 Oscar movies catch-up
Each year around Oscar time, I try to make the effort and catch up some of the "older" Oscar-nominated films that I have missed in the past or judt never got around seeing. This year, I've got ten movies on my list - five former Best Picture nominees and five Best Foreign Language nominees - the latter because I realized how few of those I have seen over the recent years.
Here's the list of films, I am planning to watch:
BP-nominees:
Gosford Park Places in the Heart On Golden Pond Ordinary People The Mission
Best Foreign Language Film nominees:
In a Better World In Darkness Monsieur Lazhar Bullhead Departures
I'll give short comments on the fiolms that I have seen.
Anyone here seen any of those?

Gosford Park, I just remember being bored to death, but I was in a bad mood that day and really didn't pay attention.
Last week I watched Dangerous Liasions (1988), which was pretty good. Malkovich was the highlight, Thurman was actually pretty cute and beautiful back then and Close nailed her performance.

Dangerous Liaisons is great. I wasn't a fan of Pfeiffer's performance, but Malkovich and Close are simply brilliant in the film. It's a shame Close still hasn't won an Oscar. The screenplay is also terrific.
Have you seen Austria's Best Foreign language films: 38, Amour, Revanche and The Counterfeiters?

I've seen Revanche and The Counterfeiters. I thought both were ok but nothing earth-shattering there. I'm going to rent Amour tomorrow or sometime this week. I'm scared to watch that movie.

I was prepared on hating Ordinary People (since people claim it robbed Raging Bull) but... I liked/loved it and it winning made sense considering the era. Of course, they had to con Timothy Hutton into doing category fraud.

I'm scared to watch that movie. I didn't find Amour as depressing as many did, but I did find it very tedious in parts. Though well-shot and well-acted. The Counterfeiters was just decent, absolutely nothing special. Certainly not the best nominee in its year. Meh.

 Re: Oscar movies catch-up
I love Gosford Park and On Golden Pond.
Ordinary People is very good, too. Its reputation is so tarnished because it defeated Raging Bull. I will not say it deserved to win, but it is a moving and very well-acted domestic drama.
The Mission has one of the best original scores ever.

I knew of "Gabriel's Oboe" first before finding out it is part of the score to The Mission! Beautiful stuff.

I am going to watch Lincoln and War Horse soon. I should probably watch Schindler's List too as I've only seen parts.
