Just like 50m OD seemed impossible back in 2002. ;)

It seems pretty simple: If SW7 is released on a Friday, it will deliver a new opening weekend record, if SW7 is released on another day, it will deliver a new opening week record...

$200m OW minimum is too big of a stretch IMO.

It will be frontloaded for $170m and I would say $150m OW is minimum but you cannot put a number this big and this close to OW record and say it a minimum.

Did someone steal your toy Magnus? Why so serious?

Stop with those insane predictions, I have already given you my reasons why inflation numbers are not the only reason this will do big numbers. It has to look very good to be doing great numbers. And do remember till 2013 (cause we are already at the end of 2012) $150m OW stays as one of the biggest OW's unadjusted.

ROTS was a huge opener and in terms of ticket sold one of the biggest in terms of 4-day and 5-day openings.
Adjusted it made around 216 million in 5-days...

SW1: Biggest opening weekend of all-time (1978 re-release)
SW2: Biggest opening week of all-time (going wide after 4 weeks of limited release)
SW3: Biggest opening weekend and opening week of all-time
SW4: Biggest opening week of all-time
SW5: 2nd biggest opening week of all-time (missed SPIDER-MAN by 11 %)
SW6: 2nd biggest opening week of all-time (missed SPIDER-MAN 2 by 0.4 %)

And equally impressive SW1-SE had the 11th biggest opening weekend of all-time despite being released in January...

Still doesn't make $200m OW a lock.

If they manage to bring back Luke, Han and Leia i wouldn't bet against $200m, otherwise it'll be a tough act to follow Avengers, even for Star Wars. It definitely has a chance, though.

Definitely if they manage to bring in the old cast then there is chance but all depends on how the movie looks and what they are offering. Declaring $200m OW lock at just the announcement is setting the expectations too high.

If its 3D then the chances go up by a lot.

No doubt TDKR showed 200 million opening for a 2d film is not happening.

I mean, inflation definitely won't help!

TDKR had 0 chance at a 200 million weekend. This has a decent shot, especially with 3 years of inflation, and great marketing. I'd say 190-230 at the moment seems like a reasonable range for a 3 day number. Another opening day is an entirely different story though.

Post Re: Star Wars - Episode VII - Predictions
Here is a bit of a graph using my opening weekend adjuster, based on an average of most big blockbusters opening in 4500 theaters in 2015, and on ticket prices costing on average $8.50 at that time at the current increases.

Revenge of the Sith- 177 million (I calculate it's Thurs at 81.5 million)
Attack of the Clones- 168 million (I calculate it's Thurs at 62.7 million
Phantom Menace- 165 million (I calculate it's Wed at 72.3, Thus 31.4)

Add 3D prices and a Friday opening, all 3 would make 200 million.

Yes because after 10-15 years of releases every person that saw the previous movies will come back to see this over OW. This logic is flawed.

$170m OW is still a good retention IMO.

With Ford interested I think they will be able to get the original three back, and if that happens i expect a guaranteed new opening wknd record well over 200m (it will have 3D fo sho), and our first highest grossing film of all time that is a sequel.

Personally I don't think they will be able to release it in 2015. I think they just said that to build hype. I don't think we'll see another SW before 2016 at the earliest.

Yeah good chance it will get delayed but if they can make 2015 they may as well. There still is enough time and anticipation build-up.

Why would it be so hard to make that date? A May 2015 release means it has to be shooting early in 2014. They have over a year to get things ready.

I think its on track to. The only reason to delay would be purely for release date purposes. Though I still think July 2015 is perfect for it.

Hamill? I'm pretty sure he has said many times before that he'd return. No wonder with the way his "career" is going.
