1,800 is a lot for something that looks terrible.

Not Simon West. He's lost what ever made him good in the 90s.

Nothing has changed this rule: 20 % of movie theaters earn 80 % of the box office. That's why a movie like BORAT can do $26.5m in 837 theaters.
Far more important is how many screens FLIGHT is gonna get in those 1,800 theaters. If it's just 1 screen than there's trouble, if it's 2 screens it's okay and if it's 3 screens it's great... I feel vindicated...

Even though it's doing very, very well, it's still hard not to quietly imagine how ENORMOUS its opening would have been in 2,800+ theatres.

$10M/$28M most likely. Going low on the theater count was foolish. Like with Atlas, if you're going to shell out the big bucks for an A-lister why suddenly get cute with the theater count? Makes no sense. Next year - Bad Boys 3 in 1700 theaters. To build oscar buzz.

Most Denzel movies open in the $20m-$24m range - just like this one...

Re: Wait wtf?! Flight only in 1,800 theaters next week?!?!?!
I think I have to explain what corner I'm coming from...
Of course FLIGHT would have done more in more theaters...
But everyone was looking at the theater count and saw doom & gloom and even BoxOffice ($18.5m) and MTC ($18m) saw a sub-$20m opening even though 9 out of Denzel's last 10 movies opened above the $20m mark.
All I was saying is that FLIGHT's theater count was big enough to achieve a "regular" opening as it definitely covers the most important theaters in the country... That's why I predicted $20m on my website and still fell short...

Re: Wait wtf?! Flight only in 1,800 theaters next week?!?!?!
If they wanted Oscar buzz, then releasing it in 3,000 theaters and opening to $35m would have limited its Oscar appeal. The Academy like their Oscar winners to be limited and not blockbusters. It's clear to me what Paramount's strategy was/is, so why anybody else can't see it is beyond me.

Re: Wait wtf?! Flight only in 1,800 theaters next week?!?!?!
I agree with Algren this move could actually help the movie stay afloat longer and have it distributed to different audience during Awards season.
Yes it could have opened bigger if it was in more theaters but it would have died down sooner with that IMO. This way there is a chance to keep as many theater for a longer run and it might actually help its gross in the long run. We still have to wait and watch its legs before we conclude on anything.
