Re: THE HOBBIT: An Unexpected Journey (WW ASSAULT) - AUS REC
Hobbit will probably make 1.05B at best WW. Skyfall is highly likely to make 1.1B WW (may be even hit the top 5 all time WW number). So skyfall will handily beat hobbit in OS and WW. Next weekend numbers will give us better perspective on domestic though hobbit is the big favorite at the moment.

I think Skyfall will explode in China.

Re: THE HOBBIT: An Unexpected Journey (WW ASSAULT) - AUS REC
As for this weekend it is harder-than-expected drop for me. Though Pi expanding in OS markets could be the reason as well (in terms of loosing 3D and IMAX theaters). It is still a good total and better rebound in OS markets. Crossing $560m was the least I thought it would do this weekend, maybe I was expecting too much By next weekend it should get to $620m OS and if that happens I am sure $700m OS is happening with a very slight chance for $750m if China breaks out.

We're talking about China, not "Asian markets". Chinese people do not care about where it's filmed. In fact, they're so in love with everything foreign, that all movies tend to do well enough to disguise any bump that filming location would give it.

Different films and different way of marketing China, still we will see how it goes.
P.S. Was Looper really shot in China or did they make sets for it?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will now open on Feb 21 in China. Skyfall opens on Jan 21, so there's no worry of conflicting schedules. But it will have to compete against A Good Day to Die Hard which opens in China on Feb 18.

That's really good date compared to the last one both had plus enough breathing space for both the movies.

Yeah, $700 million is happening as is $1 billion worldwide, but unless it becomes a HUGE breakout in China, Skyfall's WW and OS totals are safe.

It still is making 700 million and 1 Billion, so I wouldn't call it a disappointing run.

Here's hoping China contributes a nice sum. Are people there even aware of the whole HFR thing? I feel like most people here were only even vaguely aware of it.

Jedi Master Carr wrote: It still is making 700 million and 1 Billion, so I wouldn't call it a disappointing run. Extrapolating from my earlier post... Bradley Witherberry wrote: Bradley Witherberry wrote: If it had matched the performance of it's predecessors in the LOTR series, what would The Hobbit have been expected to earn given the intervening inflation plus the 3D premium? To assuage my curiosity (though my BO skillz are no where near the experts here), I did a rough calculation myself based on the ticket inflation charts plus 50% of tickets sold at a 3D premium. Based on these parameters, I estimate that the LOTR films would have earned approximately the following if released this past Xmas: FOTR = $440m TT = $480m ROTK = $530m ...I would estimate that the corresponding WW totals would be: FOTR = $1.22b TT = $1.30b ROTK = $1.57b So a 22% - 57% drop after supposedly building on the good will of the LOTR series, might be considered a significant disappointment in some circles.

Too low. FOTR would have made $1.5b today in 3D and with expanded markets. ROTK $1.7b.
