Alfie: C+

Jude Law's surprisingly solid performance in the 2004 edition of Alfie is wasted in this film. The film appears majorly outdated. While the original movie worked (aside from Michael Caine) because it was released in a time when one night stands were the norm *everywhere* and was thus far more effective, the age of AIDS socks a lot of Alfie's potential. The best thing about this movie is unquestionably Jude Law, who does a surprisingly nice job with a less than likeable character. He does not attempt to copy Michael Caine, which is the right way to go. Unfortunately, the "talking to the audience" bit from the original (which was inspired) is now cliched, which just serves to make Alfie more of a smug bastard than he already is. Of the terrific female supporting cast, including Susan Sarandon, Marisa Tomei, Nia Long, Sienna Miller and Jane Krakowski, none stand out because of their stereotypical, cliched roles (the sensual older woman, the nice girl, the best friend's girl, the party girl, the slutty girl, etc.) Omar Epps does not fare much better as Alfie's best pal. Although the ending is handled well (there is no deus ex machina resolution here), Alfie ends up being a mixed bag.

The Ring Two: A-

After such a long wait, I can't say that I didn't love it. I guess it's not what I expected, and I wasn't as dissapointed as I could have been because I was warned ahead of time about it. It's definently not a horror movie. I don't think they really even tried to scare the audience (except, maybe, once). It's definently a drama with some freaky moments thrown in. I loved the story. I'm surprised, because I thought the story would be the weak part about the movie, but it was it's strong point, in my opinion. Naomi Watts's performance was good, though it doesn't match up to her performance in the first. As for The Ring vs. The Ring Two... well, it's a no contest. The Ring was the best horror movie I've ever seen. It brought a great premise, and scares. The Ring Two brought a great premise and answered a lot of the unanswered questions in the first. It definently doesn't meet up to the first, but I never expected it to. The one thing I noticed was that they didn't really focus too much on the actual tape in this movie, but more Aden and Samara. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot, especially since I expected to be a little dissapointed.

Truman Show - B+

Saw this again for the first time in about 5years, still a really great movie. It's plot could've used some work - but it's a very original idea with fantastic performances ( especially by Carrey )

Robots

For me Its the Second worst CGI movie, the worst is Shark Tale, Robots Of course is a lot better, its not a bad movie, it just lacked a few things one of those is comedy, but it had a wonderful message. Nice visuals as always.
i saw it in Spanish, so thats a Minus point for me, i need to see it in English and im sure im going to increase my grade

so i give it a B-

Solaris A- It really wasn't given enough attention, though it's understandable why it wasn't accepted by the masses. It's a beautiful movie, and I appreciated it's philosophy on dreams, love and reality.

American Beauty: A

American Beauty was fantastic. Loved every minute of it. The acting is awesome. Kevin Spacey gives his best performance (from what I've seen of his, though this is probably untoppable). My favorite line of his in the movie was right in the first few minutes of the movie. "Look at me, jacking off in the shower. This is actually the highlight of my day. It's all downhill from here." HAHAHAHA! There was so many funny parts, though I don't think it was meant to be a comedy. All other performances were great too. The best part about American Beauty, besides it's performances, cinematography, screenplay, and all is it's realism. I loved how at points, it really felt like it's all true and happening. Eh, hard to explain, I guess. Anyways, loved it.

The Thomas Crown Affair (1999): B+

A brilliant crime caper. Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo light up the screen with their undeniable chemistry. I enjoyed it a lot. The final scene in the museum was, by far, the best part about the movie, and very well done.

Ice Princess: B+
What a charming surprise. Ice Princess was a delightful film that I'm glad I saw. Although the film is hardly original and follows many of its plot elements like you'd expect, it has its heart in the right place. Michelle Trachtenberg is wonderful as Casey, a science geek who applies basic physics to the practice of figure skating, where she eventually realizes her dream. Joan Cusack (Casey's mom) and Kim Cattrall (Casey's coach) are both quite good as two different parents who have two totally opposite opinions on nearly everything. As Gen, Hayden Panettiere represents a typical "blonde snob" from these types of movies, but Ice Princess changes this and allows her character to be someone who is decent and kind-hearted. She wants to *not* figure skate as much as Casey wants to. Many of the characters in Ice Princess have more of a depth to them than is usual in these films. We can understand many of the things the characters do and say, which is rare for a sports film.

The Upside of Anger: A-
Mike Binder's The Upside of Anger is a wonderful, emotionally sophisticated dramedy with great writing and acting. The film has six characters present, all of whom are developed extremely well. Binder (appearing in the film) is good at creating a character who comes across as sleazy and cad-ish, but not villainous. Erika Christensen, Evan Rachel Wood, Alicia Witt and Keri Russell all shine as the four daughters. Much has been said about Kevin Costner's supporting performance - it's probably his career-best as Denny, a former baseball player (what else?) who tends to hide his emotions under alcohol and snarky comments. The film belongs to Joan Allen as Terry, though. Her ferocious intensity, acid-tongued wit and touching vulnerability collide into a performance that might be one of Allen's best. She completely deserves Oscar consideration for this performance. Although The Upside of Anger occasionally descends into murky, sad depths, Binder never allows the film to lose a sense of humor, which is important.
