Post Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Hmm May Looks to be epic.

IM3 has a great release date and TA saved it from collapsing and should do 300+ million and will have 2 solid weeks to gross strongly...

Then Star Trek 2 has a great release date and if WOM is good has a great chance of a big haul on Memorial weekend.

Bit worried about FF6 and Hangover 3..

All of these movies are for the same group...

It looks kind of....generic (though I havent seen the 9 minute prologue). I agree with Magnus, the shorter version was more effective.

As someone who really anticipated and enjoyed the first one...this doesn't look overly special. I don't know what it is about it either, it seem sot be sinking into the conventional sequel role.

Post Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Yup. I've watched the full teaser a good 6 times now. This trailer seems dated about ~5 years. It seems like something Sony would have created for one of the Spider-man sequels.

When one analyzes the trailers for the biggest summer films of last year - Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, Hunger Games- you'll notice a distinct tone in trailers - they're all different. It is really something which started with THE DARK KNIGHT. TDK's biggest money shots were Joker & his lines, not ridiculous explosions set to ultra fast paced choir music. Ever since, film marketing effectiveness has shfted into something more 80sish, where characters, lines, and plots are sold moreso than anything else.

-The Hunger Games trailers showed little of the actual hunger games themselves, rather we saw a lot of build up
-The Avengers trailers showed little of them in action together, rather we saw a lot of build up
-The Dark Knight rises final trailer began with total silence & just dialogue. The "You've given them anything" - Not yet" & "This isn't a car" created more excitement than most of the shots did.

It is weird because on paper, that is what the ST trailer does. But instead of sounding cool, or intriguing, it just sounds kind of preachy. Try hardish. Unoriginal. Granted, the 2nd half of this trailer is much better than the first, and that is why the shorter trailer was better. The villains warning & insinuations of imposing doom are intriguing. But some 'coach' - who frankly nobody knows who he is - giving random, generic advice just comes across as phony & bland. Maybe it is because they opted for the more 'popcorny blockbuster' the first go round than serious, Nolan esque epic & as a result, it is hard to take this one seriously. This trailer just screams "Please like me! See how mainstream I am being!?", which I think in todays market will be boring. There is nothing bold here. I found the Man Of Steel trailer infinitely more impressive because it seems legitimate - every shot, every line - seems real. The film is just a piece of art, instead of something designed to please masses i.e. Jonathan Kent hinting that Superman should have let a bus of children die - it is 'different'y - bold, and it sells the films integrity on the spot. Ditto Batmans "not yet", hinting at Batmans death.

This looks like standard 115-135 million opening weekend stuff. But if it really wanted to 'break out', it would have to try a lot harder to 'stand out' (and not for being ridiculous ala PACIFIC RIM). Man Of Steel & After Earth both had far, FAR better trailers in my opinion.

You're going to have a mental breakdown when Star Trek 2 makes more than Man of Steel, aren't you?

Fast Six will move to May 31, giving it two weeks in between the tentpoles. Trek 2 vs Hangover 3 will be an interesting battle.

Fast 6 on May 31 would get a large opening weekend and get decent summer weekdays to fuel it past 200 million

Competition is an illusion. You're still treating Trek like just a normal blockbuster instead of an uber-blockbuster. Trek will be near $300M before F6 even comes out (on the 31st.)

When I went to see Hobbit in IMAX, I saw a preview of this movie (not just the trailer, but a 5-minute portion of the movie). I had no idea I'd see it. It looks really good.

Did you guys learn anything from TDKR.. ^^^

Just because you think a movie is going to be great and better then all other films does not mean anything...

I think this will top 300-350 million with ease but I think it needs to expand the audience dramatically like the levels of past mega summer blockbusters to reach 475 million.

However it does have 3d...

Hopefully nobody will bring an assault phaser (set to kill) to the midnight showings of Star Trek Into Darkness.

And The Dark Knight Rises was the third movie in the franchise. The Dark Knight is a much better comparison here.

It has 4.5/5 at Yahoo Movies, 8.0/10 at IMDB, and it got an A+ cinemascore. The fanbase has grown a lot since 2009. It has 3D.

I agree but 475 million would require a massive admission jump...

It was great. I had little interest in the movie before seeing the preview. Now I'm much more interested in it.

It was AWESOME. The 3D was superb and the cliff hanger end just peaked my interest in it :D

Actually I can see that happening though I would say it will open close to $100m or maybe cross that mark marginally. I am really concerned about the legs because of serious competition after its release.

New teaser/trailer(/TV Spot?):

Smart to start pushing the lighter aspects of the film the closer we get to the opening (Even if most of the humor is less laugh-out-loud funny and more cheesy-funny). TDK and TDKR used similar strategies to great success.

Still not sure about official prediction, but $110-120 million OW sounds about right for now.

Amazing action footage, but why the hell the spot doesn't showcase the villain and the conflict? It's basically just a random collection of moneyshots.
