Argo is the film version of Adele. Affleck is good at directing scenes like Adele is good at singing. At the same time it's like, whatever dude, your songs just don't make a very unique or flavorful impression

Post Re: Argo
I thought I reviewed this on here?

Anyways, out of the three Ben Affleck directorial efforts, I'd put this at number three. Not because it isn't a very good movie, it very much is, but because I don't think it offers up many surprises. It's a by-the-numbers thriller. But it's a damn good one. I would've preferred a little more of Goodman and Arkin, and I wish there could've been more masterful scenes like the table-read and the splicing that shows the huge contrasts between the situation in Hollywood with the situation in Iran, but I was quite entertained enough.

**** (A-)

This is in the middle for me for Affleck's directorial films. That means I though ti was fantastic. A good mix of thrilling suspense and historical goodness. Affleck is also good in front of the camera but I loved the Arkin/Goodman combo.

I guess I'll be alone on my island declaring this the best of the year. lol

Certainly not alone.

This is a fantastic film and deserves the acclaim its received (though that seems to be lacking her at KJ). Considering we know what happens in the end, its damn intense with perhaps the only minor issue is that for a true story, some embellishments become a little to unreal. As good as Afflek's previous two directorial efforts but more entertaining.

Grade: A

You know, its chances have actually improved somewhat. I think it started off quietly into the awards race, but has since become stronger and more visible again. It is certainly in the Top 3 with Lincoln and ZDT.

I'd be happy for it to win. Granted I haven't seen any of the other major front runners. Agree with Lecter that its in the Top 3 for chance to win.

Yep. Totally pedestrian and generally uninteresting. It's not bad by any means, it would just be such an uninspired choice to win BP.

I really really disagree. I find this to be masterful filmmaking, creating suspense with so little means. Hell, you know how it all is going to pan out and yet it kept me on the edge of my seat all the time. And the ensemble is terrific.

Libs - did you realise that the oldest of the embassy staff who escaped was played by Tate Donovan who played Rachel's love interest Joshua on Friends?

I never posted my thoughts on this. Weird. :P I enjoyed it but found it massively overrated. I didn't find it anything more than an entertaining flick and nothing more than that. Ben Affleck's direction was decent but nothing special, as was his performance. I'm happy he was snubbed. Also, Alan Arkin? Please. He had nothing to do at all. One of the most undeserved nominations in years, maybe even ever in that category. Other than that... It was entertaining and I'd recommend it, but I personally think it's better suited as a rental.

7/10

I know its odd to point it out but for during the film I was trying to determine where I'd seen him before and it only came to me later in the film.

There is some sort of a major disconneect between WOKJ and general audiences/critics when it comes tot his film. Today I asked around the professional critics that I usually go to press screenings with about what was their favorite film of last year. Around 80% answered Argo.

My second viewing of Argo was with eight friends. Seven of them loved the film A LOT, the 8th at least thought it was pretty good.

Argo is certay better than Kings Speach and Slumdog. Though granted that's not too hard. I can see why many on KJ were underwhelmed even if I disagree.

This is story a lot of Canadians have heard before but even so it was a solid and well made film.

Best film, maybe not... easily best Director effort...

Post Re: Argo
Ben Affleck's strongest film to-date. A tense, humorous, riveting, intelligent movie with some of the best actors in Hollywood. The climax scene is a nail-biter, and considering how it sounds on paper, they did a great job with very little. I'm sure liberties were taken, but it's a movie after all. Alan Arkin, John Goodman and Bryan Cranston were a lot of fun to watch.

***1/2

Here's the thing: I really don't think it deserves Best Picture now. I do think Affleck should have been given a BD nod. But of the nominated films, I've now seen four, and I'd honestly rank Argo last. Not to take away from it at all, but I just don't think it deserves it more than Lincoln. But Argo is Oscar-bait, start-to-finish, so it's no surprise.

My only complaints with the film are Affleck the Actor and the last five minutes. For a really tight film, it just kind of ends. It didn't need a big ending, but something more satisfying would've been nice. And considering Affleck gave himself the meatier moments and scenes, he's as joyless as a toothache compared to guys like Arkin and Goodman.

Still a great movie. But Best of the Year? I don't think.
