Wow! Look at Broken City. I knew it wouldn't be able to connect with the urban audiences. Big loss for Wahlberg though, he was a on a role. He should just do comedies from now on.

Huge overperformance for Mama. Aside from benefiting by being the only January release not rated R (has that ever happened in a month before?), I echo Jon's thoughts by being happy for Jessica Chastain.

Tepid start for Broken City considering the starpower, and horrible for The Last Stand. I know it's been a long time since Schwarzenegger was a top draw but good lord.

Silver Linings Playbook made less than Nikki originally claimed (shocker), but a $12M 4-day weekend after having played for over 2 months is nothing to sneeze at. $100M is still very possible.

To the BO sensei's here - - how does this number look for confirming/denying the $300m lock?

Obviously Chastain doesn't have any pull yet, but carrying two hit movies right next to each other is going to get noticed in Hollywood. Along with the Oscar nomination, it increases her chances for A-list roles in big movies. If she bags the Oscar, which she well might, she'll go straight to A-list.

Again, not too bad for someone who was a relative unknown 6 months ago.

The last time two female-led films leading the box office would be The Help and Colombiana on the 08/26/11 - 08/28 frame, with Chastain involved too. :)

Wow, crazy good for Mama.

And hilariously bad for The Last Stand.

That's pretty embarrassing for The Last Stand.

Let me put the positive spin on The Last Stand. Yes, the box office is bad, and because it opened so low it won't be able to hold theaters long enough for possible good WOM to help it. That said, it seems it's pretty well liked by those who have seen it, and it should find a significant audience after theaters. Good will from that will help his next movie. And there's always a chance it will do well overseas too.

Other than Mama there are a lot of disappointing numbers, IMO. Hopefully we'll see some increases today.

The holdovers targeting 16+ men (aka all of them but Les Mis) should see great Saturday/Saturday drops from last week due to no football.

My God. The Last Stand's number is beyond dreadful.

Broken City is an unbelievably big dud as well. At least The Last Stand flopping is more understandable. It's a movie with an aging action star nobody really cares about anymore. Didn't look good from the ads either.

I would love to see Silver Linings Playbook sneak past Broken City for the weekend.

I just cannot believe The Last Stand's opening day is lower than Lockout's last year.

It's nice that SLP expanded pretty modestly. The release schedule was questionable but it's performing how it should.

I knew the $4.3 m Friday for SLP was too good to be true!

Still, 7 weekends with a per theater average between $3,900 - $6,200. It's shown some great consistency. $100 m looks very possible.

How many Actors/Actresses have had top billing in the Top 2 movies at the box office on a single weekend? Or star in two different movies that were #1 back-to-back weekends? I don't care if nobody knows who Jessica Chastain is, I'm too happy for her.

Charlize Theron- Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus in back to back weekends 50+ opening
Jeff Bridges- Tron and True Grit

It's not unprecedented, though I think we can all agree that Chastain had nothing to do with either film's success. Either way, good for her, so far she has nothing lined up until at least 2015, I hope she doesn't waste her momentum.
