Taken 2 (INTL)
The first wasn't a major hit overseas, taking in "only" $81.8 million internationally.
Taken 2 made $55 million internationally this weekend and currently stands at $67,000,000.
It still has Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Japan and some smaller markets ahead. From these four alone the first made around $11 million, though it will definitely increase as it did everywhere else.
Right now anything below $170-200 million overseas would shock me. Looking at a $300+ million worldwide total for a $45 million movie here.
Looks like Liam Neeson will be kicking ass as Bryan Mills until he's 70...

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
Some openings are more than impressive:
France: 6th biggest opening of the year GB: 6th biggest opening of the year Australia: 5th biggest opening of the year
And even in countries with bad openigs, for example Turkey, the opening is still 5 times bigger than the original's...

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
Here in Oz it did the equivalent of an $80m OW in North America. Huge. Good 30% hold for Looper too.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
The original was loved by audience but they only discovered it over Home Media so this was definitely going to be huge. One thing I noticed was how many girls were also very interested in seeing Taken 2 in theaters here which is a key demo I guess.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
It made another $41 million over the weekend for a $132.8 million total.
The film's increase over the predecessor is HUGE overseas. It still has the Netherlands and Japan ahead... Looks like a $350+ million worldwide total might be possible.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
Taken 1 was widely watched on the internet and on Home Video in 2009.
I remember all of us watching the film on a computer and just loving the Bad ass Liam Nesson.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
Depending on how big it is in Japan it could get to $350m WW total though it is early to tell. It is crossing $300m WW total for sure but $350m WW depends on the holds in upcoming weekends. If it does as good as it is doing in domestic market then $350m should happen.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
The first movie also had the whole strange dynamic where Europe just seemed to regard it as another solidly middle-of-the-road Luc Besson action production, then we Americans lost our collective shit and turned it into a phenomenon when it came out here months later.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
^ Absolutely the original was not as big in Europe. But I highly doubt Taken 2's success is because of the money it made in US.
The original is just so watchable the WOM was so good over an okish script that can please females as well (which I believe is a key factor in its success). The home media watches/sales of the original is the reason I think Taken 2 is THIS big everywhere. The same will not be the case for Taken 3 I guess though if it is better than Taken 2 you never know....

Yes...and I simply don't understand it. I mean I like the first Taken just as anyone else, but it is not even the best of those Besson Euro-action productions. Why the US decided to embrace this one more than any of the rest...I dunno.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
So holdovers can generate a minimum of $30m-$35m and then there is Japan and some small markets ahead. For another expected $25m-$30m. Add another $30m from domestic gross and it could reach as high as $375m WW would be amazing for it.

Re: Taken 2 (INTL)
Obviously Skyfall will kill it everywhere. But $350 million is still a lock worldwide.

Who would have thought that two French movies would combine to $750m WW within a year?

It made $4m this weekend with $217m. Will be almost three times the original made in its OS run. Very impressive.
