Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a 1992 American action/comedy film about a Valley girl cheerleader named Buffy (Kristy Swanson) who learns that it is her fate to hunt vampires. The film starred Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, Rutger Hauer, Luke Perry and Hilary Swank. It was a moderate success at the box office, but received mixed reception from critics. The film was taken in a different direction than its writer, Joss Whedon, intended, but several years later he was able to create the darker and acclaimed TV series of the same name.

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. I remember TBS always had this thing called "Dinner and a Movie" and they would air this every few months and I would always stay up late to watch it. I just recently revisited it on Blu-ray and it's still a blast. It has a lot of big actors in nothing roles (Ben Affleck at Basketball Player #11 anyone?) and is just a really fun flick to watch.
7/10

I always liked this one more than the series. Poor Kristy Swanson, she was one gorgeous talented actress that never quite made it.

The series was God awful. Then it somehow shat out another in the name of Angel.

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I will be honest, I can only say I've only seen maybe 5 episodes of the series in my lifetime, and this from a guy who used to watch the WB for Hercules and Xena every week for 6 years. It always seemed more like a teenage knockoff of those shows and I never found Gellar a good replacement to Swanson. I've always disliked her as an actress, which is a shame because I've interviewed her twice, and she is just a lot of fun, or stellar gellar as we called her.
I like the more cultish aspects of this film.

More solid proof that Buffy is amazing. It has things like 'characters' and 'themes' -- stuff that terrifies Algren and makes his brain hurt. (Also: strong female leads.)

You're such a stereotype, man. It's actually funny.
Buffy lacks things like 'acting' and 'excitement' -- stuff that terrifies The Dark Shape and his infantile, horror-loving brain.

I can't even. TDS is "infantile" for appreciating Buffy the Vampire Slayer? It's one of the most widely praised television series of all time, and for good reason.

Wouldn't my horror-loving brain crave excitement, considering much of the appeal of horror is that it gives the audience a rush? It'd be like me calling you a homophobe when all you want to want to do is watch big sweaty shirtless men run around for hours on end.
Anyway...
It feels too real. What awful acting.

*sigh*
That episode. "The Body" is one of the greatest individual episodes of a TV show in history, drama or comedy. The entire episode is shattering, but this scene in particular...anyone who ever says Sarah Michelle Gellar is untalented is just incorrect.

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Totally agreed. That episode was just on Logo a few weeks ago and it was the first time I've seen it in years. I knew I shouldn't have watched it (my Granny, who is the person I was always closest to in this world, passed away about a week before it aired) and I was just in tears the entire episode.
Off topic, but the episode of Full House where Jesse's grandfather passes away aired literally a week after my Granny passed too. I shouldn't have watched that one either. What a fucking wreck I was during both of them.

Never understood the love for the show. Vastly overrated until otherwise notified.

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I loved this movie growing up too. Seriously rented and watched it quite a few times. Then the show came along and made the movie seem less impressive. I haven't watched the movie since, but wouldn't mind revisiting it someday.
The show was on an entirely different level though. It's funny because before the show aired when I just heard about it I was expecting the worst. Didn't think it could live up to this awesome flick. Boy was I proved wrong.
And yes, Kristy Swanson was hot. So was Luke Perry.
