Why do people put such faith in her numbers?

I've never understood it, especially when week-in, week-out she's being criticised for mistakes.

Because they usually do set some sort of expectation for the eventual estimates that come out, which in turn usually set some sort of expectation for the actuals, which in turn provide some sort of expectation for next weekend's estimates, which in turn....

Fucking fantastic for Skyfall. I feel like $35m is likely for the weekend now, and $40m is possible depending on if it can perform like the other Bond films on Thanksgiving.

Does anyone else think Lincoln could be #1 next weekend?

They're lucky they didn't release Red Dawn during one of its initial planned releases. Wouldn't have done as well at all.

So why don't we create threads for other people's predictions? It's the same thing, they're all predicting at the end of the day.

It just seems silly that such importance is put on her numbers. She could just put any old numbers and you lot would all just come running and start creating threads and making assumptions based on them.

She's not predicting. She gets her information from sources that are within the studios. That's why the word "prediction" is not anywhere to be found in her write-ups.

It's Wednesday in the USA and Nikki has the 3-day and 5-day weekend totals. That's a prediction. The 3-day hasn't even begun yet for Christ's sake!

I would love to see Life of Pi reach 100 million. I wonder if it can, if its run is prolonged by the Oscars.

Yeah, I'm dumb. :funny:

The point still stands about the five-day though. The studios can still estimate the five-day based on the Wednesday numbers and then in turn estimate the 3-day weekend (which is the word I somehow overlooked before).

But it's based on a few hours of Wednesday. I'm sorry, but if you put such importance on that, then go ahead, but I'm a little too wise for that. It is possible that hype picks up unexpectably at any time during the 3 or 5-day and therefore their numbers will be off by a lot.

She posted her article at 9:57pm on the west coast, 12:57am on the east coast. How are those numbers just based on a few hours? They only thing they have left to figure are the west coast late night showings which they factor into the estimating.

So wise, yet still bothering to question. Okay.

No one is putting an importance on the numbers. There's an interest because they're the first numbers out there. No one is saying these are going to be one-hundred percent accurate. That's why they're (early) estimates.

It's also possible a national tragedy could occur and everyone could stop going to the movie for the rest of the week. Neither is likely to happen though.

Her articles are posted at those times, but the "estimates" from the studios are not done that late. It takes calculation and signing off, so these numbers are just based on the first half of the day. It's not a quick process done by one guy in an office then forwarded to Nikki within minutes.

Take them with a pinch of salt is all I'm saying.

Anyway, sure they could be off, but it still gives us a pretty good idea.

Which is funny because just on page one of this thread...

Jmart wrote:
That'd be outfuckingstanding for Bond and great for Lincoln.

And considering I've barely seen any advertising for Life of Pi (a couple of commercials off and on, but they'd be easy to miss) that number would be pretty good for it too.

Then again Nikki doesn't seem to know a damn thing about how numbers work, so I'll take this with a grain of salt.

Again, nobody believes these numbers to be gospel. Like Mike said, and I've said, they still give us a pretty good idea as to what the actual numbers will look like.

But a thread is still started for numbers which you will supposedly "take with a grain of salt".

Utterly pointless talking about numbers that are nothing but speculation.

Me too. Which is why I wish people would call a spade a spade.

Labelling an update as such; "weekend numbers", and on a fucking Wednesday, is not my idea of an update. It ludicrous.

The thread title is "(Early) Wednesday Numbers" and there isn't one part of her headline that mentions the word weekend.
