by then.

And I think ASM benefited greatly from lack of G.I. Joe. Keep in mind that there was no real big action film from Prometheus (June 8th) to ASM (July 3rd). That's a pretty big gap, particularly in the summer. Domestically speaking, it would have done less with G.I. Joe in its original spot.

In the end, I think the move is good. But I do think it could have made more domestically in its original spot and its marketing efforts in 2012 wouldn't have been seen as wasted. So there was quite a cost.

Spider-Man is the bigger draw than GI Joe, so I think Spider-Man would have hurt it

That wasn't the point I think. It would have opened bigger and with summer weekdays and TASM releasing over a holiday weekend would have helped its drop. It would have done a little better than its current spot and the marketing efforts of 2012 would not have been wasted.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation continues to outpace its predecessor at the box office. The action film added $15.6 million from 61 territories this weekend to reach a $168.3 million overseas gross. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra reached a lifetime $152.3 million overseas.

Strong hold-over showings in its third week of release in Brazil ($1.2M weekend, $8M cume), Germany ($1.1M weekend, $9.4M cume), and Mexico ($1M weekend, $12.7M cume) led the pack. The global cume is currently $270.7 million. The film will be released in China tomorrow and can see continued growth over the next several weeks if it can find an audience there.
