Very impressive and maybe a sign weekend estimates were indeed low once again this week. ¥3 billion will be crossed today, it's 10th day in release (fastest film to reach this mark since Harry Potter 7.2).

It's also the fastest film to exceed 2 million admissions this year, doing it one day sooner than 'Umizaru: Brave Hearts' (which played on twice as many screens - 450) back in July.

Weekend Estimates were low once again this week.

'Evangelion 3.0' dropped 50% in it's second weekend to ¥559 million ($7 million). Much better than the 57% drop estimates had it at and it'll make the battle for #1 this upcoming weekend against 'Skyfall's debut more interesting.

'Evangelion 3.0' moves up 35 spots in seven days. It'll definitely move into the Top 10 next week and just may make a run at the #2 spot of the year.

'The Floating Castle' clears ¥2 billion after four weeks.

'Holy Scripture' and 'Chorus of Angels' debut on the charts bringing 2012's total of ¥1 billion films up to 60!

That's highest number of films above the mark since 2005. There is a Pretty Cure film still in release that should reach the mark, asl well as a few films that could have reached the mark earlier in the year. 63 is the number to beat to become the #1 year with the most ¥1 billion grossers.

What about Umizaru: Brave Hearts and Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL?

'Umizaru: Brave Hearts' was in consideration. It's the #1 film of the year and will stay there unless 'Evangelion 3.0' decides to enter berserk mode again when it isn't satisfied with the #2 spot. It's also the most attended film in the Umizaru franchise, but the second highest in gross. The only reason I didn't include it is because the others on the list did something a little bit extra.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' appears it'll finish #4 of the year now that 'Evangelion 3.0' is owning. It'll also be the lowest grossing and least attended of the Bayside Shakedown films. It still did alright, but overall a pretty average performance.

Oh I see. You only included films that improved in their respective genres or franchises. That's cool.

The Top 13 Distributors in Japan (Toho, Toho-Towa, TOEI, Shochiku, Kadokawa Pictures, Asmik Ace, Gaga, Showgate, Warner Bros., Fox, Sony, Disney, and Paramount) earned a combined revenue of ¥149,174,524,628 ($1.86 billion) for the first ten months the year (Jan. - Oct.), up 3.6% over last year despite Imported Films (Hollywood) having their worst year since 1997.

Of that combined total, Distributor Toho accounted for ¥64,656,708,736 ($807 million) for a 43.3% market share.

Has Toho been this dominating always in Japan as a distributor? I thought foreign movies/studios used to take up a big chunk of total before.

Toho and Toho-Towa are the same company, right?

Isn't Toho-Towa the foreign distribution arm of Toho?

Toho has been the #1 distributor in Japan since 2006 (the year Hollywood began it's decline, and Japan it's rise in the market). From 2006-2011, Toho regularly had a 30-35% market share, so the 43% at the end of October will easily become a record and I think that percentage will even increase before the end of the year.

Toho-Towa is a subsidiary company of Toho. They do distribute foreign imports, typically smaller or mid-size releases (most being from Universal), but in recent years they've gotten ahold of bigger films from Hollywood like Men in Black 3 and Snow White. And next month they're releasing Les Miserables which will be pretty big. Japan is getting the film 4 days before any other country.

They've always distributed the big Hollywood movies. In the 80s, they distributed Rambo: First Blood Part II and Over the Top. They were both huge blockbuster movies financially in Japan.

The bigger Hollywood movies still come from Warner Bros, Disney, and Sony in most years, but Toho-Towa has distributed a few blockbusters (Terminator 3 is their biggest release I believe).

I just read Toho-Towa has an exclusive contract with Universal Pictures, too, so that explains why they always get their films.

How much did Terminator 3 gross?

¥8.2 billion ($72 million)

Monsters Inc. (3D) is set to be released Feb. 9th. I wouldn't expect much of anything from it though considering the likes of Titanic (3D), Star Wars Episode I (3D), and Finding Nemo (3D) all disappointed last year. Honestly, nearly every 3D release disappointed last year.

I seem to be predicting the very high end for The Hobbit. Expectations are quite low - in the ¥4 billion ($50 million) range. If that happens, Hollywood is going to be in for a rough year again (2012 is their weakest year since 1997) because Monsters University is their only other film that could do more than ¥5 billion. I guess we'll see what happens in a couple weeks when it opens against One Piece and Humanoid Monster.

That The Hobbit poster should be the main US one-sheet. That's awesome and makes it a spectacle like the LOTR trilogy. I don't know what poster is the US one, but I haven't seen one yet other than the one with Bilbo on his own and a sword.
