You are right. It is a very powerful guild. The WGA strike was a baby tantrum compared as to when/if SAG-AFTRA decides to lock-out.

Think about how much actors got paid before the formation of SAG (in what was it the 1930s?), It was pretty much next to nothing, or at the very least, it wasn't that much. and now, even landing bit parts in television shows can be enough to at least get back and make a living off of (I went to high school with someone who is doing this as her career).

Actors throughout human society have typically been the lowest class, and in some societies, they exist beneath the social pyramid altogether, such as in Japan. Other forms of art had their respect, but it is not until the 20th century that the acting life has become this respectable dream job.

^yup. SAG pretty much ensured its actors that the studio system would stop taking advantage of them.

A good friend of mine got by doing extra work while under SAG. Was able to afford a lot of things he would only dream of.

He hasn't been working much since he says a lot of his peers are pretty fake and now, he is regretting it.

She is easily the worst part of the Neil Gaiman version of Princess Mononoke

As much as I love her, Claire's speech was fucking terrible.
