Yep, that's why we call him Spike " Chip On My Shoulder" Lee. He's a twat, and a racist, but his racism is apparently accepted by society.

9 Reasons why I liked Django Unchained
1. Candie's Phrenology Monologue
Calvin Candie's brilliant speech in which he depicts the reasoning for why an entire race is biologically wired for enslavement is designed to provoke ire. That a population of humans actually believed in such phrenology is extremely accurate. Candie intimidates his audience and uses a skull to prove his lesson, and it's the monologue that every other atrocity in Django Unchained is hinged upon. Great use of racism.
2. Stephen
Samuel L. Jackson's Stephen is one of the most unforgettable characters in Django Unchained. He is a sharp, outspoken, and obedient Uncle Tom at Candieland, and he refuses to accept the notion that Django could be a free man, be on a horse, or be treated like anything other than one of the slaves he supervises. The relationship he has with Candie and Candieland is absolutely essential to Django Unchained, and the manner in which he treats Django and handles his daily business is fascinating to watch.
3. Racial Slurs
No shortage of print has been spent on the prodigious usage of the word 'nigger' in Tarantino's Django Unchained. Estimates on the number of times it appears in the film vary, but it's undeniably in the triple figures. It's the most evocative word in the English language. Given the thematic nature and setting of Django Unchained, not a single instance the literally countless times the slur is spoken is misused. It is designed to be offensive, and it succeeds every time.
4. The Shootout
The intense shootout when Django goes head-to-head with a small army is one of the most blood-splattered, gleeful, and cathartic extended scenes of stylized violence in cinema in recent years. It's the moment Django's entire saga has built up to, and Tarantino holds absolutely nothing back as far as bullets flying, blood spraying, and explosive carnage goes.
5. Jerry
At Miscegeny Heaven, plantation owner Big Daddy and his slave Bettina have a dialogue about the manner in which Bettina should treat Django. Bettina has never met a black person who wasn't a slave, and Big Daddy struggles to convey the message to her that Django is a free man, not a slave. Big Daddy settles on telling her to "treat him like Jerry." We never meet Jerry, but it's safe to conclude he's likely a white person with some sort of mental incapacity. Great use of racism.
6. Responses to Django on a Horse
From the moment of the opening scene when Schultz frees Django and provides him a horse, every person - white or black - who sees Django throughout the rest of the film is in utter disbelief of what they are seeing. Schultz and Django travel into towns and up to plantation entrances, and every reaction is that of dumbfounded staring. Schultz can't figure out what the issue is, and Django explains, "They ain't never seen a nigger on a horse".
7. 1 in 10,000
Many times throughout the film, Candie refers to Django as the "1 in 10,000 nigger". His meaning behind the phrase stems from his belief in phrenology, and his reasoning of it lies in his fascination of never meeting a black man like Django. Candie (and every white in the movie besides Schultz) cannot wrap his head around the idea that a black man can be of remotely equal standing to a white man, and his repeated exclamation of Django being 1 in 10,000 makes Django the unbelievable exception to the rule.
8. Mandingo Fighting
Physically powerful black slaves are bought and sold for the sole purpose of brutally beating each other to death in bloody hand-to-hand combat while white aristocrats watch the spectacle in greedy, bloodthirsty glee. The winner of the death match is treated to a large beer and is told he earned it. Literally treated like dogs, which is ironic since my next point is...
9. Release the Dogs
The audience's first introduction to Candieland finds Dr. Schultz, Django, Candie, Candie's lawyer, and a dozen-plus of Candie's slaves happening upon a frightened runaway slave up in a tree as vicious dogs haunt the tree's base, bark and wait to rip the slave limb from limb. It's a pivotal, excruciating scene that finds Schultz disgusted by the horrific display, while Django inhabits the utter darkness of his role-playing in order to sell Candie on his background. Our hero is complicit in the unspeakable brutality against his own people, and all we can do is look on in horror.

 Re: Django Unchained
QT's cameo unnecessary! His Aussie accent terrible. The only reason he slotted those scenes in were because he wanted to have a role for his Aussie crush John Jarrat (the psycho in Wolf Creek) as QT is a big fan of that film and also owes Jarrat for dumping him from Death Proof.

 Re: Django Unchained
I'm a big QT fan and went in with high but guarded expectations. It didnt disappoint in that it may not be one of QT's best, it certainly is a well made and entertaining film that could have been even better had it ended after the Candy land handshake and shoot-out.
The scenes at Candy land were stunning but the last 30 minutes were anticlimactic and just not that exciting. Perhaps it was because I wasnt that invested in Django. I loved the scenes when he and Schulz orchestrate the meeting with Hilda but the final revenge shootouts were more style over substance. In fact by then it feels that Django is going too far. Schultz is the heart and soul of the film and Waltz is once again a joy to watch. DiCaprio gives another strong performance as does Jackson who has the most fun with a character he has had in years, perhaps since Pulp Fiction.
QT is in regular top form though as others have mentioned the loss of Menke is felt as the film is indeed less focused and more indulgent.
Still its unfair to judge against previous QT films alone.
Grade A-

Yes, this is the big problem with the movie.

 Re: Django Unchained
An FYC copy got leaked on to youtube, you know I watched it.
Waltz really is the heart and soul of this film. There is no other Tarantino character like Schultz (having not seen Jackie Brown). He is just so warm and fuzzy despite being a bounty hunter.
Meanwhile, the more and more I watch Django, the more and more I think Leo is becoming one of the most underrated performances in this film amogst the actors at least because...
Kerry Washington, really is underrated, I wouldn't put her in the same league as Diane Kruger from Inglourious Basterds, but she deserves more respect than she has received. If the film included her background story with Scotty and Candie (and the film had been 30 minutes longer or split into two films), I would say she would easily have been given more respect. She clearly committed to this role, but most of her character was cut out of the final script.

 Re: Django Unchained
Kerry Washington kind of does nothing in the movie apart from look hot. Sorry, but she's the worst character in the movie besides Django.
And what's this about you having not seen Jackie Brown? I thought you were a Tarantino fanboy.. I think you'll have to revoke that status.

 Re: Django Unchained
Nor have I seen Death Proof.
I have seen parts of Jackie Brown, but could not get into the movie. But I am going to give another shot as I plan to write a book analyzing Tarantino as a post-modern filmmaker in response to the disrespect he still obtains from uptight critics who see him as nothing more than popcorn fodder.

Brown is Tarantino's most underrated flick. It's awesome. Death Proof on the other hand is kinda bad for Tarantino's standards. And I agree Kerry Washington does basically nothing in the movie.

 Re: Django Unchained
You have to have seen both Jackie Brown and Death Proof to call yourself a Tarantino fan. From Dusk till Dawn and Four Rooms, too, honestly. He is not exactly Woody Allen level prolific. Get on it, Darth. Jackie Brown is my personal favorite.

If anyone had problems with the shift in the last 30 minutes, I recommend rewatching the film. It flows much better the second time for whatever reason.

 Re: Django Unchained
I'd buy that. The more i think about it the less the last 30mins bothers me. Keen to see it again even though I still maintain Django should probably been played by a different actor.
