Besides Argo (ugh) I'm actually very happy with the winners! Django! Ang Lee!

And 50 pages - I'm proud of you, people. I am pretty sure we didn't get that many in years. And even without me here! For the first time ever (been watching the Oscars since 1999) I saw the Oscars not at home, but at a fellow reviewer's place which was pretty cool.

Good enough to be nominated, which means that the Academy thought she gave one of the best performances of the year among actresses.

Re: 2013 WOKJ Official Oscar Watching Party
Random thoughts:
- The show was really meh. The opening act was waaaayyyyy too long and Seth MacFarlane didn't deliver as well as I hoped for. Then again, neither did Ted, so there is a similarity right there.
- The biggest and most interesting surprise of the night was the Sound Editing tie. So rare to witness something like this
- I thought the whole musical tribute thing felt forced and random...I mean why this year anyway? Though Catehrine Zeta-Jones and Jennifer Hudson rocked the house, but still...random.
- The James Bond tribute felt weak. The best they could come up with? Though seeing and hearing Bassey was cool
- Also, why have three of the five Best Song contenders be performed...could they really get no one to perform the other two? And don't get me started on that Adele performance. I love the song, but the performance was the biggest letdown of the night. Partly because it was not sung that well, but also partly because the sound was off.
- I am immensely happy that my favorite has won in EACH acting category. Very happy that Waltz upset. The next time he acts for Tarantino, anticipation will be HUGE.
- The wealth was REALLY spread this time. Beasts of the Southern Wild got (expectedly screwed by being the only BP nominee to win NOTHING)
- It's nice to have Tarantino win another Oscar, but I wish it wasn't for one of his weakest screenplays (I'd argue that, after Death Proof, Django IS his weakest screenplay)
- The only win that really bothered me was Ang Lee winning for Best Director. He was easily the worst nominee and with two Oscars under his belt, I am now more convinced than ever that he's the single most overrated acclaimed director working right now. Life of Pi is the 2nd-worst BP nominee, a movie that is pretty too look at, but way too lost in its pretentiousness at times, with a middle act that is simple a bore at times. Then again, the latter applies to most Ang Lee films. Again Lee has won when Spielberg deserved the Oscar more (2005 Spielberg also did a much better job on Munich than Lee on Brokeback)

My thoughts.
I am surprised they use the theme from the Happiest Millionaire for Seth's entrance. An obscure reference from the start.
Jennifer Lawrence tripping. The Academy Hall of Shame.
A tie!!! Wow.

Like, she had her typical rich, full tone during those, then during the chorus somehow got completely drowned out. Stupid band.

Re: 2013 WOKJ Official Oscar Watching Party
I had an Oscar party with my friends. Didn't see much of it though. LOL. I was busy with some other stuff. Seth was good, Adele was disappointing (I'm not her fan, but she usually nails it vocally. This time she sounded very weak), Anne's speech was terrible and I have no idea why they needed the musical montage. Especially using Chicago and Dreamgirls. Does anyone care about those two anymore?
But despite the winners being rather predictable, I'm glad that the wealth was spread all over.
Also LOL @ those thinking Lee wasn't deserving. That's just wrong.

I just finished watching the Oscars on DVR - - and I'm very impressed with Seth MacFarlane as host (especially considering my dislike for his work) - - he did a great job! ________________________________________ Dr. Lecter wrote: Life of Pi is the 2nd-worst BP nominee, a movie that is pretty too look at, but way too lost in its pretentiousness at times, with a middle act that is simple a bore at times. In other news, I was perusing the Ender's Game page on IMDb and saw Harrison Ford's character's assistant is played by an Asian American actor named Han Soto.

AND YESSS we are at 50! I love Chastain but wasn't blown away by her in Zero Dark Thirty. She was great, but not GREAT . I wouldn't have been mad if she'd won as she is talented and seems like the most lovely person, but I was blown away by Jennifer in Silver Linings Playbook. I don't care if this girl is still young, this was an Oscar-caliber performance. I really didn't care for her performance in Winter's Bone. Thought it was overrated, as was the film.

Re: 2013 WOKJ Official Oscar Watching Party
Her performance in Winter's Bone is far, far superior to her performance in Silver Linings. And there is not even a competition between the films: Winter's Bone leaves Silver Linings in the dust.

Re: 2013 WOKJ Official Oscar Watching Party
Regarding the first question in the above Lawrence video: I find the positioning of Silver Linings as this courageous and/or "inspirational" portrait of mental illness very phony. It is an entertaining and very sweet romantic comedy, do not get me wrong, but the idea David O. Russell and co. have wildly pushed the envelope by casting two beautiful film stars as adorable loons who more or less cure each other with love is a painful reach.
