Right now the film will play on every screen they have, totaling 1,800+ seats, at exactly midnight 11/17.
They're the first cinema to announce midnights (incredibly rare in Japan, no film this year has had them) due to opening day being nearly sold out (6/8 showtimes with the 7th going soon), and Sunday is about half-booked (3/8 showtimes with a 4th going any moment), too, with more than a week until release.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Evangelion 3.0 Updates
11/09 (Fri. Morning Update) (Tracking 20/224 Theaters in 15/47 Prefectures)
Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo: Sellout Reports (11/17)
Wald 9 (Shinjuku, Tokyo) - 429 Seats (Screen 9) 08:00 (Sold Out); 10:30 (Sold Out); 13:00 (Sold Out); 15:40 (Sold Out); 18:20 (Sold Out); 21:00 (Sold Out); 23:40 (40 Seats Remaining); 02:20 (220 Seats Remaining) Total Tickets Sold - 3,172/3,432 (92%) *3 Sell Outs On Sunday (08:00, 10:30, 13:00); 1 Showing (15:40) with 19 Seats Remaining; and 1 Showing (18:20) with 46 Seats Remaining. **Midnight Showings on every screen (1,800 seats) announced today (11/7) due to demand (first theater to do midnights this year).
__________________________________ Added: HUMAX Cinemas Ikebukuro (Tokyo). More Key Cinemas like HUMAX (sold out nearly 1/3 of it's seats in a few hours) added online ticketing today so I'll be adding several more locations over the weekend.
Seat Availability goes: Plenty Seats Remaining -> Half Full -> Few Seats Remaining > # Seats Remaining -> Sold Out.
Total Tickets Sold So Far for Opening Day (20/224 Theaters) - 29,614/40,536 (73%). 8 More Days til Launch.
A rough calculation gives 'Evangelion 3.0' approx. 40-45 million yen ($500-550,000) from these 20 theaters alone already.
By comparison, 'Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo's predecessor, 'Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance', currently holds the highest sell-out rate (58%) on Opening Weekend for a film playing on over 100 screens.

Re: Japan Box Office: Evangelion 3.0 Updates (73% Sell-out R
Hideaki Anno and Studio Ghibli teamed up to produce a live-action short titled "Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo" but the short has since not had a known release. Until now.
The short (trailer below) will debut with 'Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo".
The short is heavily inspired by Ghibli's 'Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind", which Hideaki Anno was a key animator before directing the Evangelion series.
'Evangelion 3.0' is going to be huge enough, the buzz and hype is higher than any release in recent years, but this collaboration is only going escalate it.

Re: Japan Box Office: Evangelion 3.0 Updates (73% Sell-out R
11/10-11 Weekend Forecast
1 (-) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) ¥420 million ($5.3 million) NEW 2 (1) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) ¥280 million ($3.6 million) Week 2 3 (2) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) ¥130 million ($1.7 million) Week 2 4 (-) Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (Paramount) ¥120 million ($1.6 million) NEW 5 (3) Smile Pretty Cure! Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥100 million ($1.3 million) Week 3 6 (4) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) ¥70 million ($900,000) Week 2 7 (5) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) ¥60 million ($750,000) Week 2 8 (8) Connection (Toho) ¥40 million ($500,000) Week 6 9 (6) Paranormal Activity 2 (Paramount) ¥35 million ($450,000) Week 2 10 (7) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) ¥35 million ($450,000) Week 4
'Holy Scripture of Evil', starring Hideaki Ito (Umizaru franchise), is Toho's biggest release this Nov/Dec and the goal will be a ¥3 billion ($40 million) total. The film has a R15+ rating, uncommon in the market, and is likely to be the biggest R15+ film of the year.
Toho is also co-distributing 'The Floating Castle' which looks to have a similar total around ¥3 billion ($40 million).
'Cirque du Soleil' is opening early on Friday which will deflate it's opening weekend a bit, and I think it'll struggle to rank in the Top 5 in admissions. However, the 3D share should be quite high for this one to secure a Top 5 debut regardless of admissions.

TE2 finishing inside the Top Ten this weekend? I hope so. But I think not. The Japanese don't seem to be liking TE2 that much.

Re: Japan Box Office: Wkd. Forecast / Cont. Evangelion Updat
I made a small error reporting Wald 9's midnights (all 9 screens for 1,800+ tickets worth) being sold out after 3 days of being announced. They were announced 3 days ago, but went on sale today and sold out in literally minutes setting what appears to be a record.
This guy says he tried to get a midnight ticket as soon as they went on sale but was too late with them being gone in 2(!) minutes. So he had to settle for 2:50AM (nearing sell out) and 5:20AM (showtime just added) tickets.
The Wald 9 is nearly booked for the entire weekend with 7 days to go. I very much doubt the few remaining seats (almost exclusively Sunday night now) will be available in one or two days tops. And when it does sell out the entire weekend, that's at least 8,700 tickets sold from that theater alone resulting in about 13 million yen ($165,000) opening weekend (Sat. and Sun.).

Re: Japan Box Office: Wkd. Forecast / Cont. Evangelion Updat
In response to the next weekends sellouts in Shinjuku and soon to be other locations (some tickets to Movix locations are listed, too), people have decided to auction off their tickets they were lucky enough to purchase for opening weekend:
-Most pairs (2 tickets) are going for 3,600-3,800 ($45-48). About a 30% increase over regular paired prices.
-Most single tickets for opening day are around 2,000-2,200 ($25-28), just a little higher than a general admission. Though some are higher with one single ticket for opening day at 2,500 ($32) now. 40% over the general admission fee. Currently 2 bids on that one.
-Midnight tickets at the Wald 9 are going for the most, ranging from 5,000-7,000 ($63-88). That's a whopping 300-400% increase over the general admission fee, and one of them has the most bids (17) listed right now.
People clearly aren't wanting to wait until Monday or later to see this film.
The prices at the Wald 9: General Admissions - 1,800 ($23), High School/College Student - 1,500 ($19), Seniors (60+) - 1,000 ($13). And also they have a special here if you come in pairs your companion ticket is 1,000 ($13).

Re: Japan Box Office: Wkd. Forecast / Cont. Evangelion Updat
I will forever wonder if a significant reason these film versions of the storyline do so well is actually a result of how badly done the ending of the TV show was (both in terms of how badly the last two episodes were received, as well as how bad they actually were). I hope these films get it right this time.
(I don't have a specific "right" in mind, other than something that actually both makes sense and uses the setup).

Re: Japan Box Office: Wkd. Forecast / Cont. Evangelion Updat
11/10-11 Weekend Estimates
1 (1) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) ¥296 million ($3.7 million), -27%, Week 2 2 (-) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) ¥270 million ($3.4 million) NEW 3 (2) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) ¥151 million ($1.9 million), -16%, Week 2 4 (3) Smile Pretty Cure! Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥102 million ($1.3 million), -29%, Week 3 5 (-) Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (Paramount) ¥67 million ($850,000) NEW 6 (4) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) ¥56 million ($705,000), -44%, Week 2 7 (5) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) ¥55 million ($695,000), -45%, Week 2 8 (6) Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) ¥40 million ($500,000), -35%, Week 2 9 (9) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥29 million ($365,000), -33%, Week 10 10 (8) Connection (Toho) ¥28 million ($350,000), -46%, Week 6 11 (7) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) ¥28 million ($350,000), -52%, Week 4 12 (10) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) ¥20 million ($250,000), -50%, Week 6
Great second weekend for 'The Floating Castle'. Even though estimates can be off some weeks, I think it's safe to call a second weekend on top. ¥3 billion (about $40 million) becomes more likely.
So-so for 'Holy Scripture'. Toho was certainly wanting more, but this is still I believe the best opening for a R15+ film this year edging out 'Outrage 2: Beyond'. ¥2 billion ($25 million) becomes the target goal now.
Meh debut for 'Cirque du Soleil'. Admissions won't be pretty considering the 3D share should be high for this film.
The films at the bottom of the Top 10 are estimated to have grossed practically the same and we won't know the actual ranking there until tomorrow at the earliest. It would be spectacular if 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' manages a 10th weekend in the Top 10, though.

Anyway, meh for TE2.

11/10-11 Weekend Ranking
1 (1) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) Week 2 2 (-) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) NEW 3 (2) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) Week 2 4 (3) Smile Pretty Cure! Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) Week 3 5 (-) Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (Paramount) NEW 6 (4) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) Week 2 7 (5) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) Week 2 8 (6) Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) Week 2 9 (7) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) Week 4 10 (8) Connection (Toho) Week 6
'The Floating Castle' topped ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) after 10 days in release.
'Holy Scripture of Evil' debuted on 309 screens to 215,059 admissions for a weekend gross of ¥298,945,000 ($3.8 million). A solid increase over estimates, and the best opening for a R15+ film this year. ¥2 billion ($25 million) should be achievable with this opening figure.
'Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away' grossed ¥87,974,700 ($1.1 million) on 53,432 admissions during the weekend on 240 screens. Also a solid increase over estimates (I expect all the estimates to be low now), and the film had the highest avg. ticket price of any wide release this year on opening weekend with ¥1,647 ($21). Since opening on Friday, the film has earned ¥110,514,200 ($1.4 million) with 67,687 admissions.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' and 'Resident Evil: Retribution' are nearing the end of their runs and each is so close to reaching ¥6 billion ($76 million) and ¥4 billion ($51 million), respectively. Tracking will probably end before (if) they reach those targets but I'd say it's 50/50 for 'Bayside' and 25/75 for 'Resident Evil'.
'Connection' has had by far the best performance by an October release this year.
'The Floating Castle' exceeded ¥1 billion after just 10 days. It'll be aiming for ¥3 billion and a Top 15 spot for the year.

Toho Cinemas Important Information to moviegoers this weekend.
Basically saying those who have purchased tickets in advance should come to their selected theater early to exchange their tickets to help avoid the long lines and crowds this weekend.
It looks like the film will be nearing max capacity at this point.

Re: Japan Box Office: Wkd. Ranking / Cont. Evangelion Update
If it were to open today with these figures, it would have an opening day (from just 32 of it's 224 theaters) over ¥70 million ($900,000) for a PSA of ¥2.2 million+ ($28,000+). Sunday will remain about even (already many sell outs or near sell outs then too) so a PSA over ¥4 million ($50,000) looks quite possible opening weekend. That would give it the second highest PSA ever for a wide release and possibly be enough for a ¥1 billion+ opening weekend.
A rough calculation assuming the average screen is about 400 seats will require 'Evangelion 3.0' to sell out appox. 70% of it's seats for the weekend to break ¥1 billion (biggest opening weekend of the year, and other records I won't list here would fall). And currently, it's at 77.9% on Saturday at the 32 theaters I'm tracking and that's been rising each day and will probably exceed 80% tomorrow.
