When you get the the 10,000 yen level it doesn't effect the total at all really. But here you go:

32,335,900 / 684,978,000

cinemapia but screendaily also updated today.

The Evangelion 3.0 update tonight is going to take awhile. All the showtimes that were added yesterday (all the ones in BLUE) weren't available to purchase online then, but ALL of them are now available which doubles the amount of showtimes I need to update. Thankfull all of those showtimes were made available for purchase about 4-6 hours ago, so there aren't too many tickets sold for them right now.

And some cinemas have added a second screen (very, very rare) making this a very long process now. :pinch:

Toho Cinemas Important Information to moviegoers this weekend.

Basically saying those who have purchased tickets in advance should come to their selected theater early to exchange their tickets to help avoid the long lines and crowds this weekend.

It looks like the film will be nearing max capacity at this point.

Got a link for cinemapia? I can't find it anywhere.

And Screendaily, they do not update in Japanese Yen, though, right?

cinema.pia. Bunkatsushin also updates weekend numbers, and often reports milestones when certain films cross them, but they're largely member only.

Screendaily does update weekend figures in JPY. Some say they can't access most of the site unless they're a member but I've always been able to.

Hmmm, yeah, I can't even access cinema.pia (nothing comes up at all) and as for Variety, I've never seen JPY figures on there. Might be to do with where we access Internet from.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Evangelion 3.0 Updates
With 20 hours until opening day, here is how the 31 theaters I've tracked all week is shaping up for 'Evangelion 3.0's launch:

Image

Overall Tracking Notes (31/224 theaters):

*# of Sell Outs: 66/213 (31%)
*Total Admissions: 70,262/98,723 (71.2%)
*Est. Opening Day Gross: ¥100-110 million ($1.2-1.4 million)
*Est. Opening Day PSA: ¥3.4 million ($42,000)

Top 5 Theaters For Opening Day:

1. Wald 9: 5,232 tickets sold* (100%) / ¥8.4 million ($105,000)
2. Cincetta: 4,324 tickets sold (90%) / ¥6.8 million ($86,000)
3. Roppongi Hill: 3,693 tickets sold (85%) / ¥6.0 million ($75,000)
4. Burg 13: 3,136 tickets sold (80%) / ¥5.1 million ($63,000)
5. Saitama: 2,816 tickets sold (93%) / ¥4.3 million ($54,000)

*Includes the 1,800 midnight tickets sold.

It's highly likley we're looking at an opening weekend that'll probably top most, if not all, in the past 5 years at least I think. Harry Potter 7.2 and Alice in Wonderland will be very difficult to beat in gross, but admissions is certainly doable even despite playing on 1/3 of their screens. There are about a dozen sell outs on Sunday from just the 31 theaters I'm tracking alone, too.

The only problem it'll have will be people being turned away or ,in what should be very few cases, people wanting to avoid the crowds and waiting until next week.

Before I post the Weekend Forecast, news on the Shinjuku Wald 9 Cinema from last night:

Image

4,101 people attended the overnight screenings of the Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo movie at Tokyo's Shinjuku Wald 9 theater starting at midnight on Saturday. All nine of the theater's screens showed the film a total of 16 times overnight. The Shinjuku Wald 9 movie theater has a total of more than 1,800 seats in the facility. The tickets for the overnight showings had sold out within five minutes of going on sale. (Oricon)

An estimated 300-400 people in line was also seen outside the cinema at 3am, below are a few pictures:

Nov. 17-18
Weekend Forecast

Image

1 (-) Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) ¥1.25 billion ($15.6 million) NEW
2 (1) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) ¥230 million ($2.9 million) Week 3
3 (-) Spirit Helper (Toho) ¥220 million ($2.8 million) NEW
4 (2) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) ¥200 million ($2.5 million) Week 2
5 (3) A Chorus of Angels (TOEI) ¥110 million ($1.4 million) Week 3
6 (4) Smile Pretty Cure! Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥70 million ($875,000) Week 4
7 (5) Cirque Du Soleil: World's Away (Paramount) ¥50 million ($625,000) Week 2
8 (6) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) ¥35 million ($450,000) Week 3
9 (7) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) ¥30 million ($375,000) Week 3
10 (8) Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) ¥20 million ($250,000) Week 3

'Evangelion 3.0' is selling out the majority of it's showtimes that weren't already sold out before today and many locations are seeing several sell outs for Sunday already, too.

Records (openings, totals, etc.) very rarely fall in Japan, and I'm fairly conservative with my predictions but I'm predicting it will easily top 'Umizaru 4' opening weekend of ¥878 million ($11.1 million), currently the biggest opening of 2012.

But not only that, I'm also predicting it opens above ¥1.2 billion which would be the 3rd highest opening ever for a local film (behind 'Howl's Moving Castle' and 'Bayside Shakedown 2'). For a film playing in less than 300 theaters (224), it would easily be #1 among local and foreign films. Also, in USD it would actually be the biggest opening ever for a local film and earn a Top 10 (maybe Top 5) opening all-time.

Full Projections (2-Day):
-Opening Weekend (Gross/Admissions): ¥1.25 billion ($15.6 million) / 800-900,000
-Opening Weekend (Screen Avg.): ¥5.6 million ($69,000) *New Record*
-Final Total (Gross/Admissions): ¥6.5 billion ($81 million) / 4.75 million

Don't be disappointed if it does ¥1/1.1 billion ($13/14 million) or maybe misses that mark with ¥900 million+ ($11/12 million), though. That's still a humongous opening on par with Harry Potter, Pirates, Studio Ghibi, etc. despite playing on half as many screens. I was going to predict ¥1.0 billion even, but I rarely predict on the high end so why not now. It has the sell outs and potential to go above the mark.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Evangelion 3.0 Targets Opening Records
It's actually uncertain which year 'Evangelion 3.0' will be included in right now since bigger mid-November releases usually aren't placed in a year until months after their in release.

The box office year ends Nov. 31st, and I believe any film that grosses more than ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) that was released before that date is counted as a film released in the new year. Notable release that this has occurred with are Harry Potter films, Howl's Moving Castle, 2012 - all mid/late November releases but grossed enough after Nov. 31st to be included into the following year. All December releases are included in the new year. I recall 2012 was counted as a 2010 release for 3/4 months until GMPPAJ (General Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) declared it a 2009 release. (This system makes BOM's Yearly Charts in Japan useless BTW).

If the film stays in 2012, it's very unlikely to reach 'Umizaru: Brave Heart's total, but it if opens as high as ¥1.2 billion ($15 million) it will make a run for #2 film of the year. I'm predicting the high end above in both opening weekend and total because I almost never do and it's possible. A safer prediction would be ¥900 million-¥1 billion ($12 million) opening, ¥5 billion ($60-65 million) total, still big enough for a Top 5 spot in 2012.

Well that's pretty weird. But I follow the 'if it opens in November than it's included in 2012' model. I know I'm radical, but what can you do!

No opening day reports on 'Evangelion 3.0's opening yet, but sometimes estimates are released a few hours from now. The good news is sell outs remained strong all day and into the night. The bad news is that user reviews are mixed (not wanting to spoil myself, I've just read the ending is melancholic or leaving people depressed).

Most theaters have concluded their opening day showtimes (almost midnight in Japan), but a few locations have showings after midnight. Ropponigi Hills sold out every showing it had during the day, and ihas sold out it's 12:30am and 2:30am showings (both on the biggest screen, 644 seats), and added a 4:45am showing just 30 mins ago. Reported lines of 300+ people have been seen outside some theaters in Tokyo today.

Only a handful of theaters, largely in Tokyo, have after-midnight showings like this, but they'll probably delay any estimates for awhile.

Indeed.

¥512 million ($5.4 million) opening weekend on just 120 screens in 38/47 prefectures. That broke the psa record for a wide release (100+ screens) and the film ended up grossing ¥4 billion ($44 million). DVD pre-orders also set a record exceeding 800,000.

'Evangelion 3.0' opened on 224 screens in 47/47 prefectures by comparison.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Evangelion 3.0 Targets Opening Records
Data is limited due to the screen count, but early estimates is suggesting 'Evangelion 3.0' did 350,000-400,000 admissions on opening day at 223 locations. That's about the same or perhaps more than what it's predecessor did opening weekend.

It's really difficult to figure out what the avg. ticket price for the film could be, but here is what that could translate to in gross for opening day:

-If the avg. ticket price = 'Evangelion 2.0' (¥1,446 / $18): Opening Day - ¥505-575 million ($6.3-7.2 million) / ¥2.23-¥2.56 million ($28-32,000) PTA
-If the avg. ticket price = National Avg. (~¥1,300 / $16): Opening Day - ¥450-520 million ($5.6-6.5 million) / ¥2.00-¥2.32 million ($25-29,000) PTA.

In most cases, avg. ticket prices for films released on <300 screens are higher than the national average since most of their locations are in cities. The films also skews towards adults (evident with the second film), so the opening day figure should be closer to the first projection.

An opening weekend (2-day) above ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) will depend on what happens today since both gross projections are high enough for the film to cross the milestone, though the low end of the second projection would prevent it.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Evangelion 3.0 Opening Day Projections
A more accurate estimate came out for opening day admissions: 382,000 (87.7% of One Piece's opening day admissions 3 years ago). Note: The figure is still very much an estimate because it doesn't include nationwide data.

Biggest Opening Days (since 2008)

Gross Yen (USD) / PTA
Harry Potter 7.2 - ¥705 million ($8.8 million) / ¥765,000 ($9,500) PTA
Alice in Wonderland - ¥692 million ($7.5 million) / ¥803,000 ($8,700) PTA
Rookies - ¥673 million ($7.1 million) / ¥1.57 million ($16,500) PTA
Pirates of the Caribbean 4 - ¥598 million ($7.4 million) / ¥748,000 ($9,400) PTA
One Piece Film Strong World - ¥553 million ($6.4 million) / ¥2.91 million ($32,700) PTA
Evangelion 3.0 - ¥549 million ($6.7 million) / ¥2.45 million ($30,600) PTA est.*
Bayside Shakedown 3 - ¥529 million ($6.0 million) / ¥1.18 million ($13,500) PTA
Umizaru 3 - ¥486 million ($5.7 million) / ¥1.04 million ($12,300) PTA
Ponyo - ¥474 million ($4.5 million) / ¥985,000 ($9,300) PTA
Toy Story 3 - ¥457 million ($5.1 million) / ¥855,000 ($9,700) PTA

*When using predecessor's opening avg. ticket price.

Admissions
Rookies - 518,175 (428 screens)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 - 478,177 (922 screens)
Alice in Wonderland - 440,002 (859 screens)
One Piece Film Strong World - 436,133 (190 screens)
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 390,012 (447 screens)
Pirates of the Caribbean 4 - 384,995 (800 screens)
Evangelion 3.0 - 382,000 est. (224 screens)
Ponyo - 372,758 (481 screens)
Toy Story 3 - 305,855 (535 screens)
Umizaru 4 - 301,238 (449 screens)

Technically those aren't the opening days for Harry Potter 7.2, Pirates 4, and Umizaru 4. These three films were released on Friday and had much, much lower opening days than above (not even close to being on the list). But since Saturday is the normal start of the weekend, I included then as their opening day on the lists.

Opening days are rarely reported so we may not get a final figure, plus they don't always determine what a film will end up grossing for the weekend or in total. Just look at Ponyo. It posted one of the weaker opening days, but easily outgrossed and sold more tickets than any of them in the end. And One Piece finished with about half as most of the others.

And I know I have both Umizaru 3 and 4 on the lists, but while the latter had more admissions the former was in 3D and ended up grossing more.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Evangelion 3.0 Opening Day Projections
Usual Locations (Toho)
Ticket Sales for Opening Day (Saturday)

Tickets Sold/Available
Evangelion 3.0 - 53,256/58,298 (91.3%)
Alice in Wonderland - 48,355/75,304 (64.2%)
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 47,424/86,649 (54.7%)
Arrietty - 34,504/73,018 (47.1%)
Bayside Shakedown 4 - 33,407/75,230 (44.4%)
Umizaru 4 - 33,188/64,331 (51.5%)
Toy Story 3 - 32,410/44,891 (72.1%)

That's most likely a new record at Toho theaters, but I can't say for sure without knowing how a few films I don't have data on (Rookies, Harry Potter 7.2, Pirates 4, and One Piece) performed here. Even if it's not a record in terms of tickets sold, that 91.3% percentage has to be.

While 'Evangelion 3.0' handily beat all of them at Toho and Movix locations, those chains are also the films two primary chains. It's being shown at Warner, Cinemax, and other chains too, but not at nearly as many locations as the other films above. This will narrow the gap, though the data here is actual data making it an incredible result so far and a sign the overall opening day projection data I've been posting earlier could be low.

The first one made $18m, the second made $44m, so this has got to make at least $90m, if not more.
