John Carter

It's certainly not as bad as Battleship, but still a very empty vessel, laden with cliched conventions and a lethargic script.

There's nothing in John Carter that hasn't been done before in many other films, and to a better final product too. Action sequences were stolen from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and the whole story has been done before with films such as Avatar. The white man helping the indiginous race fight an opressive force, it's all been done so many times. Some of the CGI was well executed, but overall I found myself far more interested in the Earth scenes than anything on Mars. The score was possibly the worst thing, very grandiose but absolutely unmemorable because the same sounds are used in all blockbusters. The instances of light humour were incredibly annoying (accompanied by a little melodic rift each time), and just reminded me that I was watching a formulaic, safe-bet Disney kids adventure.

I fail to see how anyone over the age of 15 could find this anything more than bearable. I'd sit with my kids to watch it, but probably nod off. Taylor Kitsch was a little more suited to the role of John Carter than he was in anything else he's appeared in, but I reiterate, as a soldier of the Civil War, not an alien superhero. Lynn Collins was by far the worst acting culprit in the movie, and Daryl Sabara showing that he's not improving very quickly as an able actor.

I think Andrew Stanton should stick to animated movies in future.
