Somewhat baffling, Cloud Atlas easily had the best score of 2012, yet somehow topped by Skyfall, Cmon KJ.

Thomas Newman is a talented composer, but I do not find the Skyfall score particularly memorable. I prefer Casino Royale's score by less prestigious, but still very talented franchise veteran David Arnold.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The nominees are:

The Cabin In the Woods

Image
Just a small glance at who's behind the script of The Cabin In the Woods is enough to immediately figure out you're not getting ANOTHER typical run-of-the-mill horror from the Hollywood factory. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard (both of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) like their horror with a tongue wiggling through the hole in its cheek. A mash-up of completely expected horror cliches and completely unexpected self-awareness resulted in an instant cult classic meta-horror comedy.

Django Unchained
Image
So nobody is surprised anymore when Quentin Tarantino hits it out of the ballpark. Django Unchained continues the tradition of great scripts being turned into great movies. But where he excels is the dialogue. The long dialogues are a mainstay of QT scripts, but the mother*ucker always finds a way to make it worthwhile. You just know he's building it up to something out of this world cool. And Django has more payoffs than you can count.

Looper
Image
Looper was one of the few pleasant surprises this year. Writer/director Rian Johnson has been toying with the idea for nearly a decade and it finally came to fruition in the form of an intriguing mix of science fiction and neo-noir movie. But the best thing about the script is that it's still more about characters than about a crazy (and frankly it's slightly a non-sensical) plot.

Moonrise Kingdom
Image
Moonrise Kingdom is one of the most vivid, colorful and cute movies you'll probably ever see. So it's no wonder the movie's script is available in an equally charming format right here -> http://focusguilds2012.com/mrkscript/
Click it and check out the brainchild of Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola. No other introduction is necessary for this one.

Zero Dark Thirty
Image
Zero Dark Thirty reunites writer Mark Boal with the director Kathryn Bigelow. It's their second Iraq themed movie. Unlike The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty follows a more mainstream plot - it's based on real life events and follows the 10 year hunt on Osama bin Laden.

Nope, TDKR was easily 2nd best.

This is an interesting category. It is hard to compare the screenplays. Django Unchained is a triumph of character and humor. Zero Dark Thirty is a triumph of journalistic integrity and social conscious. Moonrise Kingdom is a great, very humane and unique comedy. The Cabin in the Woods succeeds in both paying ecstatic homage to and lighting a piece of satiric dynamite under the horror genre.

And Looper is neat, too.

Anna Karenina's tracks are better than TDKR's for the second spot

Anna Karenina does have an amazing, amazing score. Very beautiful and creative.

But I am not too sad it lost. It won two awards. :) And I dig the music in The Dark Knight Rises.
