The Master doesn't seem like it'll pick up any wins here. If it doesn't gain traction with the critics soon, it's out of contention for a Picture nomination.

Zero Dark Thirty's blazing emergence in the race as a distinctive, intelligent, rigorous, "important" drama will hurt The Master in terms of critical prizes.

ZD30 is sooooo this years' "2nd-4th strongest BP contender, the critic's choice, AMPAs aren't biting on that bait for the win" film. Joins Argo which is this years' "Jumps out to locked nomination and frontrunner status early, more well liked than loved, gets Willy Wonka YOU. GET. NOTHING!!!'d"

How so? The Social Network was the frontrunner all season until The King's Speech stole its thunder.

I don't see ZD30 ever being the top frontrunner, critical praise or not.

I hope the Globes revive Life of Pi a bit with a Best Picture (Drama) win.

Over Lincoln? Fat chance.

All I know is that it's an extremely interesting year.

Between Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Mis, Argo, Silver Linings, Django, Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Master, The Impossible, etc. There's a lot of different movies and lots of possibilities.

Maybe not? Would the Hollywood Foreign Press be so enthralled with an earnest American political drama? Consider their choice of Babel over The Departed and The Queen.

How dare you reduce Life of Pi to an "etc." :(

I keep forgetting about Life of Pi. lol

I think it'll be nominated but that's about it.

Not necessarily frontrunner, but the film that gets some of the biggest critics awards early, which translates into tons of buzz, but just doesn't connect with Oscar voters for a full season sweep.

ZDT is the United 93 or Letters from Iwo Jima of this year, although I do see it being in a stronger position and getting more nominations than those two. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see it getting the exact same nominations that The Hurt Locker received, except to replace Actor with Actress.

It will probably miss out on Best Score.

I'm not sure the Academy is that keen on Desplat.

Desplat's been nominated before, he'll be nominated again.

Argo placed second, The Master placed third.

Quote:
In the acting awards, Sally Fields (“Lincoln”) finally defeated initial front-runner Anne Hathaway (“The Dark Knight Rises” and “Les Miserables”) for Best Supporting Actress on a fourth ballot while, in a rare second ballot win, Matthew McConaughey (“Magic Mike” and “Bernie”) beat outChristoph Waltz (“Django Unchained”) and Tommy Lee Jones (“Lincoln”). The closest and most surprising race sawRachel Weisz (“The Deep Blue Sea”) edged Jennifer Lawrence (“The Hunger Games” and “The Silver Lining Playbook”) and Emmanuelle Riva (“Amour”). Last year’s winner Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”) was a factor throughout, tying for the lead on several ballots. (This race was by far the most polarized; only three of the 16 ballots cast for Lawrence or Chastain cited both actresses.) By contrast Daniel Day Lewis (“Lincoln”), possibly the most feted actor in NYFCC history, led on every ballot but still required three rounds of voting to best the closely bunched trio of Jack Black (“Bernie”),Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master”), and Denis Lavant (“Holy Motors”).

Greig Fraser was named Best Cinematographer for “Zero Dark Thirty,” beating the initial favorite, “The Master” on the third ballot. (In a simple, up and down vote, the critics declined to acknowledge Fraser for his work on “Killing Them Softly.”) Although heavily favored, Tony Kushner’s “Lincoln” screenplay needed four ballots to win over those for “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Moonrise Kingdom.” “The Master”’s relatively poor showing in this race presaging its ultimate fate. An early favorite for Best Director, Paul Thomas Anderson was overwhelmed by Kathryn Bigelow on the second ballot, with Ben Affleck(“Argo”) finishing a distant third. (Strikingly, Steven Spielberg, who failed to get a single first ballot votes, was never in contention.) By this time, it was evident that “Zero Dark Thirty” would run the table and, indeed, “The Master” finished third for Best Picture behind “Argo,” although it took three ballots for the obviously exhausted voters to decide the winner.
