Marvel's greatest heroes, including Captain America and Iron Man, unite to save the world from an alien invasion in The Avengers, and such a grouping requires awe-inspiring FX, ranging from the rendering of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s gargantuan flying compound to the astounding and disturbing third-act destruction of Manhattan.



Ace practical FX and convincing, almost invisible computer generated images blend well in The Dark Knight Rises, the epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's celebrated Batman trilogy, which features numerous memorable images and set pieces, including a spectacular escape from a CIA aircraft in midair and the devastating bombing of the Gotham Rogues' football stadium.



The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the fourth live-action visit to Middle-earth, depicting the first leg of the dwarfs' arduous journey to slay the dragon who laid waste to their rightful mountain home, includes the detailed and majestic FX audiences expect and desire from this fantasy franchise, including a nightmare visit to an underground goblin kingdom and air travel atop giant eagles.



A photo-realistic computer generated tiger (the second most important character) and ocean environment are the visual centerpieces of Life of Pi, Ang Lee's luminous sea adventure drama.



The world of Alien and Aliens is revisited in the big-budget prequel Prometheus, which features numerous astonishing computer generated sights, from the title spaceship to an enormous, menacing sandstorm to, of course, more than a few aliens.

The film is okay, but the visuals are astonishing. If you ever plan to see it, then do see it in 3D. It is one of those few films that are worth it.
