$300m in the US is looking good, so if China can just pull off $40m+ to bring it to $1B/$700m OS that'd be great.

Key international markets:

Germany: $86.6m
UK: $83.5m
France: $44.6m
Russia: $43.7m
Australia: $42.9m
Spain: $29.4m
Italy: $22.1m
Korea: $21.8m
Sweden: $21.5m
Japan: $19.8m
Mexico: $19.3m
Brazil: $17.8m

In terms of gross it's the biggest hit of the year in Germany. For once the country makes me proud. ;)

I'm still a bit shocked that Germany ended up being bigger than the UK for this.

Japan is such a flop, that should have been $40m, at least.

Imagine if Japan had done $100m. $800m OS would have been possible.

I'm hoping for $80m in China but there's a lot of movies opening around it. As long as it cracks $50m i'm content.

It's crazy, though, how easily Skyfall ended up OWNING it overseas without 3D. It's gonna finish almost $100 million higher.

It's not crazy when consider their paths. The Hobbit was coming off a very successful and beloved franchise, people don't like an imitator to great art. Whereas Skyfall was coming off of a universally disliked predecessor, which a great movie would have been welcomed, and was.

But I just didn't think Skyfall could reach the uber-blockbuster heights that it has. I'm extremely pleased that it has.

Lecter keeps on bringing shame to Hobbit with Skyfall in last few of his posts. I mean we realize that Skyfall broke out but you have to realize that Hobbit didn't breakout (and there was always a strong possibility for it) and still made $1b which is good. Regardless of inflation and other factors that people throw in here its not fair to compare these two franchises and that's it. Plus Skyfall beat a lot of movies this year it wasn't supposed to beat, its UK performance is absolutely insane whereas Hobbit's previous biggest market Japan had abysmal results.

Now I'm not justifying Hobbit's OS...It is beyond bad but it should NOT be compared to Skyfall for saying its bad.

I don't think The Hobbit's overseas total is bad by any means. It's the fourth biggest of the year, matching its domestic tally. Don't blame the performance, man, blame your expectations.

Yeah even for the optimistic expectations $700m is kinda bad for it IMO.

Well it's a bit disappointing. It's a HUGE drop in admissions from RotK and even from FotR and TTT. And yet, many overseas markets have grown a lot since 2001-2003.

You realize, actually it is the other way around, right? Coming off a beloved predecessor usually helps (see Pirates 2, Transformers 2) and coming off a disliked predecessor hurts the film...so, Skyfall is even more of a phenomenon. Also, the 3D premium is a big deal here.

For one of the biggest blockbuster of the years in 3D, specially the one appealing to OS audience I think $700m OS is close to pretty normal these days with the growth in markets. This is not a movie/franchise which was doing just normal business these movies were one of the highest grossing movies WW between 2001-2003 and this one will not even come close to #10. It should have done more even if not close to HP numbers but even POTC4 did $800m OS. $100m lesser is quite big of a difference.

Normally yes, but I was outlining the other way of thinking.

No, it's not. It is, however, somewhat disappointing. It has done very well, mainly in Europe, but it just doesn't have that one huge breakout in any country except maybe Sweden but it's a small country. Plus the floppage in Japan hurt its bottom line.

I'd say beyond bad is disappointing :P

Japan...oh Japan and they are doing the same mistake of releasing Hobbit 2 so close to the actual release date. I think it works better there if they release movies few months late there :P

So it need just $40m from China, $700m is pretty much a lock, plus $300m domestic is looking good. It should beat TDK but it needs to do about $60m in China to get past Alice and TPM unadjusted.

So it won't make $665m from holdovers.
